CLOSED: Second Chance Wishlist #6 !!

toronto, Canada

Thanks so much Jan - what a great site they have perennial poppies "in stock" and ship to Canada!! Thanks again. KD

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Ok, I got everybody who posted above.

KD2000, I have some perennial poppies upstairs from WZ (haven't gotten to the poppies yet on the repackaging), do you want me to tag some for you? I feel certain there is red, pink and white, if you have a preference, although I don't know for absolute sure. Seemed like most were somniferums, but I did see some orientalis (perennial)

Suzy

Thanks so much Suzy, I would love white and pink perennial poppies!!! And let me know if you need these recent offerings summarized or if you are pulling the seeds as people request them. Thanks again ... and I probably should stop the seed ordering until the swap arrives :-)) KD

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm pulling as people request them -- boy! It goes a lot faster!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

If there are any spare oriental poppies - I would be delighted to receive them

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Okay, I still have a million poppies left. I mean a MILLION!

Some are really old, but poppies have a long life, so I 'm not too worried; just sow more than you normally would. The great thing about poppies is you can direct sow as long as the seed will hit bare ground and not mulch or leaves (and of course you can't use Preen or other pre emergent herbicides)

They fall into the following categories:

P. somniferum darks (reds)
P. somniferum lights ([pink, poss lav or white)

P rhoes (the red corn poppy -- it's so pretty, and I am not getting any hits on it!) This is the one thing I will take all the extras on for myself, so Oink away.

Maybe P. nudicaule Can you believe I forgot already?

P. orientalis

California Poppy -- all are orange or yellow or a mix of the two. I do not necessarily know if this seed will be good, since it is a different genus than Papaver. But they are pretty.

If you want some of these, NOW is the time to oink! I can send as many as you can plant, but as with all of WZ's seed, they must be sown this year. If you want to say, I can take anythingthat is ________ and put some qualifiers behind it, I am happy to go searching for your exact request.

Bluespiral, I have hunted and hunted for the 2 you are specificaly looking for, but they are just not here: (P. alpinum - mixed or white or pink, P. anomalum, or any dwarf poppy growing lower than the ones listed above)

Everybody, post here and I'll pull them as you post.

Suzy

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Suzy, oink, oink on all the poppies please. I have quite a few places left to put them.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Don't forget Suzy - you sent some seeds with me to sort, and this little piggie has fallen behind and not sorted them out yet. I'd be willing to bet I have some of those poppies. I'll get on that today and post those as soon as I can.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Poppy seeds can last 5-8 years. I will take any you want to send my way :-) but especially oriental poppies Thanks soooooo much :-)

toronto, Canada

Hi Suzy, glad the "pulling" system is working well :-)) I would love any perennial poppies as I mentioned and white/pink/coral single annuals for my beds. Also happy to receive any self sowing annuals (that others do not want) that can fend for themselves on paths & hillside slopes around the house that are not "tended & watered planting areas" - but only if they end of being leftovers. Thanks so much. KD

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Seandor, I got you. The thing is, I don't think you can direct sow the perennial kinds, is that ok?

Dryad, That is astonishing! I have so many here, how could you possibly have more ? LOL!

Cat64129, If you're reading, what do the butterflies and hummers think about poppies? Papaver somniferum?

Robynznest, I guarantee it will be beautiful there...I've been plucking poppies for you from the beginning since your wish list was:

POPPIES!!
More Poppies!
Any kind of Poppies!!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I know I am oinking at the trough . . . but just in case . . . . does anyone have:

perennial lobilia lobelia spp.
jupiter's beard centranthus ruber
sea thrift (armeria maritima)
astrantia major
acanthus spp. (bear breeches)
bergenia
epimedium spp.
symphytum caucasicum caucasian comfrey
campanula fenestrellata (Adriatic Bellflower)

Guess who has been looking through a book on perennials???? :-)

Sorry . . . . but I thought I would ask.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL! KD, You and I will have to fight over seeds... that self sowig business was MY idea.

(And I'm just kidding, I *think* there might be enough seed here for both of us. ROTFLMAO!)

With all the poppies here, and all WZ's tags have photos so I can see what they look like, but with all the pictures and the huge variety, my very favorite is still the Shirley Poppy you get at the dollar store 4/$1.00.

Suzy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I will just start the oriental poppies later. Some of the perennials I start won't actually be planted into the gardens until the fall - especially one's that won't bloom their first year.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Seandor, I just pulled the bergenia for you.

I think I saw a single package of Great Blue Lobelia on someone's list. Maybe it's upstairs in WZ's seeds...hmm, I'll run up and check.

IN case I forget what I'm up there for, put that on your problem list and when I call for them, that's one I might need a reminder on.

ILLOQUIN,

Not all poppies are there yet, If we're lucky some more will arrive at your doorstep.....

