Today's Weather in Your Garden - 8

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Snow today. One to three inches. Very white and pretty cause I'm not driving in it. We are celebrating Xmas today. Grandkids, my kids, and a pancake and sausage brunch. Almost time for a nap!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Little more light snow here. Not too bad today though,30 and sunny.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Snow, sleet, freezing rain....just a lovely mix!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Very light drizzle and 37.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Have you had snow yet Pirl?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A little bit a few weeks ago but it was gone the next day. I'm sure we'll still get more in January...through March, though for the last winter season we only needed the plow twice.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Twice! Now thats awful. We had an account that had a heated driveway and never had to plow - you better think about it.LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How was it heated? Coils under the blacktop?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Coils in the gravel base under bricks.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow, that must cost a bit to install and operate.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

If you have to ask - you can't afford it.LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Don't laugh! I priced it and to do the whole driveway, as of two years ago, was $30,000. and that, of course, doesn't include the electricity used during the snow storms.

When I worked at a real estate office there was a woman who had the driveway and all of her walks electrified so she'd never have the snow problem but that was eons ago.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow! How big is your driveway, Pirl?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

About 20' wide but I don't know the length. It's wider at the garage entrance and down to the street.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Is that life size?
I could plow that - you don't care about your grass do you ;)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I don't - he does.

The front piece would be ideal for roses, Japanese irises and daylilies.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice! Which one of you climbed the tree?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We don't do tree climbing. Every so often a plane comes over and photographs all the homes in the area and then they drive up with the prints. We have them covering about the last 33 years.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Really?! I would love that. I have a grainy satellite photo of mine.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Google your home and take a digital photo of the screen, then crop and voila!

Pirl - talked to my Dad last night (he's in upstate NY) and it was warmer there then here! We got to 45 yesterday in the "warm spots!"

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Funny! Tomorrow we're due to have 52 - not bad for December.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It's mid-morning and it's 31° outside! Whoohoo!!

Yesterday we had a slight falling of sleet and then snow. I was driving back from visiting my newest grandson at the hospital and laughed and laughed when I saw a shiny silver beamer that had slid off the road. No. No one was hurt or injured. I just thought it was funny that I was perfectly safe in my beat-up '96 Buick station wagon, and there's this brand-new beamer that obviously couldn't handle New England!!

So, the forecast for today:
31° now
Partly cloudy with an expected high of 39°

Winds are calm and out of the SW
Humidity is at 89%

Dew Point is at 29°
Barometric Pressure is 30.28 and steady

Visibility is down to four miles due to some slight fog

Tonight and tomorrow look to be messy with either sleet and freezing rain or more snow.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

42 and sunny here now. 50's tomorrow here as well!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, it's ending the year on a great note!

More snow here yesterday.

My daughter took some pics - this is one.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

It's 45 and sunny right now at 1:00. The rain during the night washed down more snow.
Becky, 10, and I have had fever colds since Christmas. Hers spiked at 101.4 and I've been running 99.1. These are higher temps for us because our norm is 97.3. She has a stuffy nose and sore throat. I've just got that "woozy" head, and tired.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Al - your daughter is doing a nice job of following in your photo footsteps! Nice shot!

Sue - I left New England with the same kind of virus you are describing.....ugh! This is the first time I've been sick since we retired a bit over a year ago. My DH very kindly did some grocery shopping for us (empty fridge after being away 10 days) and has marked the kitchen at supper time off limits for me. Yay........I love it when he cooks!! LOL You know I'm feeling rough when I almost passed on our morning walk.....glad I did it....it felt so good to get back in the groove! Catching up here on DG is a good way to pass the time!!

Today here it is 79 degrees in my garden. Most of my plants, the new living fence shrubs and my big pots of veggies are doing just great, thanks to the efforts of my wonderful neighbors here! BUT - my cukes have some sort of unfamiliar pest going to town on the leaves, which are covered with some gross dark green little eggs. eeeeuuuuuwww. The plant still has tons of flowers on it, but I have to do some research on the bugfiles to see what this interloper is and how to obliterate it! On a happy note, my green beans are loaded and ready to pick.....tomorrow. I also have a large pepper on my Big Bertha pepper plant, but the leaves are shriveling up. More research needed.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Not a bad day today! DH was able to get the driveway scraped and cleaned off and ready for the next snow fall. We were supposed to get 3-5 inches last night but it didn't happen!! Eleanor

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Still colder than Upstate NY here......no snow in sight.

( snivelling and feeling sorry for myself, I love snow (except the yellow kind...)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I think dogs are the only ones who find yellow snow fascinating. :-)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I sure hope so Pirl!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's that old "Who's the new guy in town?" theory that dogs seem to enjoy.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I don't know how they don't run out ;)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

LOL!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

They probably know how to dole out a certain portion for every stop they make and know enough to mark all the popular gathering places.
