Thanks resin on your ID of the Coopers Hawk.

Cooper it is! :-) resin!
Great finches charles! & I guess there's nothing like a little snowy suet for a hungry junco. It's just been so much warmer here for this time of year. Still no winter birds, just the migratory ones so far. That might change in the next day or so.. Right now we are at 70 degrees (record or near about), and it is expected to come in slow from the Northwest. It creeps and then moves a little. In Decatur it is 50* right now and that is 30 miles NW of here.

All that to say I am expecting some more 'different' visitors, we shall see. I am so easily amused this way, to be all excited on a the possible diversity. haha! I am kinda waiting on some that came last year close to Christmas time too. OC & YR Warbler and RC Kinglet... to name a few.

Too cold here for me this morning. -18 degrees when I got up. The birds were feasting already. I don't know how they do that. Their bodies are so little and even puffed up, you wouldn't think they could generate enough warmth to keep them going.

I hear ya sybil

It is the feathers being fluffed out that makes them insulated from the cold. (like a thermal blanket.) Shivering helps too bc it increases body heat.

Lily,

Thanks for the info. Do you ever have the deer eating the Winterberries?

Hi Guys!

***bebop will be starting the new thread soon.***

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Sorry Marilynandbeth - I forgot about the deer part lol. I never see deer at my house. I'm wondering if its because there are so many dogs in the neighborhood. There are deer living in the wooded area next to a golf course that I am not too far from. If you have deer at your house I bet they would love to munch on winterberries unfortunately. Probably the twigs too!

Wellington, New Zealand(Zone 9b)

These birds are just a joy to see. I love those blue jays.

We don't have very many coloured birds here, most of them are brown or greenish. We have a few "escapees" that have colonised here. A cheeky greenfinch did come to check me out as we were chopping pines a while ago - I guess he will be cousins with your goldfinches Linthicum :-) Looooonnnngggg zoom to capture him so not as sharp as your delightful shots.

Thanks for sharing everyone.

What a nice shot of the Red-bellied!

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Beautiful indiana! I don't think I've ever seen a red bellied with SUCH a red head!

To Marilyn in Hebron, KY, Winterberry holly are deer resistant plants. The deer here (Zone 6b Indiana) never touch them. You need to buy a male pollinator for an acre area of female shrubs. My Ilex verticilla grow in a shaded woodland area that has standing water most of the winter and spring and then dries up in the summer drought. The red berries are a bird magnet. Ann in Bloomington

Indianna,

Thank you so very much for the info! I'll have to see if I have the space to have both male and at least one female. I really appreciate it!

LOL, guess we better get to the new thread of daily pics before Pelle comes after us! ;-) LOL!
