Bougianvilla question

Cordele, GA

I would like to try my hand at a bonsai bougainvilla. How quickly do they grow and what is the min. winter temp for survival?

Here where I am in 9b, they'll almost always survive the winter when they're planted in the ground, but occasionally I do lose one, so even for ones in the ground I probably wouldn't trust them if you're colder than zone 9a/b. And if they're in a pot, especially one of those shallow bonsai sort of pots that doesn't have a lot of soil, I wouldn't leave it outdoors for the winter unless I were in zone 10 or 11. As far as how quickly they grow--it depends on which one you have. There are some cultivars that are really vigorous and get huge, and then on the opposite extreme there are some newer dwarf cultivars that don't get very big. And of course there are plenty in between.

Can you suggest where I might find information on various cultivars and possible sources for mail order?

You can look in Plant Files and see what height it says each one gets to (some might not have this info, but hopefully most will). The ones that are naturally smaller would probably be easier to do as bonsai. You should be able to find them locally with no problem if you wait until spring/summer, they should be all over the place and it should say on the plant tag how big it'll get (even when I lived in Ohio, I could find them in local nurseries so I'm sure you'd have no trouble). As far as mail order, the only place I remember seeing them is Logees.
