CLOSED: Second Chance Wishlist #6 !!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

We came from here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/804557/

Sorry, but this Seed Swap is closed

The deadline is Feb 1 for seeds to be into me, and I will mail them back 2 weeks later, on Valentine's Day. There is a 100 pack limit on seeds going back to you, so if a 1 for 1 trade is important to you, send 100 packs or fewer. All participants should tell me how many packs they sent and how many packs they want back.

Limit quantities to 5 of a kind
Herbs ok, but No Veggies, No Shrubs or Trees. (for the general swap, it's ok to send these if you can find a person who wants them)

Limit the commonest seeds to 2 packs, unless you are sending them to a specific person:
COMMON SEEDS:
Morning Glories: Ipomoea purpurea
Brown Eyed Susan Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia triloba
Datura
Nicotiana sylvestris
Gaillardia
Liatris
Cleome
Four O Clock's (except Broken Colors, Kaleidoscope, etc.)
(If you want any of those listed above, please let me know!)

*2006 seeds:
No Delphinium
No Larkspur

Some seeds are premium seeds because they are rarer and "worth more". As loose packs of seeds come in, I sort of separate those out and distribute them in a way that makes sense in terms of what people send in. If you send in a lot of commercial half packs, or the more premium seeds, you will get more of those back in your envie.

WISHLIST
The last wrinkle is your wishlist! When you sign up, also post 10 things you'd like to have. These can be specific (Lupine 'White Snow') or vague (anything white for part shade).

I need to know what you want before your seeds show up! I have quite a stash myself and need to start seriously culling. Tell me the kinds of things you want!!!! In a private Dmail to me (with the subject line 2nd Chance Wishlist Swap) send your list of 10 or more things you'd really like AND a list of 10 things you really don't want. LOL! It would be so helpful to me if you also added things about you and your garden, such as: I have a Moon Garden; I have too much shade; I have a cutting garden; a Cottage Garden; I like bright colors; big & bold plants; pastels; pinks and purples; I am new to seed growing; I have every seed known to man, try to surprise me. Whatever you can tell me about yourself or your garden will help me sort seeds you'll like into your envie.

Things to pack up for the swap:
1. Your seeds. added: Since I need to send back as many packs as people send in, I need some help counting the packs.. LOL! On the baggies that are tagged for certain people:

Added: I'd like the number of packs you've enclosed for that person written on the slip of paper with their name so I don't have to go rooting through to count them.

2. Return address label (or piece of paper I can tape) to use on bubble mailer you send to me.

3. I will need at least a 10 x 14" envie, or a little box, to get your seeds to you. (The PO has a 3/4 inch limit on bubble envie thickness)

4. Postage to return your mailer to you. If you have 100 packs, use postage for 13 oz. and consider sending me a little box instead of an envie. added: If you want lots of extra packs back, really, really consider that box! And pay attention to the postage amount you send me as it will cost more than what you sent in. Do not be stingy on this postage. You may use stamps or dollar bills, but no metered postage.

5. A sheet of paper with your:
1. name,
2. address,
3. email,
4. DG name,
5. Number of seed packs sent, and number of seed packs wanted back
6. Description of your garden, and yourself as a gardener and grower from seed (new, middle, experienced.)
7. 10 things you want,
8. 10 things you don't want, and
9. a list of all the loose seed packs you are sending that are not earmarked for another player. (so you don't get the same packs back)

6. Added Jan 9, 2008. Due to the sheer volume, I need to send these envelope or boxes back to you with delivery confirmations which cost an additional 75c.

7. Added Jan 11, 2008. Weezingreen's seeds came today! A big batch that cost her $26.00 to send. There are 26 people in this swap. Hmm. I am not saying send in a dollar postage to reimburse her postage costs -- but as Jiminy Cricket says, "Let your conscience be your guide."

I think I have everything, but I'm sure I'll edit this at least once, so check back to this page right before you send your seeds. LOL!

Getting the seeds ready to go - How big is a small box? I have a small chocolate box but it is pretty full with stuff I am sending . . . and I am pretty sure I am getting back more than I sent!

What are other people using?

I first used a big padded envelope.... but i should have used the Priority Mail box.

the post office has a good site that shows all the box sizes... if you are getting A LOT of seeds back, i'd recommend the box.

I'll go find the link.

>>I have a complete listing of who I'm sending what to but not sure how to copy and paste it in a post

All you have to do.... have the one window [or tab] open with all the list... you can "Select All" [Ctrl + A] (that will highlight everything) click [Ctrl +C] (for COPY)

then move to the message you are posing in .... and do a Ctrl + V [for PASTE]
this can also be done using the "right click"

How many seeds per packet?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Weez, I'll have some seeds to the 'Bill Wallis' hardy geranium (on your want list) this summer I hope if the freeze/thaw process doesn't get my plants I'm keeping my eye on them lol I just planted them last summer. I won't forget you lol I did get some plants out of the 'Splish Splash' that you sent me too thanks!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi , You made it, Pensacola garden.

