Are Hawaiian Blue Eyes hardy?

Fullerton, CA

I'm planting my parkway with Hawaiian Blue Eyes for groundcover instead of grass. I noticed a few of my Blue Eyes are dying, not sure if it was the cold temps or lack of regular watering. Any hints? In the past I watered mine very little and they always looked great, but just didn't grow as fast. I live in S. California, temps rarely go below 30 degrees. Thank you!

Did you just plant them recently? Plant Files lists them as hardy to 10a so they should be hardy for you, so you're probably about at the limit of their hardiness. I've found when I plant things that are borderline hardy in the fall/early winter, they have a much lower success rate making it through the first winter, so I generally wait and plant the borderline stuff in the spring so it has plenty of time to get established before cold weather comes again.

If they've been in the ground for longer, it could be a combination of cold and not very much water. Things that are well hydrated are going to be less likely to suffer damage if you get the occasional frosty night, so if you've been skimping on the water then they might get frost damage more easily than they would otherwise.

I also wouldn't jump to the conclusion that they're dying--if they did get hit by a little frost, the leaves may look ugly right now, but it's possible the plant may come back in spring and put out new leaves. So don't dig them up and throw them away yet--leave the damaged foliage on them until the spring since it can help protect the rest of the plant from future cold damage.
