Some updates to the tagging system

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Tada! It works! I love this new system!!! Thanks everyone, especially Dave and your team for making this possible.

There needs to be a way that tags marked private do not show up in the public tag "cloud". really getting tired of clicking on tags with no page.

I have fixed the public cloud so that it doesn't show private tags anymore. Sorry about that!

Thanks Dave.

Thanks for pointing it out. :-)

Hi,

I wasn't so sure about tagging things replacing the favorites, but now I'm really starting to like it. However, I was wondering if it would be possible to set it up in our preferences so we could choose whether to see our tags in list form or cloud form, or even both? I'm trying to group related things using the same tag so that I can categorize and track them. Personally, so far I find the cloud better than a list. To me, if it's just going to show up as a list, then it doesn't matter what the tag says, which to my somewhat confused brain seems to be defeating the point of tags?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I agree, with my tagged page now just showing the list of what I tagged, it doesn't show the tags/labels I assigned to them so now I am back to having to click on them to see why I saved them in the first place. That list will get quite long and time consuming as I save more posts/threads.

For instance, one of my tagged pages is listed as:
Recipes: MistyMeadows picture (SUMMERTIME SUMMERTIME! Let's share)
I have absolutely no idea why I saved it as unless I click on the Edit button and see the post & tag I gave it as :Tomato Pie. (And a question- When we save an individual post, it will start out with the posters name and the word 'picture' such as the tagged recipes, why is that when they clearly aren't pictures?)

So somewhere on that personal page, we should be able to have those tags/labels listed. It was the reason I liked the Favorites because I could rename the saved post to specify exactly why I saved it.

I struggled with this, but then found that I can change the name of the tags by typing it in the title. I am currently only saving personal tags, not for public view.

Sue--If you use your mouse to hold the cursor over the thread title, it'll show you a little box with all the tags that you applied to that thread.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

LOL, thanks Liz, I figured there must be an easier way and I didn't play around long enough to see that!

ok, move along, nothing to see here, I complained about nada. :-)

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

oooo, ecrane, thank you for that - I was running into the same quandry - this makes it "all better" :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

How'd I miss this thread? I need to look at more than my watched threads, I think! Thanks for the updates, Dave. This is cool. :)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Rule #1........The Dave's Garden Forum should be checked everyday.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Dave,
Any way to see what tags have already been applied to a post or thread by someone else?
That feature would help to spread the Cloud growth and trigger people to add more descriptions to their tags I'd think.

Example:
I was looking at the cloud and noticed "Christmas Recipes".
Clicked on and found a bunch of miscellaneous recipes, but no supporting Tags in the cloud..
No sign of them under Cheesecake, Cookie, Pretzel, etc
or under their recipe name..... to help other people along in finding them.
So basically a lump of Christmas Recipes. (Great Recipes BTW)
So I went ahead and added more tags to each one.

I assume in this example these were added as a personal 'Favorites' type of tag.
I don't think many DG'ers have twigged yet to the fact that the more Tags on a post the more it helps others in their searches also.
That will shake out in time as it gets more widely used I'm sure

I'd still like to be able to choose whether to view mine in cloud form or list form.

If I'm tagging everything to a certain category, I want one-click access to the list of combined and tagged choices. To me, it makes no sense to tag anything to a category if they don't reside within the category to be located later.

I realize that others want it the other way, which is why I'd like to see it as a selectable choice in preferences, if that would be possible?

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Thank You, susybell!

I've been trying to avoid saying this, but I really, really prefer the cloud format for my personal tags. I realize it's impossible to please everyone and I see that many people seem to love the new list format but I sure miss the cloud. So nice to hear that I'm not the only one.

Would it be possible to provide both options? Perhaps an additional link at the bottom for changing the personal tags to cloud format?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I liked the cloud for my own, too. Having a choice of which to view would be great.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I agree with susybell.

I only started tagging so I could keep posts/threads I wanted in categories together.

Before I could click on view my tags, and I'd get a nice, small cloud, and from there I could access what I wanted.... now I have to scroll scroll scroll.... or I could click my browser>edit>find in this page, then type in the name of what I'm looking for... unless 6 months from now I can't remember the name of the recipe I want to try, or the Christmas recipe I saved this year to use next year, and by then my tagged pages would take so much scrolling, and mousing over each one to see what it was tagged it would just be easier to go to the search function and type in what I remembered....

Without the personal cloud, or a list of the tags, the tagging is a pointless for me.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I have to add my voice to that, I liked the cloud where I could put everything with the same tag together. I haven't done any more since it was listed, I would end up with pages which I have to hover over each one to see what it is, making the process nearly pointless.

I wanted to be able to tag all my pictures I lost, granted, they will be together in a list but in a mumble jumble fashion. I just wanted to be able to view my own toags on My Info page instead of having everyone elses mixed with them.

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I agree the list in cumbersome and not useful to me. I just use the "Big Cloud".

(Zone 1)

Ok ... Old blonde here - what is the "cloud" y'all are referring to? The things I've tagged are all in alphabetical list form, which is fine with me. I have to be organized and I prefer the alphabetical list but am just wondering what the cloud is. Oh, and so far all I have tagged are articles that I was interesting in keeping for future reference.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Your own tags show up in a list, but if you look at the larger group of tags that everyone's submitted, that shows up as a cloud.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, I've stopped making new tags too. I'm just using the large cloud now.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

plantladylin, scroll back up to the top of this page and click on the Tagged Pages in the Communities box on the right side. That large group of tags is called a 'cloud'.

(Zone 1)

Thanks, I found it ... but being old and liking things in order, I prefer my list of alphabetical tags. Hopefully everyone will have a choice of which way they can show their tags, list form or cloud form.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I'd encourage you to keep applying tags to threads. That is how all the nuggets of gold will find their way into the cloud for everyone. :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ok, one question for Dave and his wonderful Staffs.

What happen to a public thread that happened to be repeatedly "tagged" by various members? Those that are open to public, will they "all" appear on the cloud form? Will that be redundant -- taken up space? How does it work? Just curious.
Thanks

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

The more a tag is used to describe various threads, the bigger the tag's word(s) appear in the cloud. The bigger the text in the cloud, the more threads or posts have been tagged with that word. Is that what you mean?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Awe, there's my Bummy's name nice and big in the cloud. I'm touched. :)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Lily--I think what you're asking is if 10 people all tag this thread with the word "tags", will the same thread show up in the list 10 times when you click on "tags". The answer there would be no, it should just show up once. But the same thread may also show up under different words depending on how people tagged it. So it might show up under "tag", "tags", "new DG features", "cloud", etc

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

ecrane3, thanks that answered my question. Thanks.

North Augusta, ON

Hey Dave, I have clicked on a couple of tags recently in the "cloud" that are somebody's private d-mails. I can't read them, which is good, but they shouldn't be appearing in the public cloud, should they?
