Best/ worse/ ? did you learn today #28visit with friends...

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

It's so funny Betty cause I never was threatened like that and I wouldn't be, she can have him if she'll keep him...lol...it just never was my thing to pick up scraps so I don't get the whole buzzard deal. I always imported my men but I guess she got the ones that stuck around awhile...weird that not a boyfriend came out of it for her though

Just weird to hear about this stuff over 10 years later....what sneaking! lol

I feel bad for gossiping, she's my friend and I totally love her..it's just weird

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

OK Sweet Friends,
First, my boys aren't due till tomorrow morning, so I have time to do this now. I'll talk about the swap thing we are thinking of doing first then I will come back with some things I would like to say to Gita the Multitalented Wonder Woman who continually cheers us up and surprises us no matter what is going on.

OK...here are my thoughts on the "Swap" for only those who are on the thread. If anybody joins in and becomes a regular, we will include her on the next swap. Nobody will be left out.

Using Betty's mileage list, I count 15 regulars to our thread. Fifteen of us who worry and think about each other on a daily basis. So let's keep that number in mind while we decide what we want to do.

How about a Secret Pal group? With Secret Pals, a group puts names of those who want to participate in the pot. They decide how long the Pals will be secret, and decide on the beginning and ending date. Then names are paired. Here are my thoughts:

1. Start with now till the end of February....that will be almost 6 weeks. So when we match up names, you will be secret pals for only that length of time. Thereafter, we will draw names on the last day of February to be new Pals for the months of March and April, and on through the year. You will have your secret pal for only 2 months, and at the end of 2 months you will have a new one.

2. During that two months that you have your secret pal, there might not be a special occasion, but you will do something special for her at least twice. You could send her a card in January and make her something Valentiney for February or like Ruby said, buy something very inexpensive for her.....BUT ONLY TWICE IN THE 2 MONTH PERIOD. And I think no matter what you do or get, stay within a $5.00 limit total. This means that you will send 2 thoughtful thingies to your pal, and you will receive 2 thoughtful thingies from your secret pal. Betty and Laura will have extra postage, as will those who mail to them, so we need to think about that. We don't want anyone to feel obligated or to have a cash flow problem. And if you need to stay out for a couple of months, then that's ok too, and if anybody gets sick or can't participate....let's agree up front that it's OK. We are too close to each other to ever let hard feelings come between us.

3. Since we have an uneven number, and since I have a lot of spare time and since I don't sleep very well, I will volunteer to be the one to sort of start us off and I won't be in the pot with the other names. but I will coordinate the pairing of names and I will keep a list of addresses and special dates so that when I send you the name you get for the 2 months, you will also get all the necessary info about that person, including address. We can do all that through Dmail. Also, if anybody has to drop out for any reason, I can pick up the slack. I don't mind doing this, really, it will be fun for me, too.

4. We will try this for awhile and if it is fun and if everybody likes it, then we will continue for as long as we want....but it is all up to you. It just seemed to me that it would be more fun to have a game like this with people we know than with people we don't know. So why not??

Here are some things that you could tell me through Dmail so that when you draw your name, I could send that info also via Dmail to the person along with your name. I have all kinds of methods for choosing partners....like alphabetical order....who gave me the info first, etc....and since you won't know for sure, then nobody else will know either. Don't put your return address or your names on your mailings, though, unless you mail from out of town...simply because it will be a dead givaway. I am fortunate that I live within 20 miles of 3 different states. Or you can send it to someone else to mail for you from another area.

OK, before I give you a list, tell me what you think about all this, and if you agree we can start it on Monday.
Let me know.....and also let me know if you want to participate....

I'll be back in a minute, Gita.....gotta get something to drink. You and I need to really seriously talk, darlin!!!

Hello everyone. It's going to be COLD tonight! Everyone stay in and stay warm!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Oh dear god, Gita.....how could you have kept so quiet.
I have to tell you right up front, I love the steps to Jerusalem one best.
It is so full of emotion and so full of color/light contrast. It is a beautiful piece of work.

Don't ever apologize when you get your inspiration from a photograph, that is how we learn. I have never seen a real live elephant. When I paint one, I absolutely have to look at a photo or I could not do it. Same with a lot of other things. So do not ever apologize. We all learn in different ways.

