DAILY PICS VOL. 48

Thanks pelle, it sat there for some time which is unusual.

Black silhouette, Rook maybe.

Wallaby~ You have the black and blue going on!! Nice pics!! Curious about the last one too...

Great Ring-necked pics Charles!

:-)

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Black and blue make a nice combination don't you think!

The last one is definitely a crow of sorts, there was a few of them and quite large so probably a rook. The beak looks long and they have a bald face giving the impression of a longer beak. I'm sure Resin will be along soon!

These guys are scratching so hard they're throwing snow up on the backs of the others.

Quoting:
I got a couple of good ones of a cute little Titmouse this morning. Is it a Tufted?

Errrr . . . yes, and no . . .!!

It's a hybrid Tufted Titmouse × Black-crested Titmouse. Checked in one of my books, and Georgetown TX is right on the narrow border where the two species abut each other and interbreed. So the crest is dark blackish-grey, not mid-grey (Tufted) nor solid black (Black-crested). Go 30 miles east, and you'll only get Tufteds, go 30 miles west, and you'll only get Black-cresteds.

In older books, Black-crested Titmouse is listed as just a subspecies of Tufted, but it was split recently to be a separate species in its own right.

Peeper,How cool that you have a Hybrid!!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

So many beautiful pics everyone and I can't tell you all how much I enjoy looking at every single one of them. There are so many I will never see in person and this is certainly the next best thing. And now to find out there are Hybrid's!! Who knew?!!

Here is a Male House Finch...he looks like he is taking flight but I think he was just stretching his wings or showing off!

Deb, this must have been the day for American Kestrels! I noticed one today also but couldn't get very close!

Here is Male and Female Cardinal and a little American Goldfinch ground feeding outside the garage window. There was actually about a dozen Goldfinches but couldn't get them all herded together (must be losing my touch)! LOL!

Wow, that is so cool! Thanks, Resin! I was just looking in my Birds of Texas book (just picked up at WBU day before yesterday) and was coming here to say I *thought* it was the black crested instead of tufted. Now I know why it was so hard for me to decide. It's both!

I think I've got bunches of them. I'll have to look closer from now on. I've been seeing titmice at the feeder more than anything else, but that one was in the front yard, not where I usually watch.

Wallaby, told my DH you posted a Blue Tit and he sighed with pleasure. He misses those little birds.

Las Cruces, NM

The sun finally came out for a little while today and so did the birds. Here's a few Gambel's Quail enjoying their lunch.

I put up a new thistle seed sock today. Within minutes, a few lesser goldfinch were munching away.

The highlight of my day was finally getting a photo of a killdeer.

DH asked me if they actually kill deer; so I had to explain that their name comes from the sound of their call, which sounds like "kill deer, kill deer".

We had a sunny day, first one in weeks. I took full advantage of the three hours of light good enough for bird photography. Sunrise was at 10:10 A. M. A few of the 300+ pictures I took were keepers. A flock of six American Robins feeding on frozen Crap Apples were the first of my subjects.

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

I have seen this flock three days in a row now, in the same general location.

I had to retun to the truck to warm my fingers half way through the session with the Robins. The temperature was only about 10 degrees F.

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

After the session with the Robins on the south end of town, I drove to the north side looking for male Pine Grosbeaks. The Grosbeaks frequent feeders in several yards on Government Hill. No males, but there were two females and lots of Redpolls in one yard. I'll have to keep trying to get a good shot of a male, on a sunny day.

A few of the Redpolls at the second photo secession.

There was a flock of Waxwings feeding in a tree at the opposite end of the block from the Redpolls and Grosbeaks. I took a couple hundred pictures of the BW's. However, I filled the first memory card, had to quit and drive a couple of miles to buy another. I took 124 shots on the second memory card, some as close as six feet. I'll post one of shots now, and save a few of the best for later, after I have time to sort them.

Dellrose~ I love the pic of your HFinch with the wings up.. Great Kestral pic too!

Jane~ Funny story about your DH and the Killdeer... We get them here too. They are very entertaining birds in action too. If you come upon a nest in Spring the parent watching the nest will gimp away from the nest acting injured in order to lure danger away from their nest. Such fakers, so funny to watch!

Yep Wallaby, black and blue are a nice combo.
Gary~ You are the trouper! Wonderful pics of some wonderful birds! I would have to take my laptop out with me on such a trip, and download the pics when the card was full. It never hurts to have an extra card though. Can't wait to see what you've sorted out.

Great BJ pics GM!! Nice to see you catching up Nanny. Looks like you had a colorful New Years!! Great Cardinal pic TKeeper, nice kitty!!!!

Nice pics u-all!

I had a noisey BJ this morning myself.. gleaning peanuts from the mix:-)
