Sorry I didn't see how fast that last vol. went.

How are all the birds adapting to the Sky Cafe, Pelle?

Marlton, NJ

Good, all the small birds are coming to it along with the Cardinals and an occasional Starling of course.

Marlton, NJ

Would anyone like to recommend their "caged" suet feeders?

My Hawks must have taken a day trip and a huge flock of European Starlings has been devouring all the suet I have out.

Thanks!

Lawrenceville, GA

Pelle... I don't like those caged feeders of any sort. This photo is why... I don't want squirrels eating the stuff I put out for birds, I'd rather have them eat what I put out for them... but I'd much rather have a squirrel munch away at feed than come home from work and find a squirrel dead having been trapped in one of these feeders.
I know the starlings are a different story, but this is what happened when I tried one of those "cage" type feeders. It was horrific.
I got rid of both the caged feeders I had... the one for seed and the suet one. I just put bafflers over everything... of course I understand that won't help with your starling issue, but I know you well enough to know you'd feel horrible if a squirrel suffered this same fate in your yard.
My mom's been battling those stupid starlings at her house in Missouri... I don't have them, thank goodness. The cowbirds and the housefinch.... that's what's been eating me out of house and home!

Oh thats awful ! Sorry that happened Judy!

Lawrenceville, GA

I actually replaced it with a roller suet feeder... I had a roller seed feeder that I really liked so I tried the roller suet one. I like it. It keeps bigger birds and squirrels at bay.

Marlton, NJ

It looks large inside.

How many cakes of suet do you put in?

Lawrenceville, GA

You can get two suet cakes in there at a time.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

oooo, I was considering a caged feeder too, but not now. That would be awful and I would feel sooo guilty.

Marlton, NJ

Judy, Does it help w/ Starlings?

Lawrenceville, GA

Pelle.. I honestly don't have starlings or grackles or anything of that sort here... I do get blackbirds/crows and they are too heavy for it, though, so I'd think starlings would be too.
The Web site specifically mentions it being starling-proof.
You MIGHT call the company tell them specifically you are trying to combat starlings and will want to return it if it doesn't work and see how they respond.
I don't want to tell you it'll work without knowing. I know it pitches squirrels off!

Yes, Nanny... it was awful. I'd have tried to get him out of there had I been home, even if he'd have tried to bite me, but by the time I got home it was too late.. Like I said, it aggravates me when I look out and see squirrels chowing down on expensive birdseed, but seeing that was a whole lot worse.

Good idea.

Starlings aren't as big as Grackles so it might be a challenge.

Thanks Judy!

Made this peanut feeder a few days ago, chose the wrong wire, the hole were too big, so I inserted another layer inside of it. I couldn't find the type you guys had, in stores around here.

hmm, i have 3 of those big round caged feeders just like yours, judy, and several different caged suet feeders, too. plus several other caged tube feeders ~ i have them so i won't be feeding those awful nw crows! they tried picking them apart, breaking into them like they did the previous feeders i had but these feeders are good! they've given up trying to get to the feed, and they leave them alone now.

Looks good to me burn!

Nice pic ritapg!

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

Burn, how about uploading the blueprint? Is that a slab of wood in the pic also? Is it for suet?

Marlton, NJ

Okay this caged suet feeder is on a baffled pole system so no squirrels get hurt.

Just bought this today; it holds 2 suet cakes.

The flocks of European Starlings were devouring all my suet so it was time to do something.

Judy, Hopefully in the future I'll be able to get that roller suet feeder. :-)

Hey people, I have tried all kinds of suet feeders and had all these problems until a few years ago, I found an upsidedown feeder that holds two cakes. End of problems. BEV It is 16 degrees yippee!!!

Marlton, NJ

Glad you like it Bev!

The Starlings had my Upside Down Suet feeder beat in under 2 hours.

LOL. I guess you like cold weather? :-)

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

No I do not like cold weather or hot but we have them both. I want spring!!!! Bev

Marlton, NJ

Pelle

Pray for moisture for central Illinois. We need it bad. Thanks BEV

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

We got two inches of snow but the ground was above freezing so it all melted as soon as it fell.

I have a caged feeder for the finches -- I had trouble getting them to the feeder until I decided to cut a couple of bigger windows out of it. Now they get in fine -- so do the squirrels but not as often as before. The squirrel used to dump a feeder in a very short period of time.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Here is a heated waterer that I added an inexpensive water pump, rocks and a brick that had a hole in it. I wanted one like jo11 has and this is the best I could come up with. The finches use it all day and I can relax about the water freezing up during our cold temps.

I shot this pic thru the window!

a jigsaw
a pair of cutting plier
a pair of needlenose plier

Thank you Burn. People like you make this forum so outstanding.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Well thanks guys. It was really simple to do. But that peanut feeder is lacking it's bottom. I received a visitors when I was posting this and had to stop my posting. Sorry about that.
My last step was to insert the 3" piece of wood in the bottom and staple in place Voila!!!
Finished peanut feeder.

LOL I think we figued out what the piece of wood was for but thanks for finishing the directions. Do you think 1/4 inch hardware cloth would do okay?