About 25-30 seeds per pack, how does that sound?

We need lots of lists from you -- you don't have to post them all at once, though

What seeds you are sending

What seeds you want from those listed on thread 5 (the lists of what people are sending) You have to sort of search for those.

Suzy

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

the only seed i have to send is echinacea purpea

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

That's okay. We love purple coneflower!

Who are my butterfly people who can take all the purple coneflower?

James/Pensacolagardens, I sent you a dmail January 14, 2008
7:58 PM. It has all the info (besides the first post of htis thread) and links you need.

Suzy

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I'll take some of that coneflower. Thanks James.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Any box will work as long as the shape and size are within the size guideleines. www.usps.gov

Today I got a package from a submarine sandwich filed with seeds!

It does not have to be a carton, and it doesn't have to be purchased, the seeds will be very protected with all the air space within each baggies. Look around your house: It can be a cereal box, a sub box, a shoe box, whatever. If it has printingonthe outisde, youneedto wrap it in paper so it is not visible. In other words, if it says Cheerios onthe box, all that has to be covered if you are not shipping Cheerios.

Also, if it will fit in a 10 x 14 bubble envie wihtout being 3/4" thick, I can make space here by pulling your seeds out of the baggies....it all depends on how many you're sending in and how many you expect to get back. Greedy piggies have to pay more, is all :))

Suzy

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

James, that means you write her name on one baggie. I see it when it gets here and flip it in her coffee can. Other people, who have a lot of seeds, start a baggies for each person.

Anybody got Zone 9 seeds they can't use?

Suzy

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Suzy --- thread #5 is done and coming over in DOC form.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL! Okay :)

Peeps, I just received 2 absolutely gorgeous envies of seeds from our international players: KD2000 and Tuinkabouter...Oh, my, they have lists and everything is marked so clearly, I am almost unhappy about it. (No room for mistakes on my part, LOL!) ALMOST, I said LOL!

Oh, boy. This is going to take more room than I have allocated for it, I can tell that already.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Easier, Stralight, thank you!!!! I know what is good for butterflies up here, more or less, but I have no idea what some of the southern stuff even is (much less if the butterflies like it)!

Speaking of which, dlephiniums & lupine, James...do those grow down there? I thought it was too hot here in Indianapolis for them.

Suzy

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

yeah i can grow them in pots in the spring

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Suzy, Our butterflies eat about the same things as yours do, if we can grow it. We probably have alot of hosts plants tho, that you might not know about. : )
You will do ok with just about anything, that you think they will like. : )

Vashon, WA(Zone 8a)

Pensacola,
I have some agapanthus seed I would be happy to tag for you. It came from outside the gym. I've already sprouted some for myself and it germinated in no time.

Has this butterfly/hummer swap already started? I couldn't quite figure out who started it.....

Would like to join, though. Looks like I've become totally addicted to this kind of thing!

Its so funny --- I'll be going thru some of the seeds and following the links and think.... OMG... i gotta have it!! but then reality kicks in and i say to myself.... wait til NEXT year....

I am almost done inputting into Excel ... so i have to stop looking.

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

well i will take any that i can get.........lol i will be sending out my packets on tuesday..

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Therese, you read my mind LOL I'll see something and think...how did I miss that one? but I can't possibly plant one more seed than those I've requested. I'm building my spread sheet, too, and it's taking an awfully long time ;0)

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

oh who do i mail them address?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Suzy / Illoquin
she's in the exchange

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Spread sheet.. Who has time for a spread sheet. I still dinging out pack sout seeds into baggies and almost all this seed is teeny tiny and I about to go blind counting.

Thank goodness I almost done. Then it will be double check back over the list a second and a third time, and hope I haven't missed anybody.

If I did happen to miss something for ya, just send me a dmail and I will send it out seperate to ya. I have like envies for over 30 poeple not to inclde general swap and butterfly envie for swap and am about 400 baggies right now between everybody and evrything and stil not quite done.

Most all of my seed comes in commercially and does not come with sowing and sprouting directions. I do not sow like most people. I have my own system and way. If I come acros s something I don't know, I have to look it up. So inside your envie is gonna be you baggies of seeds with the name on it. If you need to know how to sow it. Dmail me and I will tell ya my method, otherwise you will have to look it up.

I am on overload between this swap , research projects and classes, plus sowing my own. If you possibly can't look up how to sow or germinate something, and just have to have the directions right now when your seeds arrive, please let me know now and I will try and download the information for ya and include it.

James.... I have some lupine, delpinium and very few assorted brug seeds. Do you want only the big hanging type brug or do ya want some of the datura too. Some folks call datura a brug too.

