I know the starlings are a different story, but this is what happened when I tried one of those "cage" type feeders. It was horrific.
I got rid of both the caged feeders I had... the one for seed and the suet one. I just put bafflers over everything... of course I understand that won't help with your starling issue, but I know you well enough to know you'd feel horrible if a squirrel suffered this same fate in your yard.
My mom's been battling those stupid starlings at her house in Missouri... I don't have them, thank goodness. The cowbirds and the housefinch.... that's what's been eating me out of house and home!
