winter boredom

Comer, GA(Zone 7b)

here it is mid December,it has rained for the last 24 hours and the wind is horrendous today seems like 25 or 30 mph just like the weatherman forecast.I really want to be getting something done towards spring gardening as soon as the wind dies down. Any suggestions? Can you tell I've gotten cabin fever being cooped up for 2 days.

Just be thankfull that it rained, We were close to the record drought since the late 1880's. Hope fully we will get more. Time to get seeds and planters ready for early planting. Transplants of broccoli, Cabbage, cauliflower to start in late January. Potatoes and English peas to go in in early February. Tomato, pepper, eggplant to start in February. Still have a few fruit trees and shrubs to prune. Plenty to do.

Farmerdill is so right, there is lots of fun things to do between now and next spring, like get along to the library for some books on landscaping or plants, or the cosy book stores you have over in USA where you can sit with a cup of coffee and pour over all the plant books you like for ideas, plants with pictures. Mag's with add for plant catalogues etc, then write a wish list of ideas, plants etc you would like to send for to put in the garden next year, send off for seed/plant catalogues even just for colour schemes to try out on your own garden, they give people lots of ideas, on dry days, go outside and prune, tidy or make a list of things you want to change, plant or add to, there is always something to do weather permitting, so stop the doldrums and get out and about to refresh your mind of plans you want for the next years gardening, you could even start off some sweet peas etc for next year as they really like a long germination period to make good strong roots, good luck, cheer up and happy gardening. Dunno. It's snowy outside and I have a flat tire (still) on my car so I can't go anywhere, but...

My Caspar pumpkin plants are growing at lightspeed. My cucumbers are doing well, the habaneros that the cat did NOT eat (she ate one whole plant) are doing well... cat keeps eating the darned carrots and beets though - looks like I won't have those this winter. She hasn't eaten my garlic, though. We had lovely garlic greens in our eggs a couple of days ago. My peas didn't like the heater, so I moved them - and have been watering them more often, as they seem to need it. And the butternut squash thinks my bedroom is a playground. :)

All in all, I'd say it's a lovely winter for gardening. ☺

We are seriously considering getting one of those electric fence things for inside the house, when we get it - that way, maybe the cat won't go into the room I keep my plants in. *laugh*

I do all Weenel says, but also 'try' to accomplish some house stuff that I will never do in good weather, like painting or this year, make curtains, or other decor touchup. . Basically, try to be good housewifey to assuage my guilt over excess garden time the rest of the year.

Still a little to early for me to do winter sowing and not double my work, so I'm setting up bulbs for forcing. I got a wonderbar sale on hyacinths in one of the big box stores on sale 50 percent off, so I got 4 at 2.85 ea.......I took em and ran! LOL

Hi Sevidra, had your problems with our cat once, now I grow Nepeta (cat mint) the cats love it to eat, that way they leave all my seedlings alone, don't even go near them anymore, try buy 2 plants as one is eaten, the other puts on some new growth, it is like a treat for cats and is sold dried in pet stores, seems like it is a tonic for them, good luck. this time of year, I'm fond of curling up on the couch in front of the fireplace with a lap dog, a cup of tea, reading through the seed catalogues, and dreaming......

highlight all the stuff I would like, then add it all up, and pare down the list to something closer to the gross national product of just ONE country...........

I'm such a sucker for the pretty pictures and the promises of the plant descriptions.....

ROFL you shop the same way I do, driven! I have so many hand-written lists of things we just can't afford... I dream a lot. :)
