a tussy mussie is a historical flower arrangement that was made during the victorian era. It was used to hide bad smells and also was thought to keep away diseases shuch as the plague!!!

Made from herbs, rose petals, lavender, etc and left to dry, it was also scattered on the floors and beds to keep parasites away, that's how we got our modern potpourri, the French were really big on the stuff way before then as they were classed as the smelliest nation in Europe, but turned out to be the best perfume makers, well guess they had longer to practice, good luck, WeeNel.

How is that different from a nosegay?

I don't think it is, just a different name for something very similar.

hmmm ... I just saw this thread. I used to make what I called Tussie Mussie's - would cut a square of tightly woven netting (can't for the life of me remember what it's called) and cut a square of pretty lace about the same size. Lay the lace down on a table, put the netting on top .... put poutpourri in the center and gather up the ends and tie with a pretty ribbon! Stick them in lingerie drawers to keep your "undies" smelling pretty, or just sit out on the dresser or night stand! Very easy to make ... years ago they were quite popular. I used to buy herbs, spices and petals from San Francisco Herb Co. and mix different scents to make little Tussie Mussie's for family and friends!

Things like that with the potpourri I always knew as sachets, tussie mussies were little bouquets. Guess different things go by different names depending on where you are in the country!

Correct ecrane3 ... the little things I used to make are actually sachet's ... tussie mussies are the little bouquets! I just used to call my sachet's tussie mussie's ... instead of the little flower bouquet's in fabric pouches, I had the fragrance with the herbs, flower petals and spices tied up in lace pouches. But the correct description of a tussie mussie is actually the little flower bouquet's.

Oh, OK, I thought maybe this was another one of those things that people in different parts of the country called by different names!

Naah ... just me mislabeling it! LOL. Anyway, I love the Tussie Mussie Bouquet's and I love the little Sachet's too!

I love the sachets and hadn't thought about that in ages. I'm always trying to come up with a little special "something" for people who do things for us during the year. Most are women and I think those would be a big hit. I have the roses already working and am planting a lot of perennials and annuals this year, so I should have the necessary items to work with. Thanks for the idea, ladies :)

Oh yes, Rose petals are wonderful for the little sachet's! Just experiment with your mixing of scents, it's lots of fun!

I have a rose called Sheer Bliss, it's a htea and touchy as the devil, but the smell is one of the reason's I putz with it. It is aptly named. The petals hold the fragrance for a long time and since it is creamy colored it's lovely in the mix.

I had many roses years ago but am down to maybe 2 and they don't look so great. I have one Queen Elizabeth that has been hanging on for many years. I used to love the fragrance of Tropicana and Climbing Don Juan had a nice fragrance. I had some very, very fragrant roses at one time but can't remember the names.

Mine come out looking more like the one in the 2nd picture. Zuzu's looks like the first one, so go figure.
