CCG, I think I understand what you are saying except for a few things....
You said "type out the link for the WS database (where are you doing that)?
You said bookmark it for future use (I haven't used that feature before, is that like using 'my favorites' on my own computer?
Like many other things here on DG, I guess Dave doesn't have a Tab for this yet, correct? Do you know if he plans on arranging the list in alphabetical order? I was trying to find some information on a particular plant and they are all mixed up...finally gave up. lol
Thank you for your help. I've been a member here for 7 yrs., and the site changes so much, that sometimes I just can't keep up. :-)

Winter Sowing Data Base page 3
You said "type out the link for the WS database (where are you doing that)?
SoCal, I was just trying to type out the complete link (rather than relying on a DG hyperlink) because I had thought you needed the complete address--I think I misunderstood. And yes, "bookmarking" is the same as adding a link or a site to your favorites.
Do you know if he plans on arranging the list in alphabetical order? I was trying to find some information on a particular plant and they are all mixed up...finally gave up. lol
What I finally figured out is that the list of seeds on the WS database IS in alphabetical order, but it's by Latin names. . . except that they aren't specifically given. The list is arranged by common names and you just have to know the Latin name to look up the seed in alphabetical order.. I find this very difficult, myself.
I've only been a member for two years and I am pretty much a novice.
Alphabetical by latin name
If you're unsure of the latin name use Plant files to look it up
And we are hoping to get a tab soon...right Dave? :o)
5 pages with much more to come in the Spring. I have well over 300 species that are in some form of plastic in my back yard with many more to go. All for the sake of this data base. Hope more people from zone 4 sign on to enjoy it :o)
Maybe more people will learn that they can garden in zone 4, Robbi! :)
CCG, thank you again for clearing up my quiry. :-)
Pam, thank you also for that info.
Donna
I have 3 jugs growing now. One the tag fell off of, looks kinda like Nasturtuims. One is the Corncockle I got from the WS swap and one is Bachelors buttons mix. If it gets really cold again I may sit them in the GH for extra protection.
Maybe in addition to a "click here to add a comment on this plant to the winter sowing data base" we could also have a link on the PF page that would take us to the database to see if there is a comment for this plant?
Or am I getting ahead of myself?
Critter, I really like that idea! Being able to jump straight to the WS database to check sure would make it easier.
The main problem I'm having is that the only way to get there currently is to find the link on this thread... or am I missing something?
I put the link in an article that'll run on Feb 2 (also linked to this series of discussion threads and to the WS forum), which may give people a somewhat easier way of finding it.
Has the Database been tagged? I haven't checked... that could be a way of finding it, too.
It does need a more obvious link somewhere, though... if not on the PF pages, maybe under the "Guides & Information" tab?
It's been tagged (I did that as soon as I could, because I was always having trouble finding it).
I know...I keep trying to get Dave's attention-LOL
Let me try again-
yooo hoo Dave, any idea when a direct link to the WS database will be coming? I know you are busy and all...but PLLEEEAAASSSEEEEEE we are begging! :o)
Lets see if that works :o)
dylan...yours are up??? WOW!!!! I still have snow on top of many of mine-LOL and I am still adding jugs whenever I can-LOL. That reminds me, I have a few more I need to get outside before they start to sprout!
I wonder how Dave would feel about being cloned??
That is not a bad idea!! LOLOL
Over the weekend we were in the mid to high 60s. Yesterday I got up to go to work and it was 60*, at lunch it was 45* and by yesterday evening it was 15* and snow. The wind was blowing at 30-40mph. I thought we were going to freeze. Today I got up and the wind has laid some and it's supposed to be 45*. Tomorrow they are calling for 6-8" of snow. Winter in MO, ain't it grand.
If my poor little seeds make it through this they will indeed be tough.
I would love to have just one day over 42º instead of a day under -42º
LOL
No snow for us-LOLOLOLOL tee heee he ha ha ha !
I have 3 more pots up today even in the snow that we got yesterday. YIPEE I can add to the WS Database now.
So glad Dylan-I am so glad I can call you that again!! LOLOLOLOL
