I put the wrong picture of the bed with the stump. Here's the right one
wrong picture of stump
I've gotta tell you, you have some very unfriendly looking soil. I would not plant anything directly into that. It looks very hard packed. Is it clay? I would make raised beds using good soil with some organic matter added before planting anything... First things first. Soil and drainage.
The soil there really is pretty good. It's mostly compost. There's a lot of leaves and stuff there and maybe it's the picture color or something.
Anything that I've planted in that area grows really well. We had taken off the porch and redid it and it ended up smaller. That's why I'm having to figure out what to plant there. At one time the porch came to where those lily's are growing. It wasn'[t good soil when I started but I spent lots of time in the woods behind and beside the yard raking up good black composted soil.
We've been here since '91, so I know all those leaves and stuff that have been in the woods all that time have never been messed with. It's probably 50 years of composted leaves and stuff.
