DAILY PICS VOL 65

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone...we are continuing from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/811922/

I am back among the living and pleased to share this pic of an Eastern Meadowlark in our field yesterday. This is one of 3 and was high in the tree...not too good but the yellow sure does pop!

Thanks Nanny and Pelle!

Yes Nanny, please repost your beautiful Hummers here...they make me feed warmer and I wouldn't want them to get lost!

Okay!

This is Ed our male Hummer we had last summer. We called him Ed because when he perched, his shoulders appeared hunched up like Ed Sullivan. (dating my self here, LOL)

Yesterday at a pond near Canyonville I encountered a flock of what I believe to be Bushtits. I'd only seen them once before, and was able to get a photo of an Interior female. Yesterday I got shots of at least two males that appear to be Coastal and Interior.

Someone with more knowledge please step in here. Does one generally find the Coastal and Interior in the same flock?

Sorry the pix aren't sharper. These lil' birds are very fast and seldom sit still!

Presumed Coastal Bushtit male.

oooohh rose, what a pretty bird that Meadowlark is! Never seen one but sure hope to. Gorgeous yellow.
LOL Nanny, I remember Ed's hunched shoulders and in my book you ain't old till they have to carbon date you! It has been 65 degrees here the last 3 days .. makes me want to put my hummingbird feeders out but it is too soon.
tigerlily, I've only got one picture of a bushtit, mine was much smaller looking than your bird but I don't know anything about the coastal variety. There was a small flock in a pine tree and to say "These lil' birds are very fast and seldom sit still!" is very accurate. Like I said I only got one photo!

I've got 5 photos of a roadrunner I am acquainted with that I'd like to share.
In this picture I don't think he recognized me without my coat on and he's trying to slink away

I called out to him and he stopped in his tracks and ran right towards me

And the presumed Interior Bushtit male.

so sorry tigerlily I thought you were done!!!

Marlton, NJ

LOL angele!!! So cute!

Tiger those are outstanding photos! As you've probably already have read the coastal Bushtits are light grey w/ a gray-brown cap.

The Interior are dark w/ brownish cheek.

I won't trust my eyes,I'll leave this for Resin.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

"Although similar in all other respects, Interior and Pacific populations [of Bushtit] differ consistently in plumage; intermediates occur where ranges meet" – Sibley, North American Bird Guide.

Presumably yours are in the area where the two meet.

This weekend the weather was like Springtime; but a bunch of bees showed up and took over my feeders. The birds didn't want to come anywhere near them. DH jokingly told me ... "They fly and eat your bird seed; so just think of them as tiny little birds." I told him ... "No, I'll wait another month or two and my hummers should be back by then."

Rose ... Thanks for starting this new thread. I especially enjoyed seeing your Eastern Meadowlark. I occasionally see some Western Meadowlarks down by the river; but they don't have nearly as much yellow as yours.

Here's a pic of a Western Meadowlark that I took a few weeks ago.

Found a peanut! Actually, found a whole little bowl of peanuts and I'm going to eat them ALL. This little Cactus Wren loves his/her peanuts and won't share them with anybody else.

DH and I went birding at the lake yesterday. Here's a Mallard hybrid trying to attract lady friend.

It's a good thing this fat mallard hybrid live at the lake, where he's protected. Otherwise, he'd be on someone's dinner table for sure.

I have a question for you more experienced birder's. I bought one of those balls of nesting material at WBU. Should I hang it somewhere near the feeders so they see it or in a different area??

On Ed Sullivan, I remember when the Beatles were making their first appearence and BEGGING my mom to let me eat dinner in the front room!! That was something that was not allowed in our house at that time.

I got this WOW shot today!

Nice pic Rose. and thanks for starting new Vol. Nice to hear your feeling better.
ED Sullivan, Beatles..........hmmm brings back memories. LOL

Hairy woodpecker. Downy was here this morning, but didn't have time to a pic.

I've never bought one of those nanny but I hang the short cat fur in the trees I see them frequent the most. They have used it.

Beautiful catch!

Very nice pic burn!

Wow is right Nanny...that is a great shot!! And yes Nanny and Pelle...I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan....again like it was only yesterday...sigh...where did the decades go?!! LOL!

Angele, I remember seeing roadrunners when I went to the desert in So Cal...more great memories! Your little guy reminds me of the Mockingbird that has adopted us...he begs for meal worms and gets them!!

Tiger, your Bushtit is beautiful...I would love to see one!

Gary...you really took those great shots thru a window?!!!

Jane, I love seeing your pics! I think the reason my Meadowlark looks so yellow is the sun was shining directly on it and the wind was blowing his feathers!

Rose

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Burn! Nice pics...I would love to see a Pine Grosbeak!

Here is a Purple Finch I found while walking the dogs this AM.

While I was down with the flu a Pileated landed in the walnut tree outside my kitchen window. Wish the pic was better but it sure was nice having him so close!

They sure sit low in the water.

Wow,wonderful pics guys!

Very nice shot of the Purple Finch dellrose and congrats on the Pileated coming so close.

Tiger,Their conversation looks to be quite funny. Nice to see such good shots of them.

Pelle

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

Pelle, I've tried for probably a year to get even passable shots of the darned cormorants, LOL! Now if the hoodies, redheads and other water fowl would just come close enough if good lighting.

Thumbnail by tigerlily
The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Tiger...great pics and those Cormorants definately need a caption! It is way too cute!

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

And this kingfisher too! I know it hangs out there, but it sees me first, squawks and takes off. At least I could still see it after it landed again this time.

I thought this was a female Hooded Merganser, but if it is it's sure way different than in my books.