When I taught my students to paint, I always encouraged them to gather all the "inspirations" they needed for that painting. I would teach them the technique....like dry brush or wash or mixed media, then they could use the technique that they had learned and create their own masterpiece by also applying that technique to the inspirations they were "copying". So if you used a photo of Jerusalem, and you painted it, you used your own painting technique on your inspiration, which was the photo. See what I mean? You made it yours, it is no longer a photograph in National Geographic, it is a painting on your wall.
On the other hand, if you fotocopied the NG photograph and enlarged it, then signed your name to it and sold it as your own for a gazillion dollars, that would be a NO NO.....because the only original thing on it would be your signature.

I always encourage students/friends to paint from within....and always do exercises so that they can see what I am talking about. Some can and some can't, and it really doesn't matter. Painting from within yourself means you have to get that inspiration from your heart and soul, and that isn't easy to do. It is great if you can, and good teachers can use a lot of different methods to teach you to do it. It takes a while to learn and it isn't easy.

I would not change a thing about any of your paintings, Gita, they are wonderful and beautiful and well done. I am the worlds biggest art critic and I don't ever tiptoe around anything. So when I tell you it is excellent, it IS excellent I would be more than proud to hang your work in any gallery that I have ever been involved with. And I would gladly have a one woman show for you in the gallery that I now have. You are that good. If you weren't, I would have simply said: "good work, Gitagal... thanks for sharing."

We have so much talent among us. Look at Starzz's gardens.....I am not even going to talk about Betty's amazing stuff. I got some Christmas gifts that I am so proud to have from some of you....beautiful little things....and yes, my angel made from a shell will stay on her special spot on the bookcase, as will the lovely painted little round ornament.....so will all the other things that you have sent me.

I was thinking last night when I was rearranging this room and painting on the 6'x4' commissioned piece that is driving me nuts....I was thinking that it would be fun to have a gathering and for each of us to bring one thing we had made....or had grown, our very favorite thing...I couldn't decide if I would bring a beautiful burgandy daylily or my painting of one, which most of you have seen. But we all would have something to show. Maybe simply photography....I have seen some wonderful shots of your little fuzzy buddies, and some terrific shots of your landscapes and your blooms. And GG's quilts.....so beautiful.
Seed's picture collages....so many things you do and share.

Ok, sorry...my posts have become too long. Could be that I haven't gotten out much this week, ya think??

Let me know what you think of the Secret Pals thing....I think it will be fun, but if you don't want to be involved, or if you want to do it another way, please feel free to say so.....You have put up with my words too many times this week....now it is your turn.

Gita, I am copying your art work into my Gita file. I hope you don't mind. I have a Betty file, too...also a GG one.....oops, I didn't ask their permission, did I? Please?
Hugs,
Sharon

I just went back up and read the threads and looked at pictures. Gorgeous paintings Gita. All the talent in this group make me feel so inadequate! :-) I love the wolves. Have a thing for wolves.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Gita- You are an amazing artist! All of your painting are gorgeous, I couldn't pick a favorite.

Betty hope you are getting some much needed rest.

Loved seeing everyones fur baby pictures. Tonight we went to WalMart and got Scrappy a crate to sleep in at night (he has been pottying alot at night) so going to try this out. While we where there Carl saw a Kitty Tower and figured that our girls would love it, which Cleo does. I have attached a picture.

Morning! Count me in.

Cold cold cold

Gita beautiful pictures. Please start painting again. I also don't have the imagination to come up with my own ideas but I can take something else and change it. Then it feels more like mine.

Well I'm going to go and check the stove. Need more heat!

(Cathy), MO

I love the secret swap idea too. Wasn't sure if I was included

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Shar, and everyone else,

Thank you so much for all your kind words re the paintings. I guess I must have done about 30 or 35 total back then. Not a one since!
I used to decide to do one for a particular friend, family person or whomever, and then I would slave away. I know I did one for a couple we were great friends with of an old tower in the old capital of Estonia--those big, fat, stone towers that were look-outs and were spaced around all the high walls that surrounded the medieval "Old Cities". Well, I spent the whole 10 weeks on that one painting. Just could not get the stone to look right. Then I gave it away as a gift to them.

