Narcissis bulbs

(Zone 7a)

Hello, all.

I was in Oregon recently and my sister-in-law gave me some narcissis bulbs to bring home. I put them in the garage to stay cool and found them sprouting and growing roots in the bag. Should I plant them now? There is snow outside so I don't think I should put them there but could I pot them up? Can I grow them in a vase with just water or do they need soil?

So many questions...

Here is a pic. There are five bulbs in the bag.

You probably ought to pot them up at this point. A rule of thumb I dimly remember is to plant them at a depth of about 2-3 times the bulb diameter.

You can plant them outside anytime after the ground becomes workable. All this is assuming these are a hardy form of Narcissus, not one like paperwhites.

I'm not really sure how hardy they are until I see them. My SIL said they were smaller white ones with a pale yellow center. She had them in a paper sack in her shed. Not paperwhites. I have some of those and these are much larger bulbs.

Since they are already getting "started", you'd better put them in the ground or a pot. I have always heard that you should make the depth of the hole no less than three times the diameter of the bulb. Your growth will still be under the soil, so it should be OK. Just mulch well if outside.

You can always pot them and 'force" them for an early bloom. ;)

They are going in the pot today then.

Thanks for your assistance.
