I live in northern Michigan where it gets really cold in the winter. So areas by windows are quite cool, not sudden drafts, but feels drafty to me. However I have heard that they do like air circulation.
I would love to have hoya's that have beautiful leaves, or flowers, preferably both. That would be easy for a beginner.
Suggestions?
Best Hoya's to start with - indoors?
I have a few hoya's but I have no idea which ones would do well in a cool to cold window. I live in Florida so it's pretty mild down here year round and I am able to leave my plants outside on the porch or deck pretty much all the time. We did have two nights last week of 36 and 38 degrees so they all came indoors for a couple of days.
Most plants like good air circulation but not drafts of cold air, nor drafts from indoor heat vents. Both can cause ill effects with plants. Maybe you could purchase an inexpensive hoya and try it in your window to see how it does over the winter months.
I think the Hoya Kentiana is one that will do okay in cooler temperatures but not sure how cool. Hopefully some more experienced grower will come along soon to give you some good advice and maybe a list of which ones prefer cooler temperatures. I found this info when googling but it doesn't say which hoya plants: http://www.steamboatpilot.com/news/2007/dec/14/deb_babcock_plants_cool_spaces/
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I purchased a Hoya australis from Logees a few months ago, and it is doing quite well in my cool New England livingroom. I have it out of direct light near a west-facing window. I haven't gotten any blooms yet, but the leaves are very lush.
I just bought a Hoya carnosa from Logees yesterday. I hope I have the same luck with this one, because it is amazing! The leaves are curly and variegated and it grows into a rope shape.
