Some updates to the tagging system

I made some updates this morning:

1) You can now view your own tags in list form, just like the old favorites system. Get there by clicking on "My Tools" then "Tags".

a) You can edit an existing tagged page.
b) You can now delete the tags from a page, thus removing it from the list.

2) You can now view the site-wide tag cloud by going to "Communities" then "Tagged Pages"

Dave, you are just wonderful. Thanks so much for making these changes. I especially like that you have given a choice as to whether the tags can be viewed by everyone or not.

I'm a list person, not a cloud person, so love that my tags are now more orderly.

As always, you step up to the plate for your membership and it is much appreciated.

June

Thank You Dave!!

I like this SO much better!! And I feel more comfortable with it.

Sasha

Thanks Dave. :) I too am more comfortable with it. Thank you so much for all your hard work.

Thank you! I like the organization of this better.

Norfolk, VA

Thank you Dave.
This is much easier for us Tag challenged people.

(Zone 1)

Thank you Dave, I love the updated look!

North Augusta, ON

Thank you!!

Have you figured out why a lot of the tags go to blank pages? It is very annoying.

(Zone 1)

I've tagged 37 pages and haven't found any "blanks" yet. The only things I've tagged so far though are the Articles that DG'ers have written on different subjects.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I need some tutoring, how do I tag a fav. thread, article ect....

(Zone 1)

Look up at the top right corner of the page you want to tag and you will see a teeny little icon of a yellow folder. Click on that folder and you have that page tagged ... it will take you to a screen and you type in a name to remember it by and click the little check box if you want it publicly viewed or just for yourself to view.

To later see what you've tagged, go up to the top of the screen, click on "My Info" and on the left side of your info page is a box saying: Your Actions .... scroll down in that box and you will see something that says View Your Tagged Pages.

... I'm so slow I bet someone has already answered this for you!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ah hah, you're the first to give me the easy to understand instruction! Thank you very much.
Kim

(Zone 1)

Kim, you are welcome. I'm glad you could understand my instructions ... I'm not the best at giving instructions.

Lin

Norfolk, VA

plantladylin is VERY good at giving easy to use instructions! I should know.......

(Zone 1)

LOL. Sometimes I don't even understand my own instructions!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

One more question please, this new feature will replace our old "favorites" at Dave?, so if I need to "bookmark" those old favorites, I need to transfer those over to the tags pages? Dave, will those favorites be deleted eventually, if so when?

I've tried to tag some of those favorite, but didn't want to 'misplace' them before they're gone.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yes, from what I understand, they will eventually go away, I think.
You can simply open each one and click the folder again and tag it.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Sue.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

here are some tags that are blank most likely because of the odd letters from copy and pasted words:
gáttaþefur
gluggagægir
ketkrókur
þvörusleikir

(Zone 1)

huh? What language is that? Maybe that's why those pages are blank?

North Augusta, ON

Almost half the tags I have clicked on lately come back as "no pages found"

(Zone 1)

I'm sure there's just a glitch in the system. Since this is so new I'm sure Dave is still tweaking it.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Those are my fault. Sorry.. I'll go back and take them out. (It's Icelandic, by the way.)

I don't know why some are blank, but I'll certainly look into this.

(Zone 1)

LOL Marylyn! I am language challenged! I always wanted to learn a different language, other than English but have enough trouble mastering my birth language!

Did you tag your pages with the Icelandic language? Could that be why the pages are blank? Maybe the Tags don't recognize the language? Hopefully Dave & Co. will see your post and be able to figure it out for you. Hope you don't lose everything you've tagged!

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

I really like the new way tags are sorted, too. Great tweek!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm very happy with the changes also, Dave. Thank you! You always find a way to make us all happy.

Now a question...if I delete the tag from my list, will I delete it also from the public cloud? Or just from my own? I want to remove a bunch that I tagged, but they ought to still be available for others.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Also, this is off topic, but how long before a thread would be stored in an archive, or delete from the public access?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

nap--if you delete a tag, I don't think it'll be deleted from the cloud unless you were the only person who was using it. If others were using it, it'll no longer link to whatever page you had used it for, but other people's links will still be there.

Lily_love--I don't think threads ever get deleted (unless admins remove them for some reason), if you look back at some of the older forums here, you'll see threads that go way back.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I have been cruising old threads and many links in them are now no good. Some were no doubt moved to new forums as they were created so the old links are now useless. Others I believe are gone because a forum was deleted because of lack of new entries. So while most old threads remain available, some have been retired and are gone.

There was also a rather icky period when several disgruntled people childishly asked that all their entries be removed and Dave kindly obliged them. It left many threads making no sense since so many entries were deleted. I don't think that is likely to happen again.

The majority of our threads have and probably will remain intact but there are no guarantees that every posting will be here forever and ever. LOL even the magnificent Dave can't guarantee us an eternal web archive ;~)

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I noticed that a tag I had marked as "private" showed up on the public cloud - when I clicked on it, the result was a blank page. When I went into my personal tags, it was there, and when clicked the thread showed up.

Dave - this rocks!!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Dave,
Thanks for the list! The huge cloud kept me in a "fog!"

One note. Not all my tags are showing up in my list. I tagged a lot more pages than are on my personal page. Could you look into this?

Thanks!

ORGANIZING YOUR "TAGS"
I used the following format to create my tags initially, hoping for the creation of a list format for the personal tags:
Broad Category: Specific Item w/in the Category.

When listing in the "enter your tag" box each item gets separated by a comma. So, here's what my cloud looks like as a list:

Instructions: Sowing Seeds
Instructions: Worm Bin
Instructions: Vermicomposting
Tomatoes: Pruden's Purple
Tomatoes: Seed Starter Shelf
Vermicomposting: Feeding Worms
Vermicomposting: Worm Bin Design

Just a suggestion for tagging future items! Hope this helps.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Is there a way to search through the cloud to find something? If I'm looking for a post that was popular enough for someone to tag it, but I had no idea what they might have called it, do I have to look at each one, or is there an easier way? I started looking for what I thought would be keywords, but then gave up, thinking that there must be a better way.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Gymgirl - are you saying your Personal tags list shows up with the tag name and not the name of the thread, post or article that is tagged? Because my personal tag list is listed alphabetically by the original thread title not by the tag names I used.

Joan - try doing a "find on page" (CTRL-F) for the keyword. For example, I searched for "tomato" and found tags in the cloud all throughout the cloud. Maybe you've already tried that though. Just an idea.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks Brenda! I don't know why I didn't think of that. I found the thread I was looking for, but it had roasted in front of tomatoes. I hadn't thought of looking under the r's for it. :)

Edited because I just opened the tag and it says there's no pages there. I'm wondering if it does that when the member that tagged it marked it private? I'm going to try tagging it again and not marking it private. Can someone see if it shows up in a few minutes? I'm pretty sure it will for me, since I tagged it, but I'm curious if anyone else can see it. It's under Roasted Tomato Sauce "How To"

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I can't see the thread I tagged by going into the big cloud and clicking on Roasted Tomato Sauce "How To". The only way I can see the tagged thread is by going in through my home page/view my tags.

Dave, I don't know if this will help figure out why the threads aren't showing up in the tags, but it's an interesting observation anyway.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Joan - I see it in the public cloud but also get "no page found" when I click on it.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

When I tagged some of the threads, then went back and looked at my tagged page, they're indevidually line up under the original names of the threads. Everyone has the same result? Mine are all marked as "Public".

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

That's how mine show up too. If you hold your mouse over the name of the thread, it'll show you what the tag words were that you used for that thread.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Oh, thanks ecrane3, I shall go back and look.
