What soil do you'll use.
I am trying to start a graden and need soil.
First i was going fot horse and cow manure but my mom decided not too.
If you could please help.
THank you very much
Soil.
14 have you gone to the soil and composting forum
they talk all about dirt ! :) and give great help and ideas .
I guess you first have to consider what soil you have in your area
clay
loam
sand ?
i m not familiar with FL ?
or are you talking about starting seedling and what medium to use. ?
with manure you let it age first before using it .
hope it helps
sue
Thank you very much Sue.
In florida we have pure sand.
I talked to my Mom and she said that if she uses manure she wants cow.
But then I said just to go to the store and buy soil.
I am still not sure what i am doing.
But thank you very much for your advise.

Hey sue,
I was looking for the soil and manure fourm.
Maybe i just did not see it.
Well you have been a big help. Once again thank you.
Allie14
For a lot of the forums here, you have to be a subscriber.
If kale is all you want to grow, you might consider something like an Earthbox, that is filled with a potting mix, not real soil.
go here and you will get alot of help :)

Well guys the only thing is that i want to grow alot of diffrent things.
But thanks for your advise.
Allie14
Well the only problem is you have to be a paid subscriber in order to read the other peoples replys.
But thank you for sending that to me.

Sue,
we are doing it in the backyard and it is about 6 feet by 5feet.
And i am planning on planting cucs, peppers, green beans, lettuce, sqaush's, and I am not sure what else right know.
with such a small area i don't know if squash is going to be good idea. They take up alot of room even if its just 1 plant.
cucs too. unless you trellis them
lettuce is good idea for an area like that
but to be honest since it is so small i would do
lettuce, radish's, green beans ,carrots or onion. if you do something big it will cover the small stuff and not give them any sun.
i bet you could train the squash to go on the outside and off to the side ? just plant it on the end.
you would need to do a raised bed and add lots of topsoil and some compost . mix it in and keep good drainage.
hope it helps
let me know if i can help some more
sue
Hey sue,
It is a raised bed I built it with wood.
Well I will tell you maybe tomarrow if any other veggie pops up in my mind.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALLLLLLLLLLLL YOUR HELP.
IT HAS HELPED ME TONSSSSSSSSSSS.
Allie14
Oh I will.
DO you have any animals?
I love dogs and horses.
Hey Sue,
We do not have any animals.
Are you going to have farm animals on the farm?
I think it would be fun to have a farm but it is tonsss of work.
You have to go out everyday and do chores.
What do you think about chicken manure?
Cause we were in the store yesterday looking for soil and found out about it.
Have a great day.
Allie14
What did you find out about it ?
it is considered a " hot " manure and is high in nitrogen. you need a balance for your fertilizer.
honestly with your area i would buy a bag . Of Miracle grow . Most manures have to age at least a yr to use it. Some come in bags and is called compost. which is a better alternative then using straight manure. Easier too.
Are you starting seeds inside then transplant them outside or are you wanting to plant them straight in the ground ?
your local library would have many books on seeds starting and gardening
do you like to read
i love to read
sue
In a garden that size, grow upwards. Cucumbers and some summer squash can be trellised to save space. Pole beans give a greater yield for the space than bush beans. All the crops you mention are hot-weather crops, except for lettuce. Planting your lettuce on the north end of your garden will give it shade from all the crops on the trellises, keep it cooler. Also the kale, if you decide to try it.

Hey Sue,
Yes I love to read.
Oh I am not sure what we are doing about the seeds.
I remember in the store reading on the bag of soil compost.
That is what I told mom to get Miracal Grow.
Thanks for all your help.
I really needed it.
Allie14
Do you come on alot?
Is it cold up there?
Hey Sue,
Ok I will tell you how the garden goes.
-10 is freezing to us.
Have a great day.
Hey Sue,
How was your weekend?
I am working more and more on my garde.
Thanks a ton for all your help.
Allie14
Great.
Well we are adding compost to the soil, what do you think of that?
Hey Sue,
I am just writing to tell you that I got a email saying I am no longer allowed to write here.
Because I am UNDER 13.
Once again thank you for all your help.
God Bless.
Allie
