Morning Glories 2008 #01

They are either solid or blizzard. If they are blizzard this will manifest itself in a number of ways depending on what kind of blizzard it may be. Blizzard is dominant but if a vine carries only one blizzard gene it can throw solids. A solid doesn`t have genes for blizzard(unless it is one that manifests only intermitently and it would be very easy to miss in a mass of tangled vines.) A true solid is recessive to any blizzard genes and will only show solid corolla with perhaps other modifiers like a lightened center or decolored crest which looks like paint drying.

Again like Arlan says this is very simplified but pretty much explains a lot. Karen

Blizzard genes not always dominant discussed previously in the following posts

Would recessive blizzard mean recessive to the other more dominant blizzard genes and does not manifest when a dominant blizzard is present? Does it mean it is a blizzard gene that shows only when it is by itself? Karen

Here is another thought and resulting question about the recessive blizzard. Could it be that it requires two recessive blizzard genes together to manifest and having only one would be like a carrier? That would exlain a skipped generation. I`m wondering about it but not stating anything here as facts.

I like the long lists of genes but there isn`t much there to tell what is dominant or recessive to what else or how different ones act together. It says thy act together but it doesn`t say how they act together. So I`ll do more experiments and continue to wonder about these flowers.

I think it is probable that the blizzard pattern consists of a multi-gene inheritance and tso won't follow the simple dominant/recessive explanations.

Some of the genes can be related to a simple dominant recessive and others not. Some of the genes might manifest differently depending on what it is combined with. Who can predict exactly where the blizzard markings will appear? Noone. But you can relay a idea so that some understanding is reached. Karen

Bumping this one up.

My Fujishibori blooms pretty light and seems to turn inside out like an umbrella on a windy day. Its odd but pretty. I'll have to get a pic next time it blooms.

I hit the jackpot for indoor morning glories yesterday morning.

I got a handful of little Convolvulus blooms, half a dozen Cardinal Climber, and two Milky Way. Nothing more exotic than off-the-shelf seeds, but fun nonetheless.

The Milky Way are the first of the third wave of blooms for these two vines, which have already resulted in a few hundred seeds. They're starting to look a little bit ratty, but at this point, they've more than paid back their fair return on my original investment of two seeds.

Emma isn't here anymore :((

Soulja, I am enjoying your photography very much...what you do with light and shadow on the flowers is quite artistic. I am learning a bunch! What camera gear are you using, may I ask?

Hi & thanks Gerris, (i saw & love (!!!) your stuff on EB!!!) It's just a little Sony Cybershot. I swear I do not pump up the saturation, just the focus, but when the sun just comes up in the morning and is still low, it hits the windows and lights these things up. I've had to actually tone down a few cuz i think they look fake. I guess that's just how beautiful these flowers are. I'm having a total blast. You all know the feeling....