I wanted to stop in and give you hugs, so ((HUGS)) and tell you I will be writing back soon. I have just been on long enough to say hello and then I dash off again. I do miss you though!! I promise I will write back soon!!
I have so much WSing to do yet, it is a bit daunting (SMILEY) LOL we can't use smilies this week so I am writing it-LOL.
Gots ta run
Robbi
Is there any word on when this database may have its own tab? I keep losing it and have to search for this thread to get there?
How is everyone doing with their WS?
Anyone getting sick of seeds yet-LOL I am after planting over 400 different containers and my deck covered-with still more to go. I am hoping that there will be a direct link before Spring hits!! PLEASE DAVE??!!
Hey Robbi! I'm up to 255. I've just about planted some of every kind of new flower & herb seed that I have. I saved some seed to spring plant almost everything so I can compare the results. I don't have a large area under the grow lights but I'll try to plant small pots of everything I can fit out there. My data keeping isn't the greatest but I should be able to say what does better for WS vs indoors. I also did a little direct sowing in my wildflower bed. (I'm hoping something will grow tall enough to crowd out some of the white yarrow. It keeps taking over.)
I only have maybe 8 or 10 odds & ends to finish up. However! When the march RR comes I'll have to get busy again.
LOL-I hear that-that is why my RR is in April, no chance for more WS (I hope!!)
You should come join us!! It will be loads of fun!!
got you Robbi!!
You sure did!!
Thats what I get for posting before I have my coffee!! :o)
LOL.....
Hi all, would seeds from Mums winter sow?
I never saved seeds from Mums but out in the gardens a couple of days ago I seen seeds still on the plant, well these even grow?
What do mum seeds look like? They must be tiny aren't they? Do you just harvest the whole head & plant chaff & all?
Well Pam , I don't know . Never messed with them before. The flower heads were all dried up. And I picked them like I would marigolds or Zinnia, Would they have the seed like that , or did I just pick a bunch of dried up old flowers : (
this might help
http://www.backyardnature.net/fl_mum.htm
OH my onewish1, thank you for the link . well I don't see any "achenes" with my cheap eye specks, not saying there not there but I bet its unlikly. More like I have a meat tray (recycled) full of dried up mummies : (
Thanks for that cool site tho, wow right up and personal with the mums
all i did was put mum seed picture in goggle... amazing what you come up with quickly
Thanks! Very helpful articles. I've saved sunflower, aster, Black-eyed Susan, dahlia, and zinnia seeds but never chrysanthemum seeds. Guess it's just a matter of figuring out the corresponding structures. Now I want to go outside to check mine out again. (Next time it warms up. LOL)
well ya did good, I sure didn't think of it, just picked dead mums , thanks again.
What did we do before internet???????? Its a great tool , everything you want to know and learn. I still like the hands on and personal advice from others , but when things get tech then its good to have expert advice on that. I could have waisted a milk jug on those dried up mums for winter sowing , so I do thank you and learn something new : )
I also love learning all these things... I haven't saved my mum seeds... but I have started them from bought seed.. that's another way I figure out what they look like
:)
Years ago (back when I was in my 20's) I bought some perennial seeds & tried to grow them. Mums, coreopsis, I don't remember what all. Nothing grew. So I thought it was a waste of time & money to try. Then about 6 years ago I had dinner with a friend of my daughter & her husband. An older woman with perennials everywhere. She said she grew them from seed. She gave me a few seedlings that took right off. That was my inspiration.
Ever since I've been trying to start a few each spring. But this WS stuff is great. Playing in the dirt in January & February when the seed catalogs have you yearning to be in the garden! And waiting expectantly to see the results! Potentially, hundreds of new plants to look forward to. Great fun!
Congrats!! ZONE ENVY!!
My little babies will have to sit through negative temps again this weekend-no hope of germination outside :o(

Here is a site to see what the chrysanthemum seeds look like.

BTW I did check mine out today & I think one had had seeds but they either never completely matured or they shriveled up. But now I at least know what to look for next year.
I know rebecca has been adding some of her winter grown seedlings to PF I would like to encourage all of you to do the same. I'm not sure yet how the 2 databases will combine but I'm sure they will at some point. Thank you Rebecca.
