What kind of plant was it?

Carrollton, TX

I'm not sure where I should post this, so point me in the right direction if there is a designated spot.

About two years ago, I moved into a house that had very odd looking planst growing along the side of the steps.

Some were under the house, to the side of the steps, and even a few in direct sunlight.

The soil varied from soggy, moist, to dry with the plant only changing from a lighter shade of green (under the house) to a darker shade (in direct sunlight).

The plant was some kind of a succulent with medium-sized triangular shaped fleshy leaves and a very firm stalk. The leaves grew from the stalk at a very horizontal direction, and formed right angles to the nearest leaf to its side. Four leaves would be on the same plane, then the next layer would have leaves lined perfectly with the ones above and below. The leaves were not too thin, but they weren't very wide, and gently curved upward on the side. The larger plants formed tiny pale "flakes" on the edge of the leaves, which would over take the plant during the summer. The older plants stood straight up on a single stalk, standing about 2 to 3 feet in height.

The plant could be propagated by leaf cuttings and stalk cuttings. They rooted in water and/or moist soil, often forming fleshy root structures in as few as three days. Sometimes I'd find a whole new plant emerge from a leaf that had fallen off.

When we moved I took 6 small plants (4 in. - 6 in. in height) with me. I planted four in a partially shady area and kept two indoors to make more from cuttings. In about two months the small plants outside had doubled in size. By then it was summer again and the edges were lined with pale "flakes." These flakes were some kind of flower as by fall I had 20-30 small 1-2" plants popping up from under the dry leaves.

Another odd feature about the plant was the lack of insect life near them. Ants would steer clear of them as would mosquitoes. I kept a few plants on the front porch because of their effectiveness as insect repellent.

When we moved again, I was unable to take any of the plants with me (long story).

Does anyone know what kind of plant this was? It was a wonderfully resilient plant that was very easy to maintain. It grew just about as fast as the Purple Queens I have now.

Thank you!

This plant looks identical to the ones I had and behaves in very much the same way. Apparently someone had let this plant get away from them, I took it with me to yet another house, and I'm sure the tenants at the second house might take a liking to the plant as well (or maybe not? I did plant them in the flower garden, oops!).

I live in an apartment on the second floor, so I think I'll be able to keep it contained.

Once again, thank you very much, I couldn't find it at any of the nurseries nearby.
