I walked by a shopping cart at WalMart full of these, dead and dying. I asked the clerk what was going to happen to them. "Trash" was what I was told, so I asked how much. I got them for a .25. I brought them home, separated, and re potted them. The roots were Very dried out. I soaked from the bottom up, and took off all the brown/yellowish leaves that didnt fall off during the handling.
That was 3 weeks ago, and I have only bottom soaked them once since re potting them. The tip of a few of the leaves are still drying out, but they all still "look" okay.
I have 9 pots that look like these.
So far so good.
but..
Is there anything else I can do to "help" these along? I have them in the house. I forgot to grab the care tags that were in the basket too.
Dracaena Marginata 'Tricolor' 's .. I think?
What a great find and lucky for the plants they found a new home...
Good Job!
Your doing a great job but i do not think this one is called tricolor as it does not have the normal pink white and green leaves.
What a great deal! You seem to have the solid green Dracaena marginata. Here's the link to Plant Files for information on this plant: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/732/

I always have to check out the clearance table in Wal-Mart garden center whenever I'm in there! I've bought a couple of orchids and other things for practically nothing when they put them on clearance. Just be careful and look closely for any insects ... I've seen plants with mealy bugs as well as spider mite's on some of the clearance plants.
Thank you for the information.
I make the mistake of bringing home a rescued ivy with mealy bugs about 6 years ago.
They spread to every plant in the house, even the cactus. What a Mess! I got rid of them by spraying every plant and soil with a mixture of baking soda/water and the next day putting them in the shower stall/sink and rinsing them off. The next week I did the same thing with a mixture of Dawn dish-washing liquid/water and rinsing them off. I have a Lot of rescued plants! It was a Mess!
The Dawn mixture helped save a 7' hibiscus. I had two given to me as a gift. They had these weird brown spots all over the stalks and branches that i thought was part of the plant's "unique"ness until the plants started to look Horrible. When i scraped it to see if parts of it were still alive, the spots flaked off. Those were BUGS!? I left both outside, sprayed them heavily with the mixture, and waited. One died, the other's "bugs" dried up and flaked off, and new leaves finally appeared.
My next mistake was a 50 lb bag of "Free" wet potting soil. I was thrilled! I was a re-potting fool! Until I found out gnats had gotten into the open bag.. *sigh
I love this site. I have found out vital information on several plants that I have. After reading everyones input, How I have managed Not to kill these poor things by doing everything Wrong I don't know
My African Violets and Orchids and Xmas Cacti and even the poor Watered down poinsettia's... Thank Ya'll from the bottom of their pots. (re-potted and fixed to your specs)

Hi Bev, yes this is the most wonderful garden! I got a subscription just over a year ago and have been so pleased with all the information I've gotten from this site and I've made so many friends in the process! We have an African Violet forum with really knowledgeable folks who have taught me so much. I have grown an African Violet here and there over the years but really got interested in other plants in the same family since joining DG. You have to be a paid subscriber to access a lot of the forums (African Violet's, Orchids, Cacti & Succulents, Orchid Cactus, Indoor Gardening and Houseplants and so many more! It is well worth the annual subscription fee. I have a lot of plants and fortunately live in an area where a lot of them can stay outside on my deck most of the year! We do get a couple of cold nights in the 30's but thank goodness it is rare. I have met some wonderful folks in this garden and learned so much since joining!
How do you soak from the bottom up? do you just hold it upside down ?
Hi marzissa
I placed the whole flower pot in a bowl of water, and let the plant soak up what every it wanted for a few hours. Then put the flower pot back in the decorative bowl I had it in.
I fill up the water bowl again and put another flower pot in to soak.
To make the process quicker.. I use a Large 2" deep platter and do a number of them at a time.
It makes it easier to fertilize too. Just mix up the fertilizer in a milk jug and the plant just soaks up what it wants.
Upside down could get a little messy..

Ah I see thanks
