I'm a newbie with a question for people who have grown strawberries in towers or containers or other such devices. I have never grown strawberries before, but I know it is important to mulch them heavily for the winter to protect them. What I'm wondering is, with these towers, how does one do that? With the plants poking out the sides, it seems impossible, and as I am in zone 6, it seems like any above ground container will freeze solid no matter what. Do I need to disassemble the tower for the winter? If so, what do I do with the plants? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!
Freezing Issues with strawberry towers?
You can either wrap some fleece around the towers, you buy the fleece from garden centers or DIY, it is very light weight and lets enough light in to keep the plants happy and also wont allow the plants to dry out, or, you could take the plants under cover, either indoors into a cool place like a garage or outhouse, or make some form of cage for the towers, then wrap polythene around the cage, all they need is to be kept above freezing, lastly, you could make a straw wrap for the towers, this will also help insulate them and frost free, every now and again you will need to look the plants over to make sure they are OK. god luck. Thank you so much, WeeNel! I had not thought of wrapping them with insulation (duh!). Goes to show how much I have to learn!
