Second Chance Wishlist Swap #2 - Chat & Questions

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

So sorry, Signups are closed.

For your 2008 New Year's Resolution of organizing and decluttering, I am offering a Second Chance Wishlist Swap. This would include: 2007 seeds, 2008 seeds, plus: 2006* seeds, seeds from half-packs you have sitting around, yuccky swap stuff, and seeds that might include more chaff than you want to clean. Any source. Leftover commercial, garden, trades, we even taken stolen seed.

The deadline is Feb 1 for seeds to be in to me, meaning here at my house., and I will mail them back 2 weeks later, on Valentine's Day. There is a 100 pack limit on seeds going back to you, so if a 1 for 1 trade is important to you, send 100 packs or fewer. All participants should tell me how many packs they sent and how many packs they want back.

The swap is divided into 2 parts: 1) Loose seed packs for the general swap and (2) seeds in baggies for a specific person.

For the loose seed packs, which are packs for the general swap, not for a specific person, I will distribute these based on who I think will like them the best, but I need some limits on quantities:

Limit quantities to 5 of a kind

Herbs ok, but No Veggies, No Shrubs or Trees. (for the general swap, it's ok to send these if you can find a person who wants them)

Limit the commonest seeds to 2 packs, unless you are sending them to a specific person:
COMMON SEEDS:
Morning Glories: Ipomoea purpurea & Ipomoea tricolor
Brown Eyed Susan Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia triloba
Datura
Nicotiana sylvestris
Gaillardia
Liatris
Cleome
Four O Clock's (except Broken Colors, Kaleidoscope, etc.)
(If you want any of those listed above, please let me know!)

*2006 seeds:
No Delphinium
No Larkspur

For the packs to a certain player, all you need to do is post your seeds and watch for the responses. This will be fast and furious, then there will be a lull, then more posting. Please use one post for your seeds available, and try to edit them off as they are taken, (and edit when you add on it as your clean, sort, and sow). You can dmail or post if you want somebody's seeds, but remember, it is up to the sender to get the seeds marked with your name on them, so be sure they see your request.

Grab a box of cheapie snack baggies, sandwich baggies, or ziplocs, and as people sign up, write their name on the baggie or on a slip of paper inside the baggie. If you have seeds for each participant, you might need 30 baggies.

Some seeds are premium seeds because they are rarer and "worth more". As loose packs of seeds come in, I sort of separate those out and distribute them in a way that makes sense in terms of what people send in. If you send in a lot of commercial half packs, or the more premium seeds, you will get more of those back in your envie.

WISHLIST
The last wrinkle is your wishlist! When you sign up, also post 10 things you'd like to have. These can be specific (Lupine 'White Snow') or vague (anything white for part shade).

I need to know what you want before your seeds show up! I have quite a stash myself and need to start seriously culling. Tell me the kinds of things you want!!!! In a private Dmail to me (with the subject line 2nd Chance Wishlist Swap) send your list of 10 or more things you'd really like AND a list of 10 things you really don't want. LOL! It would be so helpful to me if you also added things about you and your garden, such as: I have a Moon Garden; I have too much shade; I have a cutting garden; a Cottage Garden; I like bright colors; big & bold plants; pastels; pinks and purples; I am new to seed growing; I have every seed known to man, try to surprise me. Whatever you can tell me about yourself or your garden will help me sort seeds you'll like into your envie.

Foreign DG members: Yes! You can join! Send me a dmail with your address and I'll send the APHI paperwork to you.

NEWBIES: New DG Members/New Gardeners/New to Growing from Seed: Yes! Join in. You will receive back many more seeds than you send in, but I require that you make an effort to send in something. If you have absolutely nothing to send in, you can dmail me and I'll send you seeds and chaff that you can clean and package and then you can post them on the thread, and send back to me. Or you can go to a small seed house (Fedco, Gourmet, Territorial) and buy a mega pack of a more unusual seed (all for less than $5.00 including delivery) and divide it up into trade sized packages. I'll make up the difference, and I promise you it will be well worth your effort and expense.

Things to pack up for the swap:
1. Your seeds. added: Since I need to send back as many packs as people send in, I need some help counting. LOL! On the baggies that are tagged for certain people, I'd like the number of packs you've enclosed for that person written on the slip of paper with their name so I don't have to go rooting through to count them.

2. Return address label (or piece of paper I can tape) to use on bubble mailer you send to me. I will need at least a 10 x 14" envie, or a little box, to get your seeds to you. (The PO has a 3/4 inch limit on bubble envie thickness)

3. Postage to return your mailer to you. This must be stamps or cash, no metered postage. If you have 100 packs, use postage for 13 oz. and consider sending me a little box instead of an envie. added: If you want extra packs back, really, really consider that box! And pay attention to the postage amount you send me as it will cost more than what you sent in. I am going to keep track of postage.

