Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - SB Edition
Sharron - from my point of view you're totally correct about middle school. My daughter was the female with the most awards in grammar school. Beginning with Junior High School her marks were awful. I asked her why and she responded, "I can't let them know I'm smart". It only lasted a few weeks, thankfully. She graduated from college with only one student with more honors and that was when she traveled 160 miles a day to get to school and was in the process of divorce and the mother of a five year old daughter.
Now it's exactly the opposite with my granddaughter and the drive to excel is obvious as are her marks.
I agree - middle school STINKS! DD#1 had ADD which didn't show because everyone's grades did a nose dive. DD#2 has high marks and gets called a lot of things which I cannot repeat on this G-rated site, by her 13-y.o. school mates.

bbrookrd: thanks for the link to the Seattle times article on the Kennewick issue. Sounds like a real mess, and I wonder what they really know about the skeletal remains.
I remember as a grad. student at San Diego State one day the office was invaded by a group of Indians dressed in War Paint and wearing the feathered war bonnets of Plains Indians. This was clearly an invasion. It was scarry to see this many Indians dressed in full war regalia standing in the middle of the anthropology department. Not the way San Diego indians might have looked at all. They were protesting some indian burials grounds that had been opened at one of the Missions near by. The department chairman finally convinced them to leave, but it was definitely an hour or so of tense confrontation -- agression mostly on the part of the Indians.
They represented some militant group that had nothing at all to do with local indians. Not many San Diego Indians are left.
All of the archeology that I am familiar with is an effort to recover cultural information that would otherwise be lost due to construction such as highways, or reservoirs, or the Tenn-Tom Waterway or Nuclear Plant sites. Not many archaeologists just go out and dig something up for the heck of it.
My nine year old son asked his five year old brother to play a little while ago. The five year old told him 'I need some me time'. Can you believe it?!! He got it from tv. Gonna have to unplug that thing asap.
Could have been a lot worse if he was listening to hip hop music.
True. I hesitate to call that music.
Ah, Victor....Pirl and I can tell you what our parents thought about Elvis.
and I can tell you what mine thought about The Beatles !
LOL!
I remember how my step-father hated the Beatles.
He wanted to plop them into a barber chair & go at it!
And what my great grandparents thought about Rudy Vallee!
gabagoo...in comparison to later bands, the Beatles' hair was SHORT !
Ahhhhh, I loved the Beatles. I ironed my hair so it would be straight like theirs.
It didn't work.
LOL Sharran...they have those flat irons for hair now...
One of my DS's used to iron her hair...she ruined it really bad once...not to mention that the whole house smelled like burnt hair.
Yep, JD....I do remember that smell.
and Yep, again.....I 've worn out a few of those little flat irons even these days.
The ironing was not nearly as bad as the orange juice cans.
I had a friend in HS who used to iron her hair.
She wanted it to look like Cher's (in her Sonny & Cher days)
That with her white Go-Go boots, mini skirt (which she had NO BUSINESS wearing), pea coat and Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds) eyeglasses - she was a walking 60's Fad Girl.

i think i mentioned that, growing up with naturally curly hair (which i hated in the Farrah era of feathered hair), i heard about women in the 60s ironing their hair and thought, "Yes! That is the answer!"
But no one mentioned the part about towels.
Fortunately i started with a little at the ends.
gabagoo..too funny !
One of my DS's...the one with the curly hair...which she fights with 24/7 , will only come to visit me when she can be guaranteed of low humidity (HELLO ! I'm 4 blocks from the OCEAN !!! ) ...her life revolves her hair and the atmospheric conditions.
She can arrive here at noon...with straight hair...and an hour later I'm telling her, "QUICK !!! GET INSIDE NOW. IT'S GETTING BIGGER BY THE MINUTE".
In the 70's she figured out that she could spray "Liquid Cling Free" (the stuff you use in your clothes dryer...which btw they only sell now in sheets...)in her hair and it would keep her hair straight even in humidity. She stock-piled that stuff and had enough of it to last for years.
JD...what you don't know, is that with this kind of hair, you can feel it curling. It is like a little tickle or tug on your scalp...like those hairs are standing on end saying, 1,2,3 now everybody CURL!!
Amy.....I stuck with being Dyan Cannon during the FF years. Forget the feathering.
I came in too late! What happened with the naughty seeds link? Did it break DG rules? Oh well, guess I could use my imagination.
It's been fantastic reading this thread here tonight. I wish I was with you here last night. Thanks for the education Gloria! I'm gonna bookmark this thread.

Sofonisba - the naughty seeds thread was pulled today.
It was decided that although the common names for plants may be "naughty", usually the Latin names weren't.
By giving the thread the title using "naughty", it might attract minors.
Both Trish & Dave pointed out that there are subscription holding-minors here at Dave's and some of the posts were getting a bit too suggestive.
I agree that this thread is very educational. I had half-expected, during the Galapagos Islands conversation, that we would go off and discuss global warming. In my opinion, and it's just my opinion, global warming is a natural phenomenon that takes place with natural regularity ~ like the El Ninos.
Harper, the "Naughty Seeds" thread was removed and I understand the Texas forum had a thread removed also for being rude. Not sure if it was one and the same..don't think so.
I found it commical that the Texas forum has a thread called "Cabin Fever". I started thinking they don't know what real cabin fever is, but it does seem they may have a slight idea. It is supposed to sleet in some parts of Texas today. Which is sad as they have some plants that can't take that type of weather. As competitive as they are with us I wish them no weather that would harm their plants and wildlife. So if you Taxans are lurking here, I hope you know we have no ill feeling and hope all your plants survive and wish you the best of luck!
Funny story about your curly haired sister, JD!
My mother was one of the 20's flappers and while she had straight hair her sister had the curls so she'd get my mother to iron it (with a towel) but the irons back then were the kind heated on the wood stoves.
I did save that naughty thread if anyone wants me to email it to them.
Celeste - no, they were two different threads. Texas really is in for some nasty weather so I do wish them the best.
According to my home page JD got more rain in a week than the previous 12 months!
Wow!
I saw that on the news...because of the fires they had this is not good!
It is so sad to see palatial homes and swimming pools sliding down the hillsides when southern California gets too wet.
They are due to get another heavy rainfall from Saturday into Sunday.
The latest thing for California is the possibility for tornadoes amidst the snow and rain!!!
I'll take NY any time!
I guess that's the price they have to pay for eating watermelons in January.
I'm on Victor's side!
That's a high price for watermelons, Gloria!!! (Birthday girl)
Sure is 'spensive watermelons.
We did indeed get slammed with rain yesterday. There was also a tornado warning, but it never happened. The winds were horrible.
Our beaches here become the dumping grounds from the street run-off from up in L.A. Their storm drain channel empties down here, and you guys wouldn't BELIEVE what washes up down here...veriatable mountains of debris. Sometimes it sits there for weeks before they can haul it way. Once it's gone, it's OK...but since we have no waves here, the water get's pretty nasty.
Makes the East River sound pristine.
...and I get annoyed when I see a paper coffee cup on one of our many beaches out here! Yes, I pick it up and put it in the container.
In the 40's (I think) they built a breakwater here to protect the port and the off-shore oil rigs. That stopped all wave and tidal action, so what we have is basically a big pond.
There's been an ongoing battle over removing the breakwater to restore the beaches, but it'll never happen. Properties will be destroyed and a purged beach situation will result.
They ruined a perfectly good stretch of beach here and reduced it to a lake.