Seems, in my life, there have been "times" when I did what I did--and then I never did it again. And so it was with the painting. I don't think I would ever have the discipline to sit down nowadays and do something like that, but if I signed up for a class, and paid my money, then that would be the reason to continue. I also think that a lot of my (then) joy of living in no longer in my life. Not all that fulfilling stuff anymore.

You won't believe this, but 30-some years later, I still have about 3 of my paintings in a box in my basement. Never framed them....One I really like too--a Lighthouse with its beam shining through the fog--waves crashing on the rocks around it. It is all in blues. See! My Ex used to make all the frames. I still have long strips of framing material downstairs in the rafters, but I do not have the skills to cut and compose and make a good frame ot matting and do not have the funds to go pay for having it done.

Our teacher was an eccentric older lady named Naomi Horn. She was very good at pointing things out to us, teaching us tecniques ans always, always gave us posotive feedback. Now and then she also arranged for our artworks to be displayed somewhere---like a Bank or something.

One funny story...and she did this a lot.
Once she came over to me as I had asked her a question about painting my sky on the picture i was doing. Well--she sat down, took the brush and started painting on MY painting, while I fidgeted nearby. I really did not want her painting on MY painting--I was just asking for advice....
So, after a while she got up and went on her way to attend to someone else. Later on, she came back my way and said: "I LOVE what you did with that sky!!!". Forgetful? Distracted? Yup! That's what she was, but I felt that now a part of this painting was no longer MINE!

I still have my big case that all my oil paints are in. My Ex made that for me too. Question, Shar. How long are oils good for??? The only way I can see myself getting back to it is if I decide to join a class somewhere--like maybe a Senior Center. I used to have a box-full of pictures that i had saved to maybe paint. had loaned them to my Aunt, who was painting in her senior years, and when she died, thje kids went through her house and just got rid of everything--MY pictures too!

Meanwhile, I do this and that as needed--NO painting, but I do draw sometimes--or I make something--it all just comes so easy to me. That is why I am so into all this craft stuff-just don't have the discipline to actually set aside time to do it on a regular basis. What I need is a REASON!!! I don't know HOW Betty does it!!!

I have also been doing Face-Painting at a local Nursery's Fall Festival for about 16 years. Mt G-Friend and I only charge $2 per, as it is a Community thing. This Festival ended last Fall. See! I should actively seek places to do this--like kids B-Day parties, but I don't feel like doing that. It is hard--and noisy kids annoy me nowadays.

Shar--You are like me in that you "say it as it is". I appreciate that in a person, as it is much less time-consuming than "beating around the bush". It HAS gotten me in a lot of trouble throughout my life, though. I seem to have a short-circuit between my brain and my mouth. Some people like that--some get offended. So, you just go ahead! I like it!

I would love to show you my other paintings, but they are all 3x5 prints in my "Brag Book". You should see my 3'x2' picture of a Snow Leopard lazing on a snowy cliff!!! That is another one of my masterpieces. Not sure how good a scanned print will translate into a picture in My Documents si I could attach it here. I guess the only way to find out is to try it. Can't leave your "Gita File" half-empty!

Your "secret pal" thing seems fun. You may include me. Do you need some basic interests of ours or such to pass on to our "Pal" you choose? No Names???? NO return addy?

OK! Time to get some breakfast.

Thank you all again--Gita

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Hi everyone. I understand about having interest in something and doing it all the time and one day just moving on to some other thing. I guess trying to garden in this area has been such a chore it has consumed me and all my interest and resources and extra time goes into that, which is how I got here.

I have signed up for classes that end in Mid or early May. grrrr.

Ruby I like your posts over there. Don't mistake Summer, she thought you meant someone there was being judgemental over the thread and she was trying to say, We had those people there and we chased them away. lol Don't be put off in case you were.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

btw I am going to the Vet with my other dog that lives with my X. Pray for me, I am numb so maybe someone is already praying for us. DD is coming with.

