They are really brave little birds. Mine never seem to care about my presence.
Great feeders and pics ladies!
Nice pic burn!
The Evergreens look lovely w/ all the snow on them!
Nice feeders Brrr! :0)
Gee Burn, you are almost making me wish it snowed here. (Not really).
Thank, I just know, you guys are envious of our snow. Now admit it...LOL I'll rub it in even more, we're getting a snow storm warning for tomorrow also. My DH said to offer it to you for a SASE.
I'll take you up on that burn if SUN is guaranteed w/ the snow. :-)
LOL! I will second that about some sun, pellle! I think we had about 15 minutes late this afternoon before the it started to set.
But your snow is pretty, burn.
Pelle, No Promise on the SUN. It just wink at us once in a while. :)
Thanks Nanny, Do you have a lot of snow your way?
Very nice pics sadie!
My Juncos along w/ others seem to like the large seed cake.
What a sweet pic! I love the Titmouse!
Thanks Pelle :-)
Do you have your seed cake in a feeder? My Juncos occasionally get on a platform feeder but mostly just stay on the ground. It could be because I keep seed scattered in the grass for the ground feeders though.
Lot's of good ideas and pretty pics here! And so much to keep up with! I'll have to check out the PetSmart website too.
Did you see Critter's article about how to re-use your Christmas tree as a suet feeder? http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/467/?utm_source=nl_2007-12-31&utm_medium=email
Looks like a fun project--especially if you still have teenagers or college kids home from school and you're looking for a way to put them to good use (both the trees and the kids!)
We did our Christmas Bird Count Sunday at our feeders--it was fun and we had some interesting birds to report to the Audubon/Cincinnati Bird Club! I highly recommend it to everyone--it's usually the Sunday after Christmas in most areas...
About the indigo buntings in KY--we had an incursion if IBs last year in the region and many folks reported new sightings--had something to do with the Boreal Forest seed crops...
Happy New Year to all!
Hi tabasco, Happy New Year!
That was a good article by critter.
Nice one burn!
Hi, all,
I have been rereading the old threads and all the discussion on feeders and mixes and I
am wondering about all the different seed "cakes"-- so, is there one that you've noticed is more popular with the woodpeckers than another? I would like to attact more Northern Flickers and of course my elusive Pileateds...
And are there ever really good sales on these seed cakes? I haven't found any sales on good cakes (like for woodpeckers) just the 'high energy' cakes with cracked corn on sale at Kroger...
Another question, too--- has anyone tried these duo cakes offered by Drs. Foster and Smith? Just wondering if they are effective in attracting more/better birds and worth the price... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=9089+15266+16468&pcatid=16468
If you have a favorite "seed cake" (not suet) brand, I would love to know about it.
Thanks. t.
Hi Tab, I haven't tried the duo cakes.
There are 2 seed cakes I like from Birdola
The Plus Cake and the Woodpecker Cake
http://www.birdola.com/products_feedcakes.htm
I can't always find the woodpecker cake around.
Pelle :-)
Thanks, pelle. Do your Pileateds like those?
I have been to five stores (home depot, lowes, petsmart, kroger, and our feed and seed stores) looking for the big woodpecker cakes and they all seem to be out of stock. Im speculating it might be because the price of peanuts is so high...I'm sure they have them at WBU and the bird boutiques but I hate to pay those prices!
We are doing a little experiment with the small suet cakes--we have three kinds out in the feeders--berry, high energy, and peanut, to see if one is more attractive than another to woodpeckers...the jury's still out.
:-( I don't have Pileateds.
I have found my Downy Woodpeckers like the Almond Suet best.
If you go to the link I sent you can click on "Buy It Online" and Petsmart
and Best Nest both carry the Woodpecker cake.
Almond suet! Well that is gourmet! (-:
Best Nest is in Cincinnati and I'll drive over there to get some. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Tabasco,
I have found that my woodpeckers perfer the woodpecker suet over the woodpecker cake. But I only have downys.
Betty
tab, Best Nest carries a brand of Almond suet along w/ Woodpecker suet.
Another one mine liked was Insect Suet.
The only flavors of suet I've used are Woodpecker suet and the Peanut suet, my WPs seem to prefer the Peanut suets. I also use seed blocks/cakes and seed bars, I've seen WPs on both of those.
Happy New Year everyone :-)
I think my problem is I put out 4 different flavors of suet at a time, lol and those I
mentioned seem to be their favorite.
I am trying the Almond suet right now. It hasn't been a big hit so far. I am thinking about putting PB on it to draw them to it.
I put out some of my homemade suet today made with lard and peanut butter and the Starlings ate it all!! I must have had hundreds in the yard at one time today. !
Here is a corner post where I have a heavy plant saucer with Boss and added a branch from a red cedar tree. The little finches just love it now!
Rose, I really like the way you've fixed that corner post. Maybe if the DH puts the cows in the back pasture, I can fix some like that...if the cows are up here, they're nosy and would knock everything off >:-( He also cut a lot of our post tops on a slant, which has made me not be able to use then like I'd like to...huffing as I say men!
Thanks Sadie! DH decided to let our heifers in the lot left of that post and so far they haven't bothered it. They did knock down everything on another post though and tromped through my compost pile!! Grrrrrr...but DH was a sweetie and brought a hugh cedar limb and put it in an unused round bale feeder. It is as big as a tree and the birdies just love it big time! They really need that type of coverage and we have lots of cedar limbs where we had to bulldoze due to the ice storm damage.
