2 questions for yall

Orrville, OH(Zone 5b)

How difficult is iceberg lettuce to grow? I found radishes to be almost too easy LOL

Second, anyone have a good way to keep groundhogs out of the garden? My son planted, among other things, some green beans last year. They got not a one, the groundhogs got them all LOL

Thanks in advance for your help!

I grew it in Virginia so it should not be difficult in your climate. Either buy plants or start seeds early enogh to get transplants in the ground right after the spring thaw. The major problem is heat, making them more difficult to grow in the south.

There's an iceberg type called Summertime that stands the heat better than the older variety.

Buttercrunch is a good lettuce variety for OH.
As for the groundhogs the only solution I know of is removal. They will keep moving back in from the surrounding area though.

Thanks yall. I did see the buttercrunch, and I'll look for Summertime.
Megan, hello neighbor! You're about 30 min west of me!

I've got an article coming up in about a week about new heat-resistant lettuce varieties.

Just be aware that Buttercrunch is a Bibb /butterhead type. Much easier to grow in heat than the iceberg/crisp head types. Summertime is an iceberg type, sounds good but I have not tried it

I grew Summertime last year and was very impressed by how long it stood in the heat. Not through our August heat wave, but through July. I've ordered more for this year.

I grow the lettuces in succession, some seeds one week, the next lot two or even a month apart, especially in the heat as then I have them ready at all different times and not so much waist when the heat is too strong, I find IF, I get a really hot spell, the plants run to seed quickly because of water being evaporated faster in the hot days, but dont get the varieties you have, will look out for the seeds when I visit USA March. good luck. WeeNel, are we allowed to send you seeds?