Liz the dogs look like totally different breeds. Funny. Wire haired Jack Russels still look like a Jack Russel but yours don't. funny!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Well Gita..your paintings are incredible. When I first started reading this morning and saw the set of four flower paintings... I actually let out an loud Ohhh..no one here..just me..I laughed to myself.
Then it just got better..and I love the Jeruselem one too...and the face on the wolf closest to the bottom..man ..what a gift you have!

Judy..another grin I had to myself..my late husband had cockatiel..he brought it here with him when we got together..bird died about a year later...have no idea why.So yes..I should just stick to plants and pictures LOL

So Sharon..interesting idea you have about a Secret Pal exchange.. ..not exactly clear on how it works..but I would like to give it a try. I'll re-read your instructions.

Betty..I do hope you will show us your wolf on suede ....

Sharon..thanks for the nice comment on my gardens..I feel like I don't really have an artistic talent like all of you....but I can take some nice photos and am proud of my rustic Secret Garden.

Well I have some errands to do..talk later..

Cheers,
Carol

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Gita you do have a reason now, to show your DG buddies! You could commission your artwork and make some extra $$. Or enter them in contests, local fair etc.

Well have to go grocery shopping and run errands. Chat later. Rachel

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I am back. My Mushi is with me, she did tests and will let me know Monday. Greg got mad and left in a huff when I told him Mushi was coming home with me. he lost 21-24 lbs. He is going to have his last days as happy as we can make it for him and Greg has no say in the matter, he knew it when he met me and how dare he ask me to turn my back on him while he is sick and old. I LOVE HIM, IF HE LOVES ME HE BETTER GET ON BOARD. He loves the other two and spoils them rotten. Thanks for praying if anyone did.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

morning all

doing some scrap booking today and my sons are coming over to do some gaming with their step dad.. its nice.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Laura,
So glad you and your GD had a fun time yesterday..and another day of happy family time..you sound content.

Oh Dawn..I am sorry..hope Greg settles down and accepts Mushi..if he loves the other two..well how could he not care about Mushi..probably just needs a little time to get used to it. Is it maybe the expense of the Vet bills and so on?

Rachel..I just clicked on your garden Diary..I am very impressed with all the plants you have and also how you have kept a very good record of them. I have a few of the same daylilies you do.

Cheers,
Carol

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hey! All this painting and such is part of my PAST life! Commission what? I do not have but the few I showed you, and even when i was painting, I could NEVER sell one, as it would have been like I was selling a piece of my Soul--an arm or a leg! Giving one away was different.
How can one put a price on something one has created and sweated over making???? Every line, every stroke, every blob of color was MINE! To put a $$ value on it would have killed me....made it almost worthless.....

I suppose it is different if you do this for a living. You already know from the beginning it will never be YOURS--but you will have a couple of 100$$$ to show for it.
This kind of thinking really confuses me! I guess I WANT my 2 daughters to WANT all this stuff I have created. If I bring it up, they say--well, yeah! I DO want it--just not right now! That minimizes the whole idea of passing something on. If they only knew how they will feel about everything that belonged to their parent when we are gone! I know it--because I know how I cherish the few things I have from my Mom. They do not know that yet---and I cannot make them realize it now.

I have a philosophy about giving vs selling that I adhere to. If I spend days making something special, just for you as a favor--a gift from my heart--it is priceless! If I give you the same thing and you want to give me $10 or $20 for it--you have now reduced my "labor of love" to the value of $10. Nothing "priceless" about it now! All my efforts are now worth--$10......Does this make sense to anyone?

SO! In my heart--all these people that now own one of my paintings, given them from the heart, will (hopefully) cherish them for as long as they live. It was a sign of friendship--NOT a transaction!

I know times have changed and, even I, want to "modernize" my living areas. Those paintings I have just don't seem to "fit" any more. Yet, I will never get rid of them. Same goes for my HUGE macramé wall hanging that I made to match my sofa. It is a true work of art--but it is in all the 80's colors of browns and beiges and oranges. Besides--WHO still hangs macramé on their walls? I have NO other wall anywhere where this would fit as it is about 7' long and 5' up and down. I slaved on that thing for 3 months! My husband paid $80 (in the 80's) for a strip of Brazilian Rosewood and cut a longitudinal groove in it where this whole wall hanging was knotted to and started from.