A sheet of paper with your:
1. name,
2. address,
3. email,
4. DG name,
5. Number of seed packs sent, and number of seed packs wanted back
6. Description of your garden, and yourself as a gardener and grower from seed(new, middle, experienced.)
7. 10 things you want,
8. 10 things you don't want, and
9. a list of the seeds you are sending of all the loose packs that are not earmarked for another player.
10. Added Jan 9, 2008. Due to the sheer volume, I need to send these envelope or boxes back to you with delivery confirmations which cost an additional 75c.
11. It's a secret, but I think a 50c WZ surcharge is in order to pay for shipping a box from Alaska to Indiana. Do what you can, stamps or cash.

I think I have everything, but I'm sure I'll edit this at least once, so check back to this page right before you send your seeds. LOL!

Suzy -- would you like the other two threads closed and moved over here, due to loading problems??

I will TRY to bring everyone over.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

The original thread, the one with the castor bean posts goes here.
But there needs to be a link sending us to here.

#3 will turn into #4 probably very shortly because it is getting very slow to load, too. Do you have time to do that?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

YUP.... right now.

I'll add links on both threads... the very first and #3 [which is actually #2] which is confusing ... but i'll try to get everyone over.

T.

**edited to add......

I do believe the Castor Bean chatter is at an end, since all beans have been found, and we believe it works to keep the moles away due to the poison ... as Dryad wrote

Quoting:
well...the reason they probably work is that's the plant that they develop the highly toxic Ricin from. I had a friend a couple years ago who planted a "Homeland Security" garden, and Castor Beans were in there as an allusion to Ricin. I had not heard of them being a pest deterrent.

Yes, I do, eventually, want a list from everybody. However, I will also throw some of the older stuff out to the trough because I get such a kick out of all of you! LOL!

But I still have about 25 wishlists that I'm not seeing in dmail that need to be made first.

I am still going through MY seeds, so I hope WZ sent her WINE BOX pony express and it doesn't get her for a while. :))) A wine box, a WINE BOX! OMG if it gets here Saturday Mr Clean will see it! That means I better cook a nice dinner on Friday night ...and stuff. ;)

Suzy

Hopefully -- this is all the most current chatter to get this stuff moved. :-)
now where is that wine?? i think i need a stiff one.

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Just wanted to say that Weez is an evil temptress! I know that list and the beautiful seeds you send! I've tried to ignore all the lists when I have posted here, so as not to be tempted. Now my plan is foiled!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL Flower ... i have not ever glanced at the list!!

this thread can be used for general chatter and what-not... and we will try to keep the #4 for posting of Haves and Wants seed lists.

Terese

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Terese has done and outstanding job on those dumb links -- I always get it confused and wacked up and I did again, but she's saved me a couple times!!

Ahhhh, I don't really drink much, but a Bloody Mary or something sounds really good about now LOL!

See you after diiner!

Suzy

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I am so confused now, I'm going to go join Suzy for a couple of drinks, maybe my head will stop spinning.

HEY EVERYONE-check out this viola I just found
http://www.burpee.com/product/plants/annual+plants+for+sun/viola+-+psychedelic+spring+1+pkt+%2835+seeds%29.do

UMMMM purdy:)-

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yeah , I saw that too....and love it! I was so mad at myself. With alllll the seeds I have, I can still open that darn catalog and find 6 things I have to have! Grrrrr.

The seeds are expensive. I wonder if it's perennial, or if the seeds come true or what? It seems a shame to pay that kind of money if you don't get to keep the plants long term.

Suzy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I have viola Bilbo Baggins - really expensive for just 25 seeds. I am hoping I can grow 2 or 3 in isolation and hand pollinate them so I can have lots for a Fantasy Swap I am hosting in Sept,.

Hint - save seeds for anything "Giant" or "Dwarf" or "Fairy" or "Elf" or "magic" or "mystic" or "fantasy" or "spellbinding" or "enchantment" etc.

you get the idea!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Red okra people:
in my patch of red okra... a green baby appeared about every 6-8 random seeds. And that was commercial seeds straight from the packet! so I'm not sure exactly what you will get from my seeds. Clemson Spineless okra was grown within a one mile radius of the red okra. But the flower blooms are almost identical in each...just beautiful ;)

sorry I'm late on catching up - had internet access problems. wine?? I KNEW I was missing something while I was sorting seeds and making lists - LOL!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hiya, Dryad! Glad you're back, and I do not like the 3 new clients you just got at all! None of them! They will probably prevent you from doing all the work I had planned for you! LOL!

Suzy

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Quoting:

......all the work I had planned for you! LOL!

LOL -- I actually had to read that twice to get what you were saying!! [and remember what you'd mean by client]
but OH that is funny!!

if only i lived closer.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

These three literally came out of nowhere - which to me is a clear sign I need to get busy - LOL!! Sleep?? We don't need no stinkin' sleep.......

