I took this cutting from a friend's plant. When it started to grow it has small white leaves. I can't figue out what is wrong. I have it in bright light, don't over water it, it is in a good soil type for Crasula and I don't think that it is over fertilized because I havn't given it any. I can't think of any thing else that I am doing wrong so I need some help.
Jade cutting has strange growth
Wow...it looks like it's sporting!
This is where variegated plants come from - the original plant sends out this variegated growth, the variegated growth is cut off, rooted, and tested for stability.
I'm not certain that's what's happening, but it sure looks like it to me.
The all white leaves are likely remaining small-ish because they have no chlorophyll to help them grow.
They'll draw chlorophyll from the rest of the plant, and continue to grow (although slowly) but the plant will likely decline from the strain.
*If* that's what's happening with your cutting, you can either let it grow on and see what happens, or pinch that growth off, and the plant will branch thereafter.
I agree, that's what it looks like to me too. Unfortunately those leaves have so much white on them I don't think you'd be successful at taking them and trying to propagate a variegated jade plant with them, they just wouldn't have enough chlorophyll to stay alive.
I would say your soil looks too dry in the pot, these plants are so fleshy , the foliage looks like it is dehydrating, I would perhaps give it a good drink, from the bottom, like sit the pot in a bowl of water with a little house plant liquid feed, once the soil goes a darker colour at the top, remove the plant, then let the pot drain before placing it back onto the saucer, I have a very large plant like yours and every 2 weeks in summer, I give it about 2 pints of water, also with these plants you need to handle them with care as the branches break off very easy, I dont think the plant is a new type of variegation, it is suffering from dryness and feed, too light conditions and you just need ti9me to get the growing conditions right, once you get that, the plant will really reward you and grow tall and bushy. good luck. WeeNel.
It could be that i am not watering it enough but I read that in the winter let it dry out between watering. Maybe I am letting it dry out to much between water but i didn't think I was. I will try saturating the soil real good and see what happens. thanks
Never a good idea to completely saturate the soil, just enough to stop things drying out completely in winter conditions, if you grow plants indoors, and especially in winter time, you might find it a good idea to always keep a water-can or bottle of water sitting in the same room as the plant, that way, when you do water the plants, the water has reached the same temp as the plant, then it wont get too much of a shock when really cold water is poured onto the soil, just a little tip for indoor plant growing. Good luck, lets know how the plant gets on. WeeNel.