What is that old rock -n roll-song, that has the words Blinded by the light. rolled... Well , I changing it to, blinde d by the seeds, LOL

Suzy, got the hummer, buuterfly people seprate from the genral for ya. The seed can go North or South or anywhere's inbetween. With the wind currents and natural disasters around buuterflies and hummers are being displaced and searching for new nectars in different areas. Also, if a ceratin buterfly can't find it's " oh ya I like that food' they will in alot of cases go for other nectar food sources. Withthe heat and drought so bad down here alot of butterfly plants suffered adn didn't produce as much, but because I had any kind of butterfly food out they managed to survive and feed on it.

Ok back to bagging and tagging. Have a good Sunday everybody. : )

(Zone 7a)

Suzy, where you said - "Blue, You are harder than heck to shop for LOL!" - One thing I like about these swaps (and especially ones like yours where there's opportunity to tag individual seeds for individual gardeners) is the mix of folks all up and down the spectrum from just-starting-out to been-at-it-for-ages.

I'm at the end of that spectrum, so 1) by now, I'm pret-ty picky by now and 2) what with vandals, limited well water and focusing funds on keeping hovel from collapsing during the first 10 years of trying to make this garden, I'm getting a charge out of rectifying bygone pains-in-the-posterior by passing along what riches I may now have in the seed department. After all, us hovel-dwellers do have our "seedy" aspects - lol.

ps - regarding my wish list - My post to kd about sun-lovers that could tolerate partial shade was only intended to apply to the sage. I want everyone to know that my garden goes from full sun to part shade and everything inbetween.

Suzy, also, where you said - "I already have one player who cannot get her envie mailed out until Jan 29. I cannot even strat working onthese past what I am doing withWZ seeds until all the envies are here, so as far as I can see there is no rush. I'll let you know if that changes." - I've got most folks' seeds packed and ready to go, but I wouldn't mind an extension on when seeds are due, because I'm expecting some things in the mail that I suspect Weez might be able to use. These are from seed exchanges, which are often in too-small amounts to offer the general swap (although I certainly hope to have harvested seeds in a couple of years).

Colchie - I would love the recipe for chicken korma. If you post it here, I could cut and paste it over to the Recipes Forum (http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/recipes/all/), if that would help.

Y'all - Regarding bags vs boxes, I'm going to send a box to Suzy that is labeled to come back to me, but it will be wrapped inside a recycled grocery bag with labels/postage sending it to her. That way, she won't have to do anything to the box to send it back. How's that sound?

Pensacola - Here's my list of available seeds; unfortunately, it's not up-to-date, so I may not have everything as listed - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4385245 . It's best if you dmail me if you see anything you like or think of anything else in addition to what you listed on your wish list.

What Starlight said - ditto - back to bagging & tagging - I'm sure the seeds will have me quite cross-eyed before I get them all tucked in their baggies & labeled, so will catch up on dmails later this evening when I break.

(Zone 7a)

KD - thank you so much for smuggling Suzy's wish list onto that thread. I see one that I definitely have (Suzy sent me a full packet of Hamburg Parsley through her Stoke's seed swap - this is short-lived seed, so it's gotta get planted somewhere), and a few I might have downstairs or coming in the mail.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8a)

chicken korma - I found tons of different recipes, but this is how I made it:
Ingredients
1/3 cup cashews (bits)
1/3 cup almonds (I used slivered)
5 (or more) cloves garlic
1 inch piece of ginger
vegetable oil few tbsp
3-5 bay leaves
2 large onions
1 tsp turmeric
1/2 -1 tsp cayenne. I used 1/2 and it had a nice kick
cloves 10 whole, or 1/4 tsp ground
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp cumin
1 1/2 tsp coriander
1-2 tsp ground cardamom (some recipes said whole pods that you ground yourself)
1 tsp salt
1 cup plain yoghurt
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/4 cup cream
1/2 can or so tomato paste (little can)
chicken (I used 8 thighs, though most recipes used breasts cut into bite-sized pieces)

Step 1:
Threw garlic, 1 onion, and ginger into cuisinart and chopped very fine..added 2nd onion and chopped it to about 1/4 inch

Step 2:
Toasted nuts in a skillet on pretty high heat for just a few minutes, till lightly browned

Step 3:
Saute onion, garlic and ginger slurry in hot oil - one tbsp should do. Put it aside

Step 4:
Saute chicken till nicely browned in 2 tbsp oil. I dust the chicken in flour/salt/pepper first, which gives them a nice color, and also provides a thickener for later on

Step 5:
Mix the yoghurt/coconut milk/cream and tomato paste and spices and toasted nuts in a cuisinart till it's very fine.

Step 6:
Put the sauted onion mix, bay leaves, and the sauce mix in with the chicken and simmer for about 20 minutes. I ended up adding about 11/2 cup of water, as it was too thick.