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I just updated my list today & put in a post about things on people's want lists.

Dryad-thank you for helping me with my Dahlia Dilemma!!!

Suzy, Terese & Dryad-you guys are doing a great job:)

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I'll second that. Thanks for everything you are doing.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

gang - it's my pleasure to assist the Illustrious Illoquin!!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

yea, yea, yea.... what she said.

no really, it;s my pleasure to assist Suzy in this... what a huge task on her end.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Question... when you are DONE... really done... is anyone posting one LAST list of who's getting what ... or most of you have confirmed in DMails?

I think all of my swaps are confirmed and really dont want to have to sort thru it all to do one final post.

Since i sent my "letter" to Suzy .... I think i have about 3 more swaps .... 3-4 that are coming to me, and 2 that are going to others.

just curious as to what others are doing.

Lala_Jane (Zone 5b)

My wants are few right now as I'm just too unsettled and undecided. The only things I'm sure of is that I'm doing a tropical garden this year (I was the originator of the castor bean hub-bub) so anything that might fit in with that theme would be appreciated mightily. Oh and I could also use some celosia seed (Cristata Group...I call them the "brain kind") if anyone has any to spare.

LeBug (Zone 6a)
General Wishes
• I need more yellows and reds in my gardens for part sun. Tall and short, mostly short.

Shorter cosmos so the wind doesn’t blow them over, I have way too much wind!

Purple tansy ~ this won’t be a perennial for me but I have just got to have it! Even if it’s just a very few seeds I will take them and thank you very much!

Perennial Asters ~ any color

Dusty miller
• If anyone has some perennial aster seeds left after this is over I would love to have them, would love to have some taller ones too but I like the shorter ones too, I just like asters but don't want to plant the annuals all of the time too busy planting perennials

Perilla I probably have enough of these just if you have too many left over and want to get rid of them I just might use them :)

Hardy geraniums ~ I have splish splash and bill wallis, no annuals at all please :)

Hardy asters ~ all colors really would like some yellows or pinks if possible, no whites. no annuals please

Shrubs ~ have these already, sweet shrub, beauty berry, holly, sensational lilac, old fashion lilac and sand cherry. I wouldn’t have listed these but was just thinking Weezingreens.

Tree seeds – already have planted in the ground, black and regular pussy willow, holly, ash, eastern red bud, golden rain tree, corkscrew willow and white dogwood. I wouldn’t have listed these but was just thinking Weezingreens, again lol

Short perennials for, my back yard has a lot of sun but not full enough for everything not to lean so would like plants that won’t lean. Yellows and red

Short perennials for dappled sun.

I’m planting a moon garden too I have moon vine and a verbena that glows in the evening and that’s it so far.
From WZ Box
• I'd like to have some ice plant from Weez please if there is any left
• don't have many reds or yellows for part sun, shorter ones

Lenka_Princeton (Zone 8a)
I have a large butterfly garden and grow butterflies during summertime (non-commercial) - so I will be interested mostly in any butterfly nectar and/or host plants that I don't already have and a few of my favourites that I don't yet have which are not necessarily a butterfly magnet :).

I have a weakness for hardy geraniums (cranesbill geraniums) which I heard are hard to germinate (some of them).

I have confirmed all mine through dmails - or they should be at least !

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm just hoping no one forgets my struff, but honestly, if they did, I'm not sure I'd notice! LOL!

Suzy

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL Suzy -- i think with all the seeds that will be in your house.. if you pilfered a few for yourself.. no one would even know.... it's like you get the first dibs on all the goodies.

psssst -- did you get the second file?

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OOhhhhh, what i just did, that i wasnt sure i could...

sent a DMail to myself with all snippets of my swaps... that way now they are in one place.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I did - I just got it, thank you! I have to watch Colts games and the Amazing Race with Mr. Clean on Sundays LOL! I saw it but I couldn't answer right away.

Colts Lost. :(

Suzy

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I know... i watched too. Too bad, i like the Colts.
At least Dallas lost. Now GB has to beat NY
and even though i dont think it will happen,
SD beats NE.

Suzy

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I got a new cookbook on Italian Sicilian cooking (one of my passions) when I was in New Hope, NJ yesterday, and it was talking about fava beans and showed a photo...there are alot of diff types. The blooms on Broad Windsor are pretty, plus it enhances the soil...I want to try them :) I looked them up on plantfiles and it doesn't seem like many people grow them!

The first time I ever even saw a fava bean was when I was working at the White Dog Cafe restaurant in Philadelphia ~ they cooked alot of foods from local farmers and used alot of fresh produce. It was alot of work to peel down to the beans but they are tasty in the end :)

has anyone grown fava beans?

toronto, Canada
