Rose nice cozy setup. Your gold finches are really cute, they remind me of the little chicks My mother use to get every spring.

tabasco,
Can you buy from BestNest as a walk in?! I can drive there also, but I didn't know if they were opened to walk ins for purchases or not. Can you let me know? Thanks!
Marilyn,
When you click through the Best Nest order process at the very end they say if you want to you can pick up your order at the Blue Ash warehouse from 9 to 4 work days.
I ordered more than $75. so I'm having it delivered anyway. Next time I'll order more modestly and pick it up to save the shipping.
I have picked up orders from them when they were located here in Anderson Twp. on Beechmont.
(I just read on the internet that the owner, Mr. Woeste, aged 32, was killed in a plane crash last May, 2007. He was the father of four small children and lived here in Anderson. Makes me sad. He and his wife have built a thriving business and I hope his wife will be able to continue with it. Best nest was one of the fastest growing companies in Cincinnati.)
I ordered the Woodpecker seed cakes and Fruit and Nut seed cakes. And a meal worm feeder. I just read that the Blue Bird count was down this year and I want to try to help out the ones that are out there in the cold trying to survive!
We had a great day at the feeders today! And we put our Christmas tree out under one of the feeders and saw an immediate increase in activity near that one. Lots of fun.
Happy birding! t.
Sorry to hear that about the owner. :-(
And a shot of some of our backyard feeders with a northern flicker visiting today...
Edited to add that I am sorry these pics are loading so large--I am learning a new photo program and still stumbling along...may have to revert back to Picasa which seemed simpler to me...

Really nice Tabasco...I especially love that Flicker, I've never seen one at a feeder! Your pics don't seem too large, I think Dave's adjusts them to a certain size (read that someplace)!!
Rose
Nice pics tab!
Is that suet or seed cake in the feeder the Flicker is at?
Thanks, pelle. I'm still fiddling with the photo program included with this new computer. Don't like it as well as my old Picasa so haven't posted any pics lately...
Let's see-- I put 2 small cakes of cheapo 99 cent 'high energy' suet from Kroger in that feeder. (That one is where I want to put a large nutty seed cake.)
dellrose, We have 3 Northern Flickers hanging around here this winter. They will eat off the porch railing too. And they come up to my plastic suction window feeder here by my desk. I put out some unshelled peanuts too but I think they prefer the suet.
I just looked up the Cornell write-up on them and it says they like insects (ants) the best, then fruits and seeds. And Cornell says they are ground eaters...well, they come to all of my suets and most of my suets are plain ones (no nuts/seeds) right now and are hanging from shepherds' hooks...I think there might be another Flicker in my bowl of seed in the first pic I posted. (That has safflower and BOSS in it.)

I have more Cardinals this year than ever before.
What's the secret? :^) (like you can't already see the picture below)
PUMPKINS!!!!!
My little daughter brought home this little bitty pumpkin from school around Halloween.
So around Thanksgiving, after the newness wore off, I swiped the little pumpkin, and sliced it open.
Lots of nice little pumpkin seeds. I said, I bet something would love these, and boy was I right.
The few Cardinals that came around went out and told their friends and neigbors, and now they're having a ball. Me and my 12yo son went walking around the neighbor hood the other night after noticing neigbors throwing away their perfect plump pumkins, and we hauled them home. Now I've got several pumpkins just waiting to be hacked open to reveal their treasure. Now, I'm also noticing that the birds actually eat part of the inside flesh of the pumpkin too. Then, once all the pumpkin seeds are gone, I fill the pumpkin half with regular bird seed, and the birds love that too. If it's not too late, and you still have some pumpkins around, please remember our birds.....
((come and take some of mine!))
And mine, lol. Good ideas Paul. I might try this next year on my platform feeder.
Nanny -- I do just have one Squirrel - so I guess I haven't discovered the real problem yet.
He's fun to watch but very skiddish.
Also, I recently realized why and how my pretty Sunflowers were getting eaten up.
One day I'd have a nice sunflower that would be drying on the plant, and the next day they were completely gone. I said to myself, I'd like to find the caterpillar that was eating these. Well, the light bulb finally clicked in my head that it was my friendly little Squirrel. He swipped at least three sunflower heads from my plants. One day here, next day gone.
Oh well, I just hate I couldn't watch him do that.
Have a good day.
Paul - thanks for the pumpkin idea. I have one in the garage that I was wondering what I should do with it. Squirrels are fun to watch, but they do steal a lot of seed. They and the resident chipmunks here take a mouth full and then bury it somewhere in the yard (or potted plants) for later. Usually they forget where they buried it and I have sunflower plants in bunches growing all over the place! Becky
Tabasco,
Thanks for the info and letting me know! Love the Flicker on your feeder! I've never had a Flicker on any of my feeders, lucky you! And, you mention that you have, not one, but three hanging around ! Wow! They're so neat and beautiful!
Pford,
We have more than a dozen or so of the gray and the red squirrels! You can have every single one of them! LOL! They're 'pigs' and they come everyday of the year. And, the new babies come with the rest of them. Speaking of 'pigs', the starlings are too! I put bird food on the ground (as well as, feeders) for the birds that prefer to eat on the ground. Gotta take care of them! ;-)
Thanks for the info about the pumpkins and pumpkin seeds! I'll remember that for next year!

There's those pics I posted!! For the life of me, I couldn't remember which thread it was !!
I thought I was on the daily pic thread when I posted them! LOL
Another 'senior moment.'
Any hoo, I have ordered the Stokes Screen Finch Feeder. The cheap one I picked up at Lowes is junk plus the seed was bad. Aaargh! Picked up a couple of the big birdola seed block cages too.
Will have to check out pumpkin seeds as well!
A make due set up for the little ones...so far the Starlings haven't bothered it!
Need some kind of feeder for my front porch maybe. Though during the summer I do have a Humming Bird feeder out there. Wish I was as creative as you!
We saw a story about how fish oil supposedly helps Alzheimer patients on the evening news, just as I was taking my lunch pill that I had forgotten to take (I take 1,000mg 3x a day). My dh said it doesn't seem to be helping me!!!! LOL
dellrose,
thanks for the wren,
Looks like he's got his foot hiked up on the Bar - bellied up for a drink. haha
great pics everyone.
The toilet lid cracks me up.
I put a pumpkin out a while back and I don't think anyone took to it. We have 4 squirrels out in back of our apartment and they didn't touch it. My suet on the other hand, now that's another story. lol
That toilet lid has been a really good investment...I've used it on the high platform feeder, as a ground feeder and now on the fence for the wee little ones. I've have it there for 2 days now and the starlings haven't touched it. It works great with the glass baking dish holding water! LOL!
I had my pumpkins out for a long time before the starlings finally ate all the seeds...as well as all of the suet! They have also eaten all the peanut butter every place I put it. I don't think the other birds got hardly any of the suet or pb!! GRRRRRRR!!!
Here's a bad pic (surprise) of a feeder that only the finches can use (so far)! They are so cute when they climb inside and eat to their hearts content (it is holding sunflower hearts)!!
dellrose what do you have inside the planter? Is it completly filled with sunflower seed or do you have something holding the seed at the top?
Betty
Very cute pics Rose!
