I posted this on the ID thread but haven't gotten a positive answer, but I am 99% sure this is a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. It's my first hawk picture. :-) My birds had suddenly all vanished and I saw this mysterious bird flying in the branches overhead. Thought it was a crow at first. Then it landed on my deck. I was so excited that my pictures didn't come out so great. Not sure they would have anyway because of the angle of the sun. But he also didn't stay very long either.

Last one, not a good picture, but it shows his size a little better

creekwalker, based on its size, I think it is a Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Benton County, MO(Zone 5a)

I searched into it though and ruled out the Sharp Shinned hawk. I am thinking they have feathers down their legs?(Nope. Wrong on that) Might be wrong. But all the pictures looked like a Coopers hawk to me. This one is just immature, due to his eyes being yellow. You could be right though. I don't know?

I read that SS hawks are Jay or Dove sized and Coopers are compared to a crow. This one was at least crow sized or larger. He has a white lower belly.

Where is everyone? I have to go to work now, so I won't get to see your replies. :-(

Have a good evening all!

Sorry CW that size would definitely be Coopers.

I wasn't too sure from your pic as the faraway shot made him look more like a Sharpie.

Hi Linth, Yes their w/ the new lens.

Mrs_ Ed: Redpolls prefers Nyger seed, I did try the mix and they would eat the nyger, but all the sunflower chips were thrown to the ground for other birds.

great shot s everyone.

Okay - you people with the good cameras (Pelle) are really starting to annoy me - and yet I love the pictures so much... I've said it before - I'm so glad this isn't a contest!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Pelle must say that those shots of Red-bellied Woodpecker are awesome.

Got a great surprise this afternoon, had a great big flock of Bohemian waxwing. Was so excited, my heart was racing, as I was hurrying to get a series of shots, before they all flew away. I have 2 Crabapples trees in the front yard, and they were all bunched in there, for the crabapples. They didn't stay very long, hopefully they will be back soon. What a sight.

Rose do you have fruit trees nearby? In the Fall, I see them at my neighbor's place and here. Their visits are always brief. My Neighbor has a Mountain Ash, and it's always full of red berries, very enticing to them. I'm not sure if they're the Cedar or the Bohemian I've seen last fall. I've only known the difference since I've been on this Forum.
