Second Chance Wishlist Swap #2 - Chat & Questions

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

One thing I read from Dave a bit ago about the comments (or was it Terry???). They seem to be weighted for the most recent comments - so those that were glowing get pushed down the ladder with newer comments. I would agree with Terese, I try to read as many of the comments as possible if there are negatives or neutrals. Sometimes it could just be that the company had one bad customer service rep, and that can really hit a company hard. (I also look at the bottom of every potential vendor's home page, and their "about us" page, to see what organizations they belong to. Anytime they can put up something like the BBB or something like that, it increases my confidence in them.)

Thanks!!! I will check out the watchdog!!

Morning jsx, That sounds very nice on a good summer morning. My mom, also a Joyce, loves crosswords. She likes the hard newspaper ones. My frustration with those is that each newspaper puzzle writer has their own "go-to" type of cultural clues that you learn if you do them regularly, and I don't do them regularly. I do like Sudoku, though :).

More good oinkness! I'll have to keep thinking and try to come up with another one. You've definitely all got me beat!

Fairy, I've bought plants from HCG-the parents of the penstemon seeds, in fact. I haven't bought many things, but I've been happy with what they have sent me. They send good instructions and pack them nicely and they have lots of good info on the website. I've got a nice drool list going. :)

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Me too-I had 6 catalogs in my mailbox yest.-the ones that are now crinkled form drool are HCG & Jackson & Perkins-I thought they just did roses, but OMG they have so many BEAUTIFUL things that I HAVE to have(Eventually)!!:0.... (like my drool)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

lol, ew, it's dripping on me!

I'm liking Annie's Annuals catalog a lot, too. Maybe it's a good thing I dont get J&P (yet...I'm sure I'll get one someday) I haven't gotten it yet this year, but last year's David Austin rose catalog was beautiful.

Fairy -- I too have noticed J&P isn't just roses anymore... they started adding more stuff a few years back. I've purchased most of my roses from them... but since i'm out of room ... i barely glance at it anymore... though i get their emails too.
But my Peace has a fungus/bacteria growth **sniff sniff** and I will probably lose it soon. It's my absolute favorite Hybrid Tea.

But ya figure... to "keep up with the competition" they had to start adding other plants.

OH -- and regarding the WatchDog.... also read the companies rebuttal. I find if they "make good" on any problems, they'd be a good company to do business with. If they have crappy customer service... i tend to shy away. I also look for companies with 100% guarantee. Last year i bought this nifty lil plant, and it was $18 i think... within a few months it was dead.... Opps, out the cash... no guarantee. So i highly doubt I will do business with them again... though they are highly rated in here.

If I did forget something, JLMK w/ a Dmail!!

THANKS:)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

awesome... I will make sure that makes it into the stuff I sent Suzy... i think great lists like that make it much easier for her too.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8a)

Fairy, I have ordered a number of times from High Country Gardens. Always healthy plants, if a little small. I ordered a misacanthus from them which was a huge thing in only 2 years.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Terese!! I was going to include the list in with what I send her!! You guys are on top of it!!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I know we have the Illustrious Illoquin and the Devilish Dryad (that's waht I call her-LOL) and now I'm naming tcs "Yoda Terese" because she is knowledgeable in all the things I'm dumb in.

So, Yoda (LOL)-can you tell me how to close a thread that I started??

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Fairy,

I dont think every forum has the CLOSE option.

I know the Plant ID forum does, as does this one, obviously

If it does... the option will be all the way up at the top... like where it says "unwatch thread" it will give you a "close thread" option.

Critter wrote a timely and informative write up on SEED STARTING for anyone who didn't see it...here is the link to it :)

Yanno --- with this only being my second year with seeds ... I am really dreading the task of organizing all these seeds in Excel. Last year i had 2 varieties of Morning Glories, this year 9!
I am probably gaining well over 60 new types of plants ... and just the thought of this is undaunting. I know it will just be a lot of copy/paste ... but i'm really procrastinating. Good winter project!! but i also have to get going on WS'ing.

now if DH would just get out of the chair so i could sit at the main PC and not the laptop where I dont have any of my files.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

You could always use the DG seed thing -- the Journal. I did that last year, but as usual I didn't keep up with paperwork and didn't get a lot of seeds on there, plus I didn't mark which WS jugs never germinated.

On the other hand, it has a place for photos.

Suzy

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

You are telling me daunting-I must have about 150 things to plant this year from seeds-I still have to look up germinating on all of them!! I'm waiting until I get the swap sent in so I have some time!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Well, If you are getting Pentas seed, sow them as soon as you get them.