Sometimes the Past is just the Past! That's why all the antique dealers are staying in business. Every younger generation just gets rid of what no longer suits THEIR life styles.....and someone else makes mega-bucks off of it! They will never know what they have lost.....

Whew! Thanks for listening! I really get emotional about some things......I think in the long run--I just want to stay "immortal" in the minds of all those people that have passed through my life. You guys are getting more and more special to me and I am getting more and more comfortable sharing things with you all. Thanks.

Gita

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Well said Gita!
Makes very good sense to me..you do have a way with words..beautiful. I could almost feel your emotions coming through as I read your words..
and then came the Whew..and I said whew too..yes..and the last part about being "Immortal" made me think about this old sign I bought at an antique barn..it is sort of a cross stich type of thing. it says "Remember me" It is hanging on the rec room wall behind the TV in this picture.

Well hello there you 'gabby' people..just got in and none too soon...when I left this morning the plow had come..I shovelled some, left and it was quite stormy..got 1/2 way and weather was beautiful, even sunshine..all day I kept looking out and thought thank goodness, no snow...

Got 1/2 way again and talk about a blizzard, couldn't even see the road..took my time and even pulled off on different roads so that I would feel I had to drive more at a higher speed..know from the snowbanks that it was plowed again, the area I did by hand now has another foot of snow, so while dressed I'm out to do some work..AND, I knew I'd not like my painting, which I don't...don't think pencil crayons are for me..infact, I laughed, did what she said and felt all our little wolves looked like chimpanzee's...and mine does...oh well, was a learning experience and perhaps painting flowers etc. it might be just the thing..

Can't say I didn't try...Lord hates a coward...

Will gab later this evening..

Everyone thinks I'm totally nuts, but I love snow. I wish we could get one big one before winter is over. Send some of it this way Betty!

Victoria Harbour, ON

No laughing, didn't get a frame for this but put it in one that I have for another oil piece...yuk

Giving it to my cousin Doug same guy as I gave the eagle..he like anything just because I personally made it for him...lol..no so sure he'll hand this one...

Cat..would be easier for you to come and spend a week here..I'm sure you'd have your fill...it's beautiful to look at just not the best for travelling..makes me want to retire..if I can get through the next 8 weeks or so, I'll enjoy the windows down, tunes playing and pocket full of money...lol

(Cathy), MO

LOL. I know. If I had it all the time, I'd probably be sick of it too! We don't normally get too many big snows here anymore. A few little "skiffs" of maybe an inch, sometimes 2. I would be satisfied (I think!) with one good snow a winter. At least 6 inches and preferably on a Fri night so I don't have to go to work the next day! Don't want much, do I?

Victoria Harbour, ON

You sure don't....measured the snow that fell since this morning as I cleaned of the railing of the deck..14"..that's a lot..especially when it's the fluffy/fluffy kind because if the wind comes up as it was yesterday..watch out..little early to hope for a snow day Monday...but I'm cozy in the house..nowhere to go tomorrow..playing with my stained glass now but soon will give it up..I've about 12 pieces to finish cutting and then solder..so am getting anxious...
Crazy me..you'd think I could just sit and relax but guess for me this is relaxation..

(Cathy), MO

I haven't got alot done today. Repotted a few plants, laundry, normal house stuff. The only time I stuck my nose outside the door was to feed the cats.

Hey do any of you ladies on here make birdhouses? Seems like everyone in here has talent but me! LOL. I started a hummingbird/butterfly seed swap with an extra hummer or bird house swap. You are all welcome to join in.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Betty..
Thanks for showing us your new project..I kept looking at it..and thought the large wolf was fabulous..but there is something about the little one that seems a bit off..around the ear and back of the head. Just my honest thought about it..I'm no expert on wolves though LOL
But there must be something that isn't sitting right with you too.
Also maybe it is the big contrast in colour of the wolves..what did the other ladies think about their project when done?
Anyway..I am in awe of your talent for drawing and painting.

What a lot of snow....what a struggle to drive through the storm..and not be happy with your drawing...ah well..you can mark that one off your list of crafts to do.

Can't wait to see your stained glass project for Paul.

Cheers,
Carol
