Think Spring! Seed Swaps and more for Feb 23 Tea Party

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hmmmm....anyone interested in: http://ncfarmsinc.com/store/index.php?cPath=65
I'm within the 500 mile delivery radius for them - they have a min of FOUR rooted trays. Thinking the hummers would love those fuchias!!

Hello Critter! I was playing around with the idea of attending. You just put the "done deal" stamp on it for me. Those blue poppies are georgeous! And I love the idea of the lavender ones, too. I want to come just on the off chance I could get some of those. And pots too! I don't think there is a source unturned around here, in my search for used pots. Count me in, Please!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

jsx,

White Marsh----Dundalk----Glen Burnie----looks like we all could carpool, but it is up to Sally who does the driving. What do you say, Sally? We all WILL pitch in for gas!

Gita

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita I would love to but I cannot... I have to take my daughter to dance class, meet my hubby with her, and then come over. I may be a few minutes late.. :(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Tiger! (She's the one I've been hinting about... I've been trying to nudge her into coming by plying her with offers of mint and seeds...) I'll make sure you get some poppies, although I don't have those blue ones.

If you put too many people into Sally's car, you will be leaving holding pots and seeds and leftover party treats in your laps! LOL

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

If Sally runs out of room she can throw her stuff in my car and I can drop it off at her house! :)

Someone said blue poppys were hard to grow.. True or False? I do not remember where I read that one.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Poppies like cooler or less humid weather, I think, especially those blue ones -- aren't they Himilayan (sp) or something? We don't have cool summers here, so they're a challenge.

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

Sounds like a good plan to me! LOL

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

I wish we were less humid that is for sure!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Chantell, I would be interested in those rooted trays. Would they ship them to you before Feb 23rd, is it too cold to ship yet? Or were you thinking of a mini-co-op where you would order and then send out the plants later?
I'm working on a seed list. I have morning glories, scarlet milkweed and a large bag of mixed poppy seeds. I'll put together a good list and post it. Did I see Hellebores ? I'd love Hellebores.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell, those plug trays are tempting! Unfortunately, the truck schedule shows that shipping to VA is the week *after* the swap, dagnabbit! Too bad, because Feb. plugs would grow to a nice size by Memorial Day.

They do have some nice goodies... the hibiscus, trailing Torenia, 'Tricolor' wandering jew...

My 'Tricolor' got underwatered when I was away, and some darker ones in the basket overgrew the pretty pink and cream ones... any chance somebody who got cuttings from me last year still has it going? If so, I'd love a few snips. It's on my "look for & replace" list. :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell: I'm interested in the plugs. And if you meet us for lunch -- maybe we put it back a day or 2 -- I can then get them to Critter and Wrightie; maybe other people could pick up from them?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I see a mini co-op in the works!

My favorite fuchsia is probably 'Trailing Dark Eyes', although 'Trailing Lena' comes close. I'd be up for a mixed flat if we could specify trailers, but I don't especially want uprights... well, I could probably be convinced... especially if anybody's looking at 'Blue Ballerina' or 'Winston Churchill'.

And if we order, please please we have to get 100 assorted Trailing Coleus cuttings. They can just be put in water... they'll keep that way for a week or two if the water is changed regularly, and then they can be potted up. Mine gradually petered out last year, and I miss them!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Or we could each buy a flat of a different rooted coleus, and then create assorted flats from those -- the more participants, the more variety . . . . . . .

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I was looking over the list and would go for Coleus, Impatiens, Fuchsia Lantana Hibscus Phlox and Ivy just to name a few.

Adamstown, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm interested -- particularly coleus, fushia (preferably trailing), ajuga, wandering jew, new guinea impatiens. . . .

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

OK, I just made a list of seeds will bring, most only one trade. Is there a limit on how old? many were packed for 2007, 2006. Can bring older than that, buyer ( trader) beware?
I would like to see who's the optimist with the oldest seed packet still holding seeds. I have a few oldies I can't seem to bring myself to toss.
I have more veg than flower..

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleus are so easy from cuttings... that's one where I think we should seriously consider paying $8 for cuttings rather than $33 or whatever for a flat... even if we got a double number of cuttings as insurance, I think we'd be ahead. Shari (Nutmegnana) lives near me, so I could take delivery of hers and up-pot her coleus cuttings.

