Can I plant a Geranium in a vase with water only or do they need to planted in soil?

If you're talking about zonal geraniums (Pelargonium), when you google "hydroponic Geranium" you find that it can be grown in water. There's tons of information out there it's just a matter of sorting through it all. I didn't really find anything about growing true Geraniums in water...
