Sod Question..

College Station, TX

Hi everyone. I live in College Station, Texas. My husband and I installed sod in late August '07. We watered it twice a day and had no problems. So when would be a good time to add fertilizer? And...6 months later...is it ok to put something like Scotts S Max Southern Weed and Feed at Fire ant Killer on it? (I've already looked into using this kind) We do have weeds and fire ants in various areas, and after spending as much money as we did on the sod, I really want it looking good! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!!

What kind of sod did you buy?

I am trying to be organic with my lawn and garden, although I have so many ants I may have to cheat a little.
I think the only thing that is good to put on your lawn now is a pre-emergent herbicide.
We installed St. Augustine sod this year also and it has really done well. We did a lot of site prep before hand, including tilling some topsoil into the whole yard and hand pulling every weed.
Although we are on a greenbelt and we tend to get a lot of weeds because of the field behind the house.
I have found the best control for keeping the weeds under control is just routinely mowing it and making sure it doesn't get too tall (and not mowing it too short). The weeds don't have a chance to set seeds and the grass chokes them out. If a big one sneaks in, I hand pull it.
I have read before that some of the weed-n-feed products actually do more harm than good.
Hopefully someone with more technical knowledge will chime in.

I am with you - pulling by hand does a wonders. get them small! Has anyone ever used cayene pepper sauce on fire ants? Certainly a cheap idea. I'll let you know if it works. My bug guy just came so it will be a while.

I have also heard that you can pour boiling water on the mounds and that will take care of them. Haven't tried it though since I don't have fire ants (knock on wood)

Sometimes I like the ants.....when I can feed the snails to them!
