What happened to the search bar?

I think I have something that will work for everybody, but I don't know how to do a screen shot.

The link that Equilibrium posted in this post http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4270197 is the most recent version of what Dave's done in terms of search...last time there was a discussion on here about troubles with search, he did this and at some point if it was working well I think he was going to post an official link to it somewhere. He hasn't done that yet, but it still works, so if you like it then add it to your favorites so you can find it easily.

In Firefox, goto plant files search. I went to the general search. It will work better. Right click in the box where you would type what you were searching for. From the drop down menu, select "Generate Custom Search Button". A small window will pop up allowing you to customize the name and such. After you are done, click ok. You now can go up to the Google search bar and click on the little black down arrow next to the "G" and select to search with in Dave's Garden.

Does this help?

Will that just work in Plant Files, or on the whole DG site? I think CaptMicha wanted to be able to search the whole site. Also, do you have to have something special installed already? Or a certain versin of Firefox? I tried what you said out of curiosity and when I right click, I don't get the Generate custom search button option.

Drsaul, that sounds like it would be what Captmicha was looking for...but when I right click on the text field it doesn't say "generate custom search button" anywhere on the drop down menu. Do you think I have an outdated version of firefox?

That makes sense revlaus and ecrane. I wonder though why he took off the option to download a search, since it is a matter of choice...if you don't like it, don't get it! I do like the general search that you and equilibrium posted and will start using it more often.

I don't know about having something special installed for it to work. It just always has. My ver. is 2.0.0.11 I'll check to see if I installed an add-on for this to work. It works for any search field anywhere on the web.

I'm sure there was a good reason that old search thing isn't available anymore...my guess is that as Firefox changed through the years that search no longer worked as well as it used to, or would have required Dave to do a bunch of reprogramming to get it to work, or something like that. I've never see Dave take away something that people liked and that was working well.

I agree, he doesn't take away things for fun! I emailed him, so I bet we'll get an answer sometime this week.

I have FF version 2.0, so I'm a little outdated. Great to know that feature though drsaul.

Ok...I have the Google toolbar for Firefox. Ver. 3.0.20070525W I installed it as an add-on. Go up to "Tools" and click on Add-ons and it will take you to the page that has all the add-ons for firefox. After you install it, you should be able to do it.

On my Google toolbar I have the option of searching only the current site. So if I want to limit my search to DG, I open up DG, put in my search term and select the "Search only on the current Web site" button. It has worked well for me.

Whoa. I am super confused. But then again I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer!

I have the current Firefox but didn't get the generate a new search engine when I right clicked it.

I think you also have to have an updated version of the Google toolbar...see what drsaul posted 2 posts before yours. Your Google toolbar is probably an older version.

The new google toolbar is amazing. I should have downloaded it before now! You can even set it so that it doesn't take up more than just that top corner, but still has all the cool features. You all rock!! Thanks CaptMicha for starting this thread. :) Julie
