I bought a pachira aquatica/plaited plant / money tree 2 years ago and it was growing well. since last year it started having lot of growth at the base of the plant and the leaves on the top started falling off. i water and mist it regularly and it was repotted last spring. Now i have only 3 leaves left on the top of the plant with lots of growth and new shoots appearing at the base of the plant. also out of 5 stems that were plaited 3 have dried out almost to the base. The plant is placed on a gravel tray. I dont know what's happening and can't find any information on the net..please help !!!
PACHIRA AQUATICA HELP !!
Can you post a picture? That could help in figuring out what's going on.
One possibility that I can think of is that while braided trunks are pretty and decorative, they're really not very good for the plant as it grows. The trunks continue to get wider and dig into each other, and eventually it'll get to the point where basically the plant's circulation gets cut off and water and nutrients can't travel efficiently up the trunks to the leaves. It's possible that your plant sensed this was starting to happen, and in order to survive, it decided to put its energy into sending up new shoots from the base instead.
Assuming all the new shoots from the bottom are looking totally happy and healthy, I think this is a good possibility. However, if you are also losing some leaves off the new growth along with the older leaves from the braided trunks, then I suspect a watering issue or something along those lines instead of (or in addition to) the above problem.