The only wandering jew I'm interested in is Tricolor... I can probably provide cuttings of the purple, green, and green/white ones.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I don't have a problem with older seeds. Just don';t be offended if people turn them down, or offer to share them as "extras." As I recall from earlier swaps, I think there will be a lot of sharing rather than strict 1 for 1 trading going on, and everybody will go home happy. :-)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I'm interested in the coleus, impatiens and wandering jew, but I think I would have problems get up there to get them. I can just here the DH now......LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If a couple of us can get the trailing coleus established (or any of the coleus for that matter, but I'm especially keen on the trailing ones), everybody will get them eventually. They're really easy to start from cuttings, and they'll need to be pinched back down the road anyway. If they arrive in good shape, there may even be extras that can be shipped when rooted... I'm willing to do that, but I wouldn't want to promise before seeing them.

Adamstown, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleus are very easy to root. I cut some last fall, rooted them, potted them and now I'm cutting from those and rooting some more. Not trailing, though. . . .

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm game for almost ANY flat splitting, or for unrooted coleus (though I understand that the unrooted pieces can be really really tiny, so it isn't quite as easy as sticking a cutting in a cup of water). But you can count me in!

On the other hand, Chantell, are you still on board? I don't know where you are in Virginia, but we seem to be assuming you'll take the free delivery and then deliver to me, and I'll deliver further north. I wonder if I'm within the free delivery radius, to save you the hassle -- though one way or the other we'd have to meet up to exchange stuff.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Got any that would be pretty in my mom's redwood-stained planters? I tucked a couple that were green with redwood/rust tones in as accents last year with some polka dot plants, torenias, white impatiens, blue lobelia, and a few random trailers... nice, and she says she'd like the same this year, please! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Umm, nowhere does it say free delivery, unless you are ordering hundreds of trays... In fact, I saw $2.50 per flat on the truck deliver info page, and on reading that page again I think that might be only available if we order at least 30 flats. Which seems unlikely. http://ncfarmsinc.com/store/catalog/truck.pdf

We could call and ask about truck delivery of smaller orders to MD. I'm not sure why MD isn't listed on their truck delivery schedule... but if they pass through, they might be willing to stop by.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

If I read it right, the worst shipping fee we could be hit with is $3 a tray, which is less than 10% -- that doesn't seem so bad. But someone would have to agree to take them and redistribute them within the trays, which could be a big job. Good group project.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Assuming we can figure out why they don't list Maryland -- or one of you Virginia people is willing to take this on.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy, look at the left hand column on that chart... it's $3 per tray, where "# of trays" is 30-40.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Jenn, the Himalayan blue poppies (meconopsis) do not do well this far south, but several other varieties grow just fine, provided that you have the right conditions in your garden for the type that you want to grow. You might hop on over to the Poppy forum for more details...

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Wrightie

I have been peeking everywhere. I think google is working overtime for me... I really like this forums.. the others I lurk. Some of the people are interesting....

I will add poppy to lurk in.. :) thank you

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

btw, Pepsi-Man finally called me back yesterday and said that I could come tomorrow to pick up the barrels. Sheesh!

Any idea how many of those barrels might fit into a standard Accord or similar car?

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Maybe a big one in the backseat and a little one in the front.

they are HUGE

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

They have different sizes? He only mentioned a 50 gal. size. I actually have a small SUV, but was trying to gauge how many to expect.

LOL, I only hope that they don't say Pepsi on them ... but I have a feeling that they will be a loud red color.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Jenn said the one she has for me is white. I am hoping I have enough Krylon plastic paint to turn it a nicer color... I think I picked up some bronze or something like that on sale at Ollie's for a couple bucks a can...

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

White -- oi vei -- in that case, I'll be picking up some paint as well!

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

They are white and they have left over pepsi in them.. :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

plant food!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hooray, I made it out of the house for quick run to WalMart tonight! (DH drove, and I zipped around in one of the electric carts... I was pooped in about 20 minutes, but it was still good to get out and find some things that I knew DH had no chance of locating for me there.) I got *eight* packs of seed baggies and some bubble envelopes, so I am set! (If anybody picked up half a dozen packs for me in the meanwhile, I'll still be happy to take them off your hands... I really do go through them!) Bought a new bag of thistle seed, too, so hopefully we'll have finches at the window to entertain us. :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill: I'm so glad you're getting your stamina back!!! (Sad that I missed the 30 tray minimum . . ..)
