Since my backyard is shaded over, although I have found some shade loving varieties for things like carrots and rhubarb, I enjoy home-grown tomatoes. So, since I will have to start a container garden on my patio to make it work, I just need an estimate of how much soil a full grown, regularly sized tomato plant would require to make sure my pots will be a sufficient size.
Soil Amount
I'm pretty sure you don't want to do a tomato plant in anything much less than about a 5-gallon bucket.
How about cherry tomatoes? I know I should have asked this before, but I am also growing cherry tomatoes.
Hi Bordo, I have to grow all my tomato plants in pots due to my short season, and the final sizes pots I use both for full sized tomatoes and the lovely sweat ones are a 12 inch pot, but you move the plants up a pot or two as they need it, dont add the tiny plants into too big a pot or they will take a step back as they want to fill the pots with roots instead of greenery and flowers, you may have to be constantly pinching out the little side shoots that grow between the leaf and stem as too many of those will cause less flowers and fruit to appear, and you must also be really good at watering and feeding, I find the best feed for my pot tomatoes has a seaweed extract added to it, it is a natural plant food and helps flowers and fruit. good luck, hope you get a good crop. Weenel.
