my plant is dying

Pittsburgh, PA

I repotted my plant about 6 months ago. Now its leaves have brown and yellow spots and their tips and edges get brown. Eventually some leaves become entirely yellow and die out.

What can I do to stop this? Thanks!

The leaves yellowing and falling off sounds like overwatering to me. If it was in a smaller pot before and was almost rootbound, you probably needed to water it a ton to keep it alive, but now that you've got it in a pot where there's more soil (relative to the amount of roots) it will hold onto water better, so if you're watering the same frequency that you did before repotting then you're watering too much.

If I start watering it less regularly, do you think it will recover?

The leaves that are already affected will not return to a healthy state but the ones that are still nice and green should stay healthy.

I agree with Ecrane about the over watering of your plant, the yellow/brown leaves will fall off as they are shocked into stopping growing, also make sure you dont have the plant in too bright sunlight as the leaves can become scorched by the magnification of the sun through glass. you have your plant pot inside another decorated pot, so perhaps without realising it, you are letting the plant sit in water at the roots as the decorated pot will have no drainage holes in the bottom, really not god for any plants, when using the deco pots, it is best to remove the plant and water it, let the extra water drain away, then replace the plant back into the deco pot, or stick your finger into the soil, if dry then the plant needs water, if still wet, dont add any water for another few days, but test the soil again first. good luck. Also---

If you "buried" the plant deeper than it was growing when you transplanted it, it may be the problem. ALWAYS keep the plant at the level it was growing before! Any adjustments to depth should be made by adding about 2" (or whatever it takes) to the bottom first and then setting the plant on top and filling in around the edges.

A plant repotted deeper than it was used to growing will, surely, die a slow death. Do NOT add extra soil on top! Please check on this and if you need to re-pot again (properly)--do so.

If you've been overwatering it for a while, sometimes it's better to take it out of the pot, dump out as much of the potting mix as you can, and then give it some fresh potting mix. Otherwise if the potting mix that's in there is really saturated with water, your roots can continue to rot and the sooner you get it out of that situation the better.
