LOL Debilu!

This Northern Mockingbird visited the feeding table to have a drink of water from the new "fountain"!!

Had to take the pic thru the window and no sun so I hope it doesn't hurt your eyes!

Rose, I really love your new waterer/fountain and apparently, so do the birds ;-)

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thank you Sadie! I'm going to rig one up for the ground feeders as well! It is so frustrating to think of all the birds that can't get water when the temps get below freezing. I honestly think the reason the Cedar Waxing visited yesterday is because of the bubbling water...of course my imagination does tend to run on lately! LOL! But...I also had a White Throated Sparrow visit the table today and I've only seen them on the ground in the past!

I'll have to figure out a way to unplug the lights and radio in the DH's shop, that's the closest electric I have to my feeding area and if I turn on the shop electric, to use the outlet, EVERYTHING comes on :-(
I've really been wanting a heated bird bath/water source, it's impossible to keep the water unfrozen with these temps. I can dump the ice and put in fresh and it's refrozen within the hour, especially if the wind is blowing too...even though I've positioned them in full sun. Even if he doesn't want me to leave it on during the week, maybe I can at least set it up for weekend use. He doesn't really like leaving stuff like that plugged up when we're gone all day.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I wish you did have a way to use a heated waterer. I thought about a solar one but sunlight is so scarce this time of the year I don't know if it would generate enuf heat. Luckily we have an outlet on the patio and I can use it 24/7. I just had a "fleeting think"...maybe you could get one of those plug in outlets you screw into lightbulb sockets. If you could use for instance a covered porch light socket and an outdoor extension cord that may work. Just a thought.... :0)

I have to tell you that I just had some Bluebirds show up to use the heated waterer!! My goodness I'm as pumped as a teenager!!! I have to check out the pics...no sun today but hopefully will have some to share later. They went from the heater waterer to another unheated waterer I have just because.

Good luck Sybil...I know it is frustrating to think about the birds not having water!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Congrats on the Bluebirds, how cool, I'd be pumped too!! I haven't seen ours lately, I really need to get my meal worm feeder put out before the worms die.

Hopefully I can figure out a solution to the water situation.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Sadie...I just ordered 10,000 worms and hope DH will make me a feeder!

Lawrenceville, GA

Dellrose.... I just put mealworms in a heavy dish and set it on the patio table... the bluebirds don't seem to mind!
I ordered 5,000 mealworms and thought I had a lot... 10,000.... WOWZA!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Judy...I think I may be excited about the Bluebirds that showed up today!! I know I get carried away but the $ seemed so cheap compared to what you get in the stores. Do you have trouble with the Starlings eating the mealworms? That is the main reason I wanted DH to make the cages feeder! Those starlings ate all the fruit and suet again....uggggggg!! They are fat pigs!! By the time the BB showed up there wasn't anything left for them!!

Lawrenceville, GA

fortunately, I don't have starlings... the only "pest" bird I'm getting right now is house finch... I battled cowbirds for a while but those cleared out.
I know what you mean about the cost of mealies... I was paying $11 for what they were passing off as 1,000 at a bird seed store and got 5,000 (although I know there's more than that in there) for $26 total after a 10 percent discount for feeding bluebirds and priority shipping. Makes a lot of difference to the ole pocketbook at the rate I feed birds mealworms!
I'll see if I can find anything about whether starlings eat mealies and post what I find...

Lawrenceville, GA

Well, since there are such things as "starling proof mealworm feeders"....
http://www.tmbstudios.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BBNDMWF

I dare say starlings will eat mealworms.
Don't kill the messenger!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Hi Judy! Yes...the darned Starlings will definitely eat them! That feeder on the website is the one that DH can make for me...he is really handy that way and will help pay for some of the worms. Thanks for the info I really appreciate you and all the helpful people on this forum!

Update on the blue waterer!! I just saw a Carolina Wren drinking from it...too slow with the camera but there is always tomorrow!! I am too pumped for an old lady! LOL!

Dang starlings show up at my house around Feb. and I have to stop feeding because they clean out all the feeders in a day! Can't start feeding again 'til late April or early May. They are the beggars of the bird world! They think it's a soup kitchen!

Lawrenceville, GA

You know, when I was googling stuff on starlings while ago I came across Web sites devoted to making PETS out of the stupid things? Are people on crack?

Marlton, NJ

I used to see that about Crows and teaching them to talk. It wouldn't surprise me if Crows could learn to talk but stil....

This is what our poor birds had to contend with saturday.
The wind was brutal!

HaHa, good stuff Judy!

Pelle, I've heard that crows are capable of speaking clearer than parrots and maccaws with a bigger vocabulary. I've heard that they are the smartest bird on earth.

Nanny, I feel your pain! The wind blows like crazy at my hilltop house too! I cant wait til my trees get bigger so they'll break up that wind.

Some girls want diamonds and shoes... all I wanted for Christmas was a new feeder!!!
And here it is my nice No-No feeder I got as a gift from my daughter! GM

Nanny...we get some nasty wind here too and I feel so sorry for the birdies. I now have bird feeders all around the yard so there is usually an area they can eat and be protected! That wind is a real challenge...I'll bet the grounnd feeders are happy though!

Grandmaggie...I have one of those feeders also and the birds just love it and is covered with birds all the time. I like that it is so easy to clean and fill! I also get bird related things for gifts now..books, feeders and birdhouses. Everyone is glad that they know what to buy me and I'm thrilled as well!

Good for you GM!

I've been catching up. Great pics everyone.

Rose - I really like your heated waterer. We could sure use one here. Unusually cold temps lately and barely got above freezing.

Burn - great peanut feeder. I may attempt that one, thanks.

Thank you, Dacula... now I feel better at my guess that I'm having frequent warblers at my yard in Lawrenceville!

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi Judy. I've only seen them recently. The last 3 weeks or so. Both pine warblers and yellow-rumped warblers. I saw 2 pine warblers together at the suet today. One was lighter in color, so I think maybe a female. Didn't get to the camera quick enough though. The yellow-rumped ones are very skittish. One will fly up and land on a stick, but then fly away without eating if there's any movement near by. Becky

Very nice shots Becky!

Nice pics Beclu! What is that little tray you have at the bottom of your suet feeder?

Thanks,
Rose

Thanks Pelle & Rose

Rose - DH didn't like all the suet falling on his deck so he rigged up a tray under the feeder using old coat hangers and a frozen food tray. There's one on both my suet feeders now, even the one over dirt!. The smaller birds sit or perch on it and eat the "leftovers." They still need tweeking to stay on straight though.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Neat pic Nanny! Never seen a RBN in our area!

Thaanks Becky...I like that idea!

For a little over two bucks I constructed this mealy station.. I feed Mocker from a couple other places, but the tiny birds have their own stash now.

Bewick slips right through all the holes easily, though I did make other entrances at the bottom of each end.

One more.... Not such a clear pic advantage when they are inside, but at lease the tiny birds will get their mealies!

Good work Deb! Do you find mealworms in your own dirt? What bug does a mealworm become?
