I had European Goldfinches as pets but they were terrible pets and were really mean to each other. They belong in the wild. I think they are so beautiful!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I was driving home just now and saw a big bird in a tree so I ran home for my camera and luckily he was still there.

It was dusk and quite foggy, so I didn't expect much. I have seen Barred owls in this spot before, so I often look.

Looks like almost everybody has snow. I love photos of birds in the snow. We usually get a few snowstorms every year but none so far this winter. Wallaby, your Goldfinch are so different than ours here. That red face is really something!
Susan, those photos are wonderful. What is the bird block?
Bev, I haven't a clue about your Cardinal! Maybe it is getting new feathers???
Boojum.. great owl!!! (edited to add I love the fog!)
Here is a photo of Pete the Pyrrhuloxia - Cardinalis sinuatus, his feathers are blowing in a cold wind we are having today.

There's something innocent and baby-like about them, no?

Boojum, I think the look sweet & cuddly but I'm not gonna try that if I ever see one.. probably scratch my eyes out if I tried to cuddle it, no? lol

Nature red in tooth and claw (well beak and claw in this case).

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Pell, I don't think so because the knot of feathers that are on the left side stick out like she has a tumer, I have seen a bald headed male befor and his shin under is black. This color is royal blue!! BEV

Quoting:
Here is one pics of the female cardinal with blue on her chest

Looks like it has lost some feathers, and the 'blue' is the bases of the next feathers down that would normally be hidden under the other feathers. Another possibility is it has got some staining (oil or similar) on the feathers.

Could make survival difficult for it, as it won't be so well insulated from cold.

Great pics, everyone.

Melbourne, FL

Great shots in this thread. Love your ultra-sharp Cardinal pic Pelle! I did not have much time outside and only managed a couple not so sharp Vulture pics. First up is the Black Vulture.

That's a stunning pic of the Cardinal sinuatus!

We haven't had any snow here this winter... It's been like an Indian Summer off and on!

Thanks GP! I really like those Vulture shots; its nice that you see both kinds.