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, Lord!!! I forgot about yours, Tuinkabouter! LOL! When I asked you to send extras, it was only because I didn't have WZ's pckage when we were talking about it.

Well, it's going to be really pretty here :)

Suzy

toronto, Canada

You can never have enough poppies!! :-))

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thank you! Thank you, Susy! My gardens thank you! My family thanks you! My neighbours thank you!

I think you are earning a special place in Heaven . . . . .

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hearing the voice of the Wicked Witch of the West . . . . "poppies . . . poppies" cackle

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OINK OINK .... Suzy - if you have left overs, doesn't matter the color or kind ... I'll take some too.
I know i already have some big 'peony'? white ones coming ... but bright colors are always great for bees and butterflies.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Poppies have always been my favorite, I love them all.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Do ya think th epoppies would grow down here in the heat, drought and high humidity?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Starlight I saw some lady from Texas growing them in the CG forum pictures, or maybe in the dahlia forum (the subject came up)

I'll slip some (annuals) in and you can try them. I'd put half the seeds in the freezer and sow in September and they should bloom all winter if you are in the southern part of the state. The other pack you can sow right now. They'll die off after blooming in summer (at least they do here)

Suzy

never have enough poppies...how true :))

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

I don't know if anyone grows poppies in FL. They do look pretty, tho. You all will have to show me pictures when they bloom, so I can enjoy them, too. : )

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

oh gosh...............you all would have to be talking about poppies.............sometime during the coarse of this swap I decided I have to try growing poppies! I never have before because the new growth looks so similar to an invasive thistle we have here, which I'm trying to keep in check.

I rec'd Lauren's grape to try from our last swap and a few folks (dryad, do you know which one it is?) are sending me poppies in this swap. I can't wait. I really want to try the breadseed poppies which I'm not sure but I believe is any P. somniferum's (opium poppy). I had seen a particular color combo that I REALLY LOVE this one if anyone ever gets it or has it I would love to try it. Also, I would love to try the hens and chicks poppies

the photo is from a google image search, not my photo

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Suzy.. I didn't know poppies could bloom through the winter. If ya have just a couple seeds to try would be nice. Please don't send me gobs. LOL I woudl hate to have them and they not make it her e with our funky weather.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Suzy, are there any perennial poppies in that bunch I don't know a poppy from a whole in the ground lol If there is I would like some doesn't matter what color or height :)

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

the Hungarian white breadseed is lovely and this color too I love....sort of looks burgundy to me....I don't know if the Lauren's grape is more purple or burgundy?

again I got the photo from a google image search, not my photo

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

hey wind - you're on my list for Breadseed Poppies, but that's a quick check. I'm trying to sort through the seeds Suzy gave me a week ago to get them babies posted here - LOL!

Robin

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

the 'Lauren's Grape' is really purple. I wish I had a really good picture of it. It's much deeper purple than the pic shows. gorgeous color. I have some seed if anybody wants that one in particular. it's an annual.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Seandor, I know I have some astrantia major, but I think it's 2005 seed (possibly even 2 colors). I may have some jupiter's beard (centranthus ruber) left...had a ton of it, didn't you get any in the last swap? I'll dig and see if there's any left.

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

I hate when you post and it doesn't show up. Suzy I would love any poppies-but would definitely like some perrenial ones if possible.
Seandor, I think I can eek out another small trade of great blue lobelia. If you don't get astrantia or epimedium, I have both-but DID NOT collect seeds this year. If you want to put me in trade tracker, I have lots of plants to collect from for both.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Suzy- If there are any poppies left in the piggy trough I would be happy to have some, any kind would be lovely!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8a)

I don't know if these are still out there, (or if I just imagined seeing them) but if there are any stray schizanthus pinnatus I'd love to have them
Caroline

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

No, those were one of the very first to go, however, if you go to buy it, the seed is pretty cheap. Can I offer you some poppies? LOL!

Everybody above, I have your poppies in your cans, and I still have more to go. I know some of the people above can take more, and I am happy to do that, but if there is anybody else, let me know.

I can't imagine what WZ's place must look like at poppy time!

Suzy

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Here is a link saying Aquilegia seed should be good for at least 5 years, andin fact older seed will be easier to germinate. The source is JL Hudson himself, so I think we can count on that number. WZ has some older seeds, and I'm going to start listing them tomorrow, but I want you to know although they're old, they have been stored in the refrigerator.

In sorting through things last night, I wasn't able to finish enough to list everything, but I do have some of Fireweed (Senecio) from WZ, if anyone is interested in that. I don't know the species as they were gathered, but it's in the Aster family.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi Dryad,

This is your Fireweed...

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1348/

It gets very mixed reviews in Plant Files, so I'm not sure what to think. The photo is beautiful.
