transplanting

Bakersfield, CA

I was given a few plants that are in desperate need of transplanting. I really want to do this job now, but thinking I should wait untill spring. Do I really have to? Plants ... 10 gal standard bougainvillea, veriegated pink eureka, and a duranta standard. They just seem in need of help, I may not be able to help myself. Thank you for your help.

(Zone 7a)

What zone is Bakersfield in? I should know but I can't remember.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think you mentioned zone 8 in your other thread? And I'm assuming when you talk about transplanting that you mean planting them in the garden? If you just mean repotting them but you're keeping them somewhere warm for the winter then that's totally fine, no reason why you shouldn't. The rest of my comments are assuming you meant you want to plant them outdoors in the garden now.

Bougainvillea is really only hardy to zone 9, I've lost them in some of my winters so definitely I would not plant those now, I'd plant them in the spring and enjoy them for the summer, then you either dig them up and bring them in or take a chance that they won't make it. The Duranta should be hardy in your zone, but you're kind of on the cold end of their hardiness range so I'd probably wait until spring to plant it. Fall is generally a good time of year to plant things, but this is getting a little late in the year, so I would only plant things now if they're hardy at least to one or two zones colder than you. For the lemon (I'm assuming pink eureka is Eureka lemon?) I'm not familiar with exactly how hardy it is, but as with the Duranta you're going to be towards the cold end of its range too so again I'd wait until spring to plant it.

Thank you! I am in zone 8. It does get a bit cold here. All of the plants are going to go in pots. I have a large, but packed greenhouse I can squeez them in. The lemon tree is already there, not taking any chances. Again thank you, now I can scratch that itch.
