Daily Pics Vol. 38

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

While I was watching the owl, neighbor Stanley came by to check the water level of the creek after a night of rain. (he was most instumental in getting the creek rehab program going for the salmon) Owl flew down to the creek and under a log. We thought owl had a mouse or something, but when we finally got an angle where we could see through the weeds we saw owl was bathing.

Owl flew back into the tree, and an RbN landed just a few feet above owl. We thought RbN would become lunch. Owl used it's tail to attract the RbN, sticking it out and moving it back and forth as a pendulem. Made me think of an angler fish. RbN moved ever closer, coming to w/i about 2 feet of owl, but remained above it. I would guess owl needed to dive for prey, as it never did go for RbN. RbN finally flew to the plum tree where I have the suet feeders. Whew!

Owl had already consumed a bird in that little maple where he sat, as evidenced by the feathers I saw clinging to some of the branches when I was viewing my photos. Critters are so amazing to watch.

Yep, Lesser Goldfinch it is

Okay bird experts, this one has me stumped. Any idea what this bird is?

Female House Finch, somewhat melanistic (with an excess of dark pigment; more-or-less the opposite of leucistic)

Deb, I felt all those same stomach crunches when reading the thread again for starting this forum! Gosh that was tough going.

Yikes is right Sybil, it got even hotter after that on another thread, but I really don't want to go there again either. Dave started this forum very soon after the heat was taken out of the wasp's sting!

I am still getting smiles from all your pics, it is like an invisible and harmonious thread through the universe joining us all together. Keep it up!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Great finch, and downey pics sybil:-) RbNh's are supposed to be heading through here now according to my pal at WBCenter. Keeping my eyes peeled.

What a deal tiger.. seeing the owl. You know you're a dyed in the wool Bird Watcher when you can sense something a little different. Like suddenly all the little birds are hiding... hum, must be a hawk or an OWL!

Kinda along those lines, DeJuncos are back here. A good sign to expect same or more visitors from last year. Right on time.

Weird thing yesterday~ It started out at around 70* and when I went out I saw several Robins! They must have been wondering if spring was here. Any thoughts of that were squelched when it plunged down to 40 last night. The south wind couldn't hold it off any longer. The weather sure in interesting here in North TX, and the wildlife is becoming more and more predictable by it.
I will be watching today to see what the cool brings in.

wallaby~~ I certainly agree about the invisible and harmonious 'thread' in the spirit of this thread and the whole BW forum !! Cute pun wallaby..:-)

It's been an amazing year!

This wee carolina wren came up to my window this morning and sat on th sill, saying "Lady! Come on out here and fill this thing with mealworms!!" Magnes said it was being a little too pushy for such a little bird...lol!

I just think its too darn cute!!

About to pop with mealies :-O A quick inspection of the seed tray while nobody else is around. Didn't eat anything, just being a curious wren...

Do your provide the worms or do they bring their own?

Brainerd, MN

I don't think I've ever seen a wren in the "real." Cute as can be.

Such great photos from everyone!
Here is a downy (or hairy?) way, way up in a tree at sunset yesterday. My neck is a little stiff this morning from pointing up at her (this is the only decent shot, the rest were trashed).

Indiana_lily,

The birds like the peanuts (RBW, Mockingbird, Carolina Wren, to name a few), but the birds like the pb itself. You'll get more takers/birds with the pb with nuts. For that reason alone, I would feed nutty pb. I only use Jif extra crunchy peanut butter (for the birds and a separate jar for us). I've been smearing it on since Dec. 2000 and have been doing it every day since. LOL, that's alot of jif xtra crunchy pb for 7 years so far! 'Another generation born and raised on pb', each year!

Thanks for the info on the seed block and the suet. I've got 3 different 'flavors' of seed blocks. LOL. Two are by Birdola Woodpecker variety and Trail mix which has fruit and nuts in it. The third one from Duncraft is their Very Berry Block
http://www.duncraft.com/Duncraft-E-Z-Fil-Very-Berry-Bird-Block-P2411C57.aspx

I've been using C&S Peanut Treat suet cakes and C&S Woodpecker Treat suet cakes and now I find a C&S Peanut Butter Treat suet cake that has: Ingredients: rendered beef suet, roasted peanuts, peanut butter, peanut flavoring, corn, and oats

Sounds yummy for the birds!

I was one of the ones who pushed for having this forum and I'm very happy we got it! It's exciting to see the birds outside (I've been feeding birds, at this house, every day since Dec. 2000), hear them sing, see the Spring/Summer birds come and bring their babies, see the Fall/Winter birds arrive and help them get thru the cold and nasty weather, enjoy all the Fall and Spring migrating birds stop by, everything! Birds are such a joy in life everyday!

Marilyn

I look forward to chatting and sharing and laughing with everyone every day! ;-)

Sybil,

Nice pics! What kind of netted bag do you use for the beef suet you get at the grocery store? Where do you get the bags?

Very nice pictures everyone, I can't believe how fast these threads go! I didn't realize this forum was so new, but glad it's here.

Brainerd, MN

I was at the local Cub grocery store - one of those big box grocery stores - and had planned to pick up the ready-made suet logs that have seed worked into them and come in the red nylon mesh bag. They didn't have any. They only had chunks of suet (fat) which is all the birds are after anyway.

I didn't have anything to put it in so the butcher gave me some stretchy, cotton meshed tubing which I cut up, stuffed with the suet and stuck on nails onto wherever I could. I imagine that cotton mesh tubing is what they wrap roasts in...?

I did not expect the cotton to hold up but it seems to be doing fine.

Debnes,

Nice Junco pic!

Adorable Carolina Wren pic with the mealworn hanging from its beak! Too funny on the story! Who is Magnes, your DH?

The more I see your bird feeder setup, the more I love it! Fantastic idea! Love the C. Wren inside it!