Suzy

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Suzy, we really just need to have you write an article for DG!!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

question...

ansonfan and I were wondering are all gingers culinary gingers?

I have a few unknown id's and it seems there are lots of diff ginger plants with diff color blooms.

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Wind,

The edible ginger is called Zingiber Officinalis. Ornamental gingers stem from the genus Hedycium. The plants look quite alike but only the first is edible.

To know with which one you're dealing you'll have to dig one up and check out the roots. The smell will tell you all!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

aaaahhhhhhh I was wondering about that. Thank you.

The roots on my pink one (unknown cultivar) look exactly like culinary ginger but when scratched have no ginger odor to them.

I guess the roots grow up to the surface of the soil as they get older? because my red ginger, started from seed, dosn't show any surface roots yet.

Gingers are great potted plants, I'm finding ~ and the hummers love the blooms which makes me love them even more :)

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

You're welcome!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

in Weez's salpiglossis sinuata, I really luv the 'chocolate royale' ... deep browinsh burgundy types get me every time!

The only problem is, I read salpiglossis is prone to aphids and I battled them last summer on my red and blue ensign that also seemed prone to aphids. Any tips on growing salpiglossis?

Quoting:

You could always use the DG seed thing -- the Journal.

I did take a peek at this today... and it may be worth while... plus i can use any computer, where if i was using excel, i'd have to only use this one.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It's slower to edit than Excel would be, but, I didn't have to type as much because the names came straight out of plant files.

If you have Coral Bean seeds, you search PFs, determine which is your seed, then at the bottom of the Coral Bean/ Erythrina herbacea page, there is a link to add it to your Journal.. That way you have the photo and the correct Latin name spelled correctly all right there.

Of course, with all the seed you're getting, I will be surfing all your Journals to make sure you have sown all the seed I sent you int his swap. LOL!

Suzy

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL!! I have no idea when I'm gonna have all that free time... but i'll do my best.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL! I have a plan for the beginning....I sow the seeds in the basement and put the packages in a little cup. The I bring the cup upstairs and start adding the things I sowed byreading the packages and making sure th emepty ones go in one piles and the ones with a few seeds go into another pile. I have the name, how they were sown, the source of the seed, and te date.

The trouble is, the middle and end. If we have 5 really nice days in a row in March, then 70% of my WS jugs germinate within 3 days of one another. The task is overwhelming and to get all that data in. I wish there were check boxes and I could check off everything that did NOT germinate in those 5 days.

It's fun to upload your photos to your own Jourmal and not use the ones in PFs..

Tcs
I found this and I was going to try it, but I don't have the zip file download I need to open it. Even if you don't like that there is a page with tons of plants germination instructions. http://tomclothier.hort.net/page48.html or

TCS-I am wondering Yoda of all searching-can you find who all wanted my pink dogwood seedlings/seeds in the spring??

WIND-I have heard that a diluted solution of dish soap & water will get rid of them!!

I haven't had any problems with aphids, so I don't know from experience-hopefully I will have some in my can to try it with....hehehehehe

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Did someone say pink dogwood seedlings. I would love one, mine died in the move to this house.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I heard from a landscape architect who has been around theblock a couple a times that the seedlings from a pink or red dogwood will all be white. No vairiation, no pale pink, no maybe pink, just white.

I never tested it out

Suzy

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

That would be fine for me. I miss my dogwood from my old house.

so far, Frausnow and LeBug

I did not check KD's list... these pages are loading V E R Y S L O W L Y tonight.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Meredith -- thank you, and yes, i know of the file. I've already got it on my computer and did use it last year for my list.... deleting everything I didn't need -- which was a huge amount of data. It's an awesome compilation of data.

Fariy ..TCS--can you find who all wanted my pink dogwood seedlings/seeds in the spring??

geeze -- i thought i ansered this already.... LeBug and Frausnow wanted it.
I did not check against KD's list, just the threads.... and Robyn ... that one was easy to find. ;-)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH heavens... i had so many tabs open... i guess all i had to do was "refresh".

I gotta go to bed...........

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi tcs, it's really slow for me tonight, too.

I'm not home so I can't double-check right now, but I'm pretty sure I'm sending you some salvia coccinea. Let me know if you don't want it after all?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I was going to make thread #6 tonight, but the pages are loading so slowly, I don't think I can.

Tomorrow for sure. Or if anybody wants to later tonight, feel free.

Suzy

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

susy -- I honestly can't check either as i can't get pages to load... but i LOVE salvia ... so if I'm on your list.... toss it in the envie.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)
