Day Lily outside in a pot zone 8a

Valsolda, Italy(Zone 9b)

Hello,

I have a Day Lily that is outside in a pot. I have notice that it has gone all brown. It only has one green leaf left. The ones in garden went dormant in the end of November. Will it be alright in spring?

They go dormant for the winter and they're hardy to zones much colder than yours, so I would imagine it'll be fine unless the soil in the pot spent a lot of time being waterlogged and caused the roots to rot or something.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Remove the tuber from the pot and look to make sure there is no rot or insect feeding on the growing tuber, knock away the soil and re-pot the tuber into fresh new moist compost if it looks OK, if some bits are damaged, cut this part off till you have cut into good firm tuber, then pot it up. give it a feed as it has been in a pot and probable depleted any nutrients it had in the potting compost, make sure you water as required, they dont like too much water, but not too dry either, Good luck. Hello,

I watered it 3 times for the whole winter. I was hoping it would go dormant.

Hi sasha10,
I had to winter some day lilies over in pots when we first moved into our new house (couldn't make my flowerbeds yet). Like yours, they slowly went dormant but the still popped back out in the spring. I think they took a little longer to go dormant because they were on my front porch (southern exposure) and were not only in a warmer situation but were sheltered from the north winds. With no more water than you gave them, I think they will probably be fine.

Hello!

I also have them in a sheltered place. They only get the morning sun. Will that be enough for some good flowers in the summer? The temperatures in the summer are between 35C and 45C. Lots of northern european plants suffer here in summer.

Hello!

My Day Lily has come back now the temps are around 25C. It is growing really quickly. The same for my pansies.

How wonderful--it's exciting to watch the flowers start to wake up in the spring, isn't it? Mine have all popped up now too (they're all in the flowerbeds now). They're several inches high and sure are a welcome sight. I can't wait for them to bloom. At least for now I have daffodils, yarrow, a tulip tree and several flowering shrubs that are a sight for sore eyes this time of year.

Hello!

I also like watching the flowers wake up. Lots of walnut trees are now in bloom. My primroses are really beautiful. My tulips just disappeared. They came up in Febuary but then they just rotted and I couldn't find the bulbs.

sasha10,
How sad to lose your tulips, especially to rot :-( Guess losing some of our beloved flowers is part of the love of growing things. At least you have other flowers you can enjoy.

Hello!

My daffodils are now budding. Not much color on the trees because of last years droughts and fires. Lots of trees died from the heat (and so did my petunias and other daylilies)
