Irish moss garden and bulbs

Olga, WA(Zone 8b)

Anyone know if Irish moss will prevent small bulbs from coming up if the moss is very vigorous and thick?

I think it would be a very striking combination to have, say, bicolor grape hyacinths and miniature white daffodils appear over a carpet of moss. Just don't want to put all the time and effort into it if it's just another one of my hair-brained ideas . . .

would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

I have done it with Irish moss as well as Scotch Moss and it worked fine. Never used the grape hyacinths though...their foliage may or may not be able to penetrate the moss as it isn't real stiff when it comes out of the ground, but definitely yes to the daffodils. I've also done it with Dutch Iris, Tulips, and Scilla.
I would think any bulb whose foliage emerges as a stiff point from the bulb would work. I tried it with freesia and it didn't work.

You should have no problems with the bulbs in beside the Irish moss, what you will need to remember is that moss normally needs a good bit of moisture for it to stay healthy and some bulbs that get planted closer to the surface wont like their bulbs/roots too wet, however, as some folks have had good results, maybe I am just worrying too much, good luck.
