What do you miss most in the winter?

Hydrangeas...
These are a some of the flowering marvels that I enjoy on my slice of earth.
Most are asleep now, and as much as I miss them, I know they need their beauty rest in order to put on another spectacular show this year.
But patience eludes me: I am jonesin' for the Osmanthus & Daphne to begin their fragrant Siren's call.

Why does time in winter seem to slow down, while time in summer races?

I look forward to seeing the pear/apple trees break bud, new foliage on the Japanese maples & the Mason Bee houses empty for their Springtime labour.
Everything else follows...

Katye, those are lovely photos! I agree about the lilies..there are never enough! That Geum..is it Mango? I love it!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

geum not a mango... I had started a few of these from seed... transplanted them in the garden and they didn't come back after winter... not sure what went wrong... but they were beautiful

al - I miss everything!! I love being able to get outside without bundling up in heavy clothes and struggling to get Colin into the same. Yesterday i could hve been arrested for child abuse - we out in the morning to do some errands and he took his boots and mittens off every chance he got. In Home Depot his boots ended up in the cart (I kept them off and just carried him to the car). On the way home his socks came off so i made him walk to the door barefoot - we were inside the garage - all the way saying this is why you are supposed to wear boots. He didn't understand a thing. In fact he enjoyed it!!
Sue - I was a sports widow first and he probably hasn't noticed that I'm out in the garden all of the time. LOL He is too busy sleeping in front of a game (seems to know what is going on though?), watching a live game with his buddies, or refereeing a game!! Eleanor

I thought the Geum was this one:

Lovely flowers Katye - I never heard of Bleeding Hearts being called Flower Purses - so cute! I especially love your Solomon's Seals!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great shots, Katye! Love that blue on the Ceonothus.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Kayte, you pictures are lovely. The Solomons Seal is displayed so well. Do you have any shots of your gardens in spring or summer? Full shots, not individual plants. I would love to see those.

And which siberian iris is that?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And which hydrangea is that? I have Osmanthus - not as fragrant as I had hoped, but it's evergreen with a nice open structure. I have Daphne 'Carol Mackie'. It's new so it hasn't bloomed yet.

Geum 'Mango Lassi' indeed. She's a beauty & a performer as well. There are other Geums that are bi-tonal, but not readily available in the US.

Dicentra - a special young visitor dubbed the Dicentra "Flower Purses". We agreed that it was an appropriate name, as they would be a suitable size for Garden Faeries. When she spotted the pre-bloom Papaver somnif. buds, they were deemed "overnight bags".

S. Iris: 'Butter & Sugar'. Love it - floral sunshine. I have decided to go the route of the JI's and the SI's - they do well here & my soil is too rich for the germanicas. But I really like them all. A lot...

The Hydrangea is a paniculata called 'PeeWee' - it's about 7 - 8 years old, and grown as a standard. It looked so pathetic the first few years - the trunk was like a stork leg. But it has matured & is huge, or perhaps my expectations were for less height.

As far as Osmanthus goes, I have many delavayi and burkwoodii. These are uber fragrant - you can smell them 50 - 75' away. I thought they would be borderline here, but I haven't lost one yet. Some are 15 -18 yrs. old - the Burkwoodii has the most blossom volume. I like the heterophyllus types too - got O. 'Goshiki' in 2006 and hoping it produces some flowers this year. All are low-maintenance plants in my region.

Daphne 'Carol Mackie' is beautiful; very refined & the aroma is lovely. These are hard to get here - the Landscapers buy up all available stock at the various nursuries. So I have struck out 4 years in a row. Brigg's Moonlight is another that is nice. The ones I have are 'Aureomarginata'. I would recommend a small one 'Lawrence Crocker' - hmmm. I believe that is the name and I think it is a burwkoodii X. It stays under 18", has small Rosy-purple flower clusters and is highly fragrant. I'm not certain about tenderness - It dealt well with a week of 15-20° without leaf damage or breakage from our heavy, wet snow which was ice at that point!

Pictures - none to show at present that are worth seeing. I redid several areas last year so the pics will come as these areas wake up this Spring. But here's part of a long border that resides right outside my family room:
