I want to plan a new section of my garden so that it has interest throughout the season. Is there a schedule somewhere that indicates what blooms when?
I have a small, sunny space approximately 15 ft square. It already has a natural wooden picket fence at the back and a border of Chinese Buford holly bordering the fence inside. This is next to an established section that has mostly azaelas, and an interesting kidney shaped pond with a fountain.
Schedule of what blooms when
If you check out Plant Files, it lists bloom times for many plants. So if you know what plants you have/want, you can look them up and it'll tell you when they'll bloom. Or if you're looking for new plants, there's an advanced search feature that would let you search for things that would bloom during a certain time of year (you might need to be a subscriber to use that search feature)
I would go along to the library and pick up some books on gardening for all seasons, these books have beds, borders, trees and shrubs for colour, texture and flowering/fruiting times for all different areas, they also have good coloured pictures showing colour combinations from spring through to winter, I found them most interesting when I was trying to get lots of climbers for height and ground cover, bulbs and lots of foliage shapes and textures together for the very reason you want, all year round enjoyment from the space we had ready. good luck.
