very cute!!
Daily Pics Vol. 37
Pelle, it is a new feeder - home-made. I'll try to explain what I did. If you ever have any old window screens laying around they can be put to good use.
First, I measured the window screen. This was the smaller pull-type window screen so when I took it apart, I had two screens (one for a later time or replacement). I then went to Home Depot and bought 2" width lumber with sufficient length to make a rectangle about 1/8" to 1/4" bigger than the screen. Also buy enough lumber to put a piece underneath of the rectangle where you can fasten a pipe flange. I also purchased a small section of pipe (the size to fit the flange) maybe 4" to 5". I then had an 8' section of 2 1/2" PVC pipe laying around. Insert the PVC pipe into the ground 18" to 24". Then simply insert the pipe and flange into the top of the PVC pipe.
To keep the screen in the rectangle that you make, just put 2 screws into each side a few inches from each end ( need 8 screws). Place the screws as close to the side bottom that you can. Now you're finished. Just drop the screen in.
You can take the screen out to clean, or if necessary, remove the entire feeder from the PVC pipe. Add some bird seed and you're in business.
Hope it makes sense. It works great.
I spent most of the morning outside hoping to photograph a few birds against the recent snowfall. I was able to get a few shots. This one was probably my best opportunity. You can't beat a red Cardinal against the white snow !!! But for whatever reason, I have very few Cardinals around my backyard this year.
LOL!
Beautiful color on the downy.
Those Cardinals - Wow!
Linth...those captions are too funny and the snow pics are beautiful!
Deb..Nice shot of the Mocker...still none here!
behop...Love that pic of the Dee, the whole pic is stunning!
Adel...LOL!
Wow Linth..and I though I was lucky to get 5 or 6 Doves! Nice shot!
HI, birdsters--love your photos...just found this thread...
nanny, I love your comments like " ? " about the little brown birds...I can't tell them apart either...differences are so subtle and the books often don't show the real deal...so I love your pics and can't wait to hear the comments and IDs.
And, am I the only one who can't ID the hawk in the first pic? I am a klutz on hawks too and I better get with it because we had two big ones sitting in the tree together most of the morning and they may well be the only birds we get this winter if they won't move on! Pelle, I feel your pain...
I'm working on getting my new computer updated with a photo program...hope I will have some pics tomorrow. This is a fun thread!
Nanny ~ I may be wrong but I think the brown bird in all 3 pics is a House Sparrow. Second pic is a HS and a White Breasted Nuthatch. Nice pics too, the WBN is usually hard for me the catch, they grab and run!
Tabasco, the hawk in the opener is a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
I am real newbie to birds but thank goodness for all the people here to help me learn and be able to ID some of my little guys! I have no idea what the difference is between a sparrow & a wren! I am just finding it so amazing seeing birds in my own back yard here that I never even knew existed a year ago!
So on that I note, I thank all of you here on the Birdwatching Forum!!
Wow Awesome pics Everyone!
Charlie, I love the Junco, Cardinal Jay etc!
Adel, Your a crackup- nice pic!
Nanny- Good pics; I'll take a look at the bird.
Paul- Thanks for showing us the beautiful New Zealand native!
GP & Dellrose lovely pics!
Nanny, Not a native species, Its a male House Sparrow.
Linthicum, you have a lot more snow in MD the we have in Anchorage. Most of ours melted. Most of my yard is bare. However, where it was packed down on the driveway, it is solid ice.
I think I see 14.
Yeah!! That's what I'm talkin about guys!!
Charles~ Thanks to explaining how to make that cool feeder. Great snow pics, they really pop!
Paul~ The Wood Pigeon is gorgeous!
nanny~ Your second "?" is a White-breasted Nuthatch with a Sparrow
your third "?" looks like a H Sparrow too.
Driving along the creek after taking ben to school this Great Blue Heron flew across the roadway. I got out and followed it and got some "ok" pics. Not great, but we can still make it out.
When I got closer it took flight:
Neat pics debnes!!
Nice pics everyone!!
Sybil - I counted 14 in your pic too. Love the PWP shot, I'm still waiting for one to stop by here, they fly over all the time.
Yoohoo, Resin.............
I have a new life bird, and I'm certain it's a shrike, I cannot determine if it's the Northern or the Loggerhead, either of which might be found at my loction. The images are not good. It's very dark here, and the shots were taken at quite a distance. I'm hopeful your expertise can assist?
Congratulations Tiger!!
Can't wait to hear Resins answer as I want to see if I've guessed correct!
Northern Shrike. Nice one!
Notice how the black eye mask stops at the base of the bill; on Loggerhead, it continues as a narrow band across the top of the bill where yours shows that bit of whitish colour. Also that its bill is quite long.
Resin
Wow! Cool bird. I'd have to go through about ten states to see this Northern cousin of the Loggerhead.
