I have a question about apple seeds: Can they germinate in the willd, or not?
Do humans have to plant them and grow them, or can they grow without us?
In other words: Is the apple seed a domesticated seed, or a wild seed?
Wild seeds germinate and grow in the wild without us helping them to grow. Domesticated seeds can't germinate unless we nurture them. So which is it?
And if apple seeds can grow in the wild without our aid: how do they do it? If I stick an apple into the ground: can its seeds sprout without me watering it, or taking care of it? Or do they need special attention?
Apple seed germination
An apple seed will grow all by itself.
We have many wild apple trees in the U.P.

Hi Turak, yes apple seeds germinate all by themselves, either by the help of the birds and other animals that eat the fruit, then deposit the seeds out the other end already wrapped within a little blob of manure (bird or animal poo) naturally, they wont all grow into apple trees as there is always weather conditions and animals that munch away at the tender seedlings as they are also feed for some animals, if you want to germinate the seeds all by yourself, then time is important, spring is good for germinating fruit seeds, cut the apple up, gently slip out the seeds, give a wash say in a tea strainer and set them on paper to dry away from heat, then following day, plant the seeds/pips into a shallow pot of compost and water them when the compost gets a bit dry, keep caring for then that way till you see the little seeds have 2 sets of leaves, then separate them into an individual pot and care the same way, after about year or two, you can set them out in the growing place, but do remember to protect them in winter with either an empty juice carton ( Plastic) cut the bottom off and slide this over the tiny tree till all dangers of frost is gone, you might have to insert a garden cane into the up turned bottle to stop the wind blowing it away, remove the top from the juice bottle as this lets air into the foliage and will stop any danger of build up of moisture evaporation sitting on the foliage when the sun does shine. so good luck. hope this helps, Oh forgot to mention, you may not get fruit as you need both sexes to pollinate the flowers when they eventually start to arrive, but that could take up to ten years from growing the seeds. Weenel.
Yes, Apple Seeds straight from the apple will quickly sprout. I plan to play Jonny Appleseed this year along th biways in this small town. ( %-)
I grow my own trees from seeds that are taken fromthe best apples when we make applesauce each fall. I stratify them in the fridge for a few months. The ones frm October are just now starting to sprout. I keep them in a baggie with H20. Ihave a frew trees that are 2-3- going on 4 years old now. I could graft them??..but It's more just for fun. I leave them in the fridge until I am ready to plant- inside, then I harden them off in the spring before I plant them outside.
