My weeping hemlock did great for two years after planting. Since the spring of 2007, it has become anemic looking (yellowish) and is losing needles at the very tips of its branches. It gets sprinkler water for ten minutes twice per day from April through October (I live in Eastern Washington). Any ideas? Thanks!
Weeping Hemlock
That sounds like way too much water to me. The only thing I can imagine needing water twice a day would be a newly planted lawn, definitely not a tree/shrub that's been in the ground for 2 yrs. I would cut back considerably on the watering, the best thing to do for trees and shrubs is to water infrequently but deeply, that encourages the roots to go deep down in the soil. I don't know your climate or what kind of soil you have so it's hard to recommend what the appropriate frequency might be, but what you can do is stick your finger down a few inches into the soil, if it still feels moist then don't water. Only water when it feels dry a few inches down. When you do water, you probably want to do it for longer than 10 minutes, unless your soil is clay in which case you may want to water 10 min, stop for a while to let the water soak in, then do another 10 min, etc. But I would guess even in the warmest weather, doing a watering like this a couple times a week ought to be enough.
